Another video of a sortie I did playing one of the single player campaigns that comes with the game.
Back in the day of the old IL-2 1946, this aircraft was my favorite Russian fighter to fly. I'm not sure why. Perhaps I just liked the look of it or the fact that it had pretty good armament for its time. It was and still is a difficult aircraft to fly due to its weight and under-powered engine. It is not an aircraft that climbs well or turns well, especially when up against the Bf109s and Focke Wulfs. My own personal preference for tactics is to surprise opponents (offline and online) with a "Boom & Zoom" attacks. Hit them hard and get out quick. This plane does this particular thing well in the dive.
It can also take a beating due to its heavy and hard airframe.
In this particular mission of the campaign, I am ordered to take two wingmen and patrol along a known air corridor the Germans use to move Bomber formations into Stalingrad area of operations. Sometimes the formations have escorts, sometimes they do not. I'm really hoping this time they have no escort.
Now these particular LAGG-3s we are are piloting have experimental armament fixed on them in the form of one 12.7mm machine gun and one 37mm cannon. We are being sent to test these configurations out on any German bombers we run across.

Thanks. Yep, it is my favorite Russian plane in this series although I'm really starting to like the Pe-3 a lot lately.
Good video and yep you warned everyone about the landing, it appears it takes alot of speed to land.
I know I’m very late to “the party” here but was this a quick mission? I’m confused on how to coordinate wingmen. Other flights 🤔

Why is it that you seem to keep the trigger pressed even when your target moves off the crosshair?
New prop , new engine , new airframe , you will be fine ! :-)

The LaGG-3 is nof often played. It ended up on ground patrol missions and in the reserve. A ground patrol on convoys and trains would be great. More of the LaGG.
You`re going to the Gulag for that landing...lol.

Just curious: at 2:15, it is stated that the airframe is completely made of wood. Does that exclude the exterior plating? Because it looks like metal is peeking out from beneath the paint on the front of the aircraft. Just wondering if it's a mistake in the texture or if "airframe" only includes the interior structure :)

The main structure of the aircraft was made of that special wood. Of course engine and certain other parts were metal so that is probably what you are seeing. I can't remember the name of the wood but it was a very heavy wood which of course caused the aircraft to be more heavy than normal. IIRC the engine did not have enough power to really make this heavy aircraft nimble in maneuvers. Could dive due to the weight really well though. At least that is what I remember reading.

That is how I use it. And yes, the FW-190A3 is another good bnz fighter for the axis.
