IL-2 Great Battles | Lockheed P-38 Lightning | Armed Reconnaissance!
We take time out to have another look at IL-2 Great Battles. Following the career in RAF No.3 Sq ending I have received many suggestions. I plan to do several one-off missions in different aircraft and then put which we should start a career with to the vote.
Today we take up the Lockheed P-38 as we head out on an Armed Reconnaissance mission.

The p-38 is one of those aircraft that I feel everyone knows, but we dont see enough of. Either over shadowed by late war titans like the p-47 and p-51, or by the early war under dogs like the p-40 and f4-f. She truly is an underappreciated gem that saw us through in every theater of war.

Some brilliant flying and manoeuvers there, great to see you 'leading the shots'. (That AI German pilot was an 'ace') Speaking of leading, you know what the P-38 Lightning reminds me of ? I'm glad you asked, y yes, it does remind me of the MOSQUITO! My vote is for a campaign in the Gloster Gladiator, honest! (actually, that mightn't be a bad 'call') and I don't know why people seem fixated on the MOSQUITO, it's not like it was an exceptionally fast and agile aircraft with dual role fighter/bomber capabilities and a massive center-lined offensive armament of four 20mm cannons and four .50 cal browning s......oh, err, what? It seems I was wrong, the MOSQUITO was indeed an exceptionally fast and agile aircraft with dual role fighter/bomber capabilities and a massive center-lined offensive armament of four 20mm cannons and four .50 cal 's, who would have thunk it? Soo....er....go Gladiators! Cough cough MOSQUITO! Pax Dude, I love to watch you fly....speaking of flies, that reminds me of 'mossies', hey, wasn't there some obscure WW2 aircraft that had the same nickname? Began with M....wait, it'll come to me soon..............

The metal ovals on the engines act as mirrors to allow the pilot is to see if the main landing gear is properly locked down. The landing gear cannot be seen from the cockpit otherwise.

190’s were very formidable aircraft to go up against at higher altitudes, and 109’s operated very well at low altitudes. Always enjoyed the 38’s because of the mix of 50 cal machine guns and cannons. I would do a all gun burst when I an absolute shot, with the mix let out at once usually did a fair bit of damage.

The mirrors are an amazing touch. Pilots could see if their gear was down and locked before landing. And when in the tricycle geared planes, when off airport landing hold the nose wheel off the ground as long as you can so it does not dig in and or break. I always thought the Lightning was faster than the Germans of the era.

The mirrors are on the nacelles to check if the gear are down and locked. Might be a backup indication on this airplane but not uncommon for planes of this era to have a 2 light arrangement in the cockpit. 1 red 1 green so it was up to you to verify the main gear status.

I definitely vote for a Lightning campaign. It's one of my favorite planes and easily one of the most unique. 2:46 - How can the Lightning be difficult to taxi? 1) You can actually SEE where you're going, without having to zig zag back and forth, like you do in tail draggers. 2) It has nosewheel steering, so it steers like a car. 14:02 - In addition to being able to climb well, at 250mph or under, the Lightnings' "Fowler flaps" allowed them to EASILY turn inside German planes. 15:07 - SHAME on you! "Disorientated???" Did you mean "disoriented?" That's like calling a hotel and asking to "reservate" a room. 😁

If something can be said to have an orientation, then it can be orientated or disorientated. I suspect you might be asserting the 'correctness' of American English over British English. Just bear in mind where the language originated. Yes, that is originated, not origined.

Is the P-51 an in game option? I have to say, I only ever remember the Mustang being flown by the Yanks but just watched a documentary about it being US made but ordered by RAF and then taken on by the Yanks. I dunno if seeing the livery of wartime aircraft means that I’ve seen it a million times but never associated it with the chrome of the USAF or if I’ve genuinely never seen it The double mustang which followed was an interesting craft too, but the P-51, to my mind, is as iconic to the Pacific stage of the war as the Spitfire and Hurricane are to the European stage

Neil Harbott And the US immediately restored Yank engines because... well, America. I’m not saying they were good planes, though the item I watched certainly claimed that, just that they’re as iconic in the Pacific campaign as the Spitfire and even the Messerschmitt were in Europe.

Wash your mouth out! Taff is not yet capable to fly (competently) in that aircraft, have you seen the landings? No no, something much more forgiving. like a Gloster Gladiator should be ok. Who ever heard of a Mosquito anyway? don't know why people seem fixated on the MOSQUITO, it's not like it was an exceptionally fast and agile aircraft with dual role fighter/bomber capabilities and a massive center-lined offensive armament of four 20mm cannons and four .50 cal browning s? A ridiculous idea in my opinion....... Mosquito? Arse I say....... (cough cough Mosquito!) Pax (Mosquito!) dude.
