The cobra was well suited for the air war in Russia. From my reading the Russians put it to very good use

Wheeze" Sounds more like a vacuum cleaner. I wonder if it's the propeller gearing.

Nice landing there Dhilir. I just like to asked if you use the Auto RPM or manual setting on the P39? I personally prefer the manual as I found that auto is kinda sensitive and I've damaged my engine a number of times ( then again i'm still new to the P39). Interestingly the P40 has an Auto RPM setting as well but too is kinda sensitive.

Hi. I'm still trying to learn P-39 as well. Haha. I manually control the RPM(prop pitch?) to maximum 75% during the fight.

I'm not sure about the percentages ( i read off the instrumenrts )but I roughly use 2200RPM to 2300RPM for cruising ( 250mph ) at 30 manifold pressure. I find between 2700RPM to 2600RPM is good for combat. i'm still getting used to the P39 as well. Not a good plane to dogfight but more of a zoom in and zoom out fighter ( got to keep that speed up ) Great videos you've been putting up!!

Hi Dhillr, Yeah, after that one shoot down, you turned around to look and I thought I saw that your plane was leaving behind some vapor trails. What was that? Coolant or fuel. But, yeah, you lasted a few more minutes and your engine stopped. I tried to read your control panel but I didn't know what I looking for. Oh, it looks like you are getting good with that cannon, or are you using your machine guns when those planes cross close and in front. It happens quick and so I guess you just use one cannon round when that happens. Either way, you have a good sense for when to hit the trigger.

I got hit badly at 0:30 by the stuka's rear gunner. :| I use both cannon & machine gun when the enemy planes are close enough.

Oh! Okay. Thanks Dhillr. I went back and played it over 5 or 6 times and yes, I was able to see that amidst all the gun fire, your plane actually shock. I will have to pay attention for that in the future, so I can follow these videos more intelligently. But, yes, up close I don't think I know anybody that has better trigger timing then you do. You must be practicing at least 10 or 11 hours a week (I'm thinking in terms of music practice.... you can tell by listening how much practice a 'kid' is actually doing).

Scott, that was coolant and general engine damage - temps are only a little hot (3:00) when the engine failed so it failed due to damage not just heat. Gotta be careful with every bullet in Russian planes, especially cannon ammo.

Hi Peregrine, Yeah, thanks. Until you mentioned it, it never occurred to me to look for a screen shot of the full control panel and then to search the net for "Control Panel P-39". I found a couple of things. I found old photos of junk control panels, but they did not match up with the screen shot ( 3:06 ) but I did find an old brown copy of the original Operators Manual. Cool, huh? Well, yeah, it looks like both coolant temp and engine temp were on the high side. Of course, I don't know what normal is (yeah, I could read the Op Manual cover to cover but I have learned enough for one day), but yeah, after a big hit like that, and any change in the engine readings, and in real life there would be funny noises. Hmmmm. Heck, I would have let those Stukas go and would have started heading home. It was sort of lucky that he found land the way he did. Oh! Hey Dhillr, you still here? Did you know that you were able to reach land at every point in your flight after you took that hit? Oh! I went back and reviewed the 'tape' and you were within land for the greatest part of the time, and then you seemed to prefer that one outcropping anyway. Good Planning. heck, the Stuka should have seen you were in trouble and got low and flown away from land, supposing that the water would have made you too nervous to follow. Who is it that can't tell a dozen "that's the one that got away" stories.

Yeah, when flying in this game you spend quite a bit of time checking guages and get to learn them :). If you're looking for annotated cockpits of these planes check our Requiem or Sheriff's guides. In multiplayer that kind of hit would have me running for home, the P39 doesn't make many weird noises before the engine quits (unlike some other planes) so it just suddenly shuts off. I prefer the engines that last a little longer and chug away like the La5/Lagg3. I have a video up of an MP mission and you can see that when you're vs players you spend a lot more time looking backwards rather than forwards!
