My middle school teacher in Alaska flew avengers in WW2 and Korea. He hit the musashi. He was a bush pilot and I flew with him occasionally. Fun stuff

Excellent!, amazing the high level of detail. Even more modern sims can't compete with Il21946 in terms of replayable missions and AI.

Way back when , I was in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets ( I made it up to a Flight Sargent ) and my commanding officer flew Mosquitoes for Costal Command . He was involved in attacks on German convoys off Norway . He didn’t recall the fighting but what a memory when it came to the good times.

This is pretty damned realistic in terms of the damage the battleship absorbed-similar to the real events of the sinking of the Yamato.

I just read about Battle of Midway and was really surprised about how big losses in certain attacks could be. From wiki: "Without fighter escort, all 15 TBD Devastators of VT-8 were shot down without being able to inflict any damage. Ensign George H. Gay, Jr. was the only survivor of the 30 aircrew of VT-8. Meanwhile, VT-6, led by LCDR Eugene E. Lindsey lost nine of its 14 Devastators (one ditched later), and 10 of 12 Devastators from Yorktown's VT-3 (who attacked at 10:10) were shot down with no hits"

The Devastators had big losses because they came in low and slow. Being easy targets for the Zeros. The Devastator was quickly replaced with Avengers.

Well the odd thing about the Devastator is that it's quite well known for its failure at Midway, but at Coral sea it accounted for it self quite well. It's failure at midway was as much as the lack of fighter cover as it's over all short comings (which where well known and it's successor the Avenger was also present at midway and also fared badly, 5 out of 6 present shot down -Interestingly they where a detachment of VT-8).

Imagine this AA in War Thunder and every Bomber would be shot in seconds :D

Idk, It seems like the AA in War Thunder has improved over time. Taking out ships in the English Channel map isn't a suicide mission anymore.

That moment when you realize that there's actually four to five times (ish) as many rounds in the air as those tracers...

What a magnificent ship the Yamato was! 9x19 Inch Guns! The Japanese made some amazing stuff in WW2, Aircraft and ships in particular, their tanks weren't that good but probably were great in the tropics. And now Japan is one of our best Allies, and it is building new warships!

Haven't played Il2 for ~10 years, bought it few weeks back on Steam, can't wait to start playing! :) P.S. Great video as always 👍🏻

Pearl Harbour showed that you can successfully drop a torpedo in shallow water. Note that box-like thingy at the end of the torpedo?

ADvorak Those were 1941 Japanese torpedoes modified to work in the shallow Pearl Harbor. These are 1945 American Mk13s, and that is deep water.

Andrew Mylander … which only means that technology advanced - but the outer wooden box stabilising the torpedo in the air is a descendant of the Japanese Pearl Harbour technology. The Type 91, released at 180 knots at 20m height could do the Pearl Harbour thing. The same torpedo could be dropped at 204 knots (maximum speed of the “Kate”, the Japanese carrier torpedo bomber) into choppy, heavy seas. And the same torpedo had been test dropped from 500m and 1000m release height. Not saying the US torpedoes were bad, but the Japanese were there first.

Avenger pilots quite liked that. They liked seeing it fall like a bomb, probably because no more low and slow

Interesting--the torp bombers launched and then broke away at an angle rather than simply flying over the ship being attacked. Is this a new feature of the AI or did the maker of the mission 'plot' the flight plans that way?

It’s a large spray but in all honesty it’s fairly ineffective as compared to other alternatives to shooting down attacking aircraft

I think its because its just a game, in real life 1 or 2 bullets of that spray hit you and you are dead, dead engine o leaking some liquid and you are down.... Just my opinion. You cant survive that massive spray focused on you.

@@Big1_ well you could have friendly fighter aircraft to intercept the attacking force before they reach your fleet or while they are trying to attack youll have other ships in the task force as cover. In most cases the two are paired together. And one or two shots will not take down an American plane in more cases than not. Theyre extremely tough and a hard nut to crack unless you have a gun of a higher caliber but even then theyre still heavily protected targets as compared to the japanese aircraft. Also, there are ways of getting through AA fire like flying at wave top level to where the guns on the ship wont train low enough to hit you or making it harder for the gunners to hit your plane or flying out of the sun so the gunners are essentially firing blind. Many planes were destroyed by AAA theres no doubting that, but with luck there are ways of getting through

Also as a side note aircraft are a great counter to ships for a reason. Ships are huge, relatively slow targets (ex: Bismark, Yamato, and Musashi). All three of the ones i mentioned were destroyed by attacking allied aircraft

At this point American planes were bulletproof for Japanese AA. 25mm was not sufficient to damage the plane by one shot. You need 30mm gun or 35mm but Japanese strangely didn't invent them.

Well, if you are enough brave, you can try make a “low approach” fly over the Battle ship use bomb or rocket to clean the AA guns. This will help next bomber groups a lot, but your plane will suffer badly damage.

Here, it's not the Musashi but the Yamato, the Musashi didn't has as much of AA on the side ^^

This game is beautiful, FM`s according to each aircraft, IL-2 Great battles, took advantage of the name to create that horrible game with crazy FM`s, using the ROF engine, it will never be a 1946!

Hey Fishyyy you guys should do some Korean war footage. Not sure if you did I did not watch all your videos but I think it would be cool to do a CAS with some late 40s early 50s jets and prop plane on korean/Chinese targets

Imagine if the Japanese had made a bigger caliber fast firing AA like a 37mm(3.7 cm Flak german) or a 40mm(bofors, us and uk used).......instead they kept with the 25mm and just put them in every single free space on top of a ship. Even the Italians had a fast firing 37mm.

@@geometrycash0962 did a lot of research about this and the Japanese did test the 20mm flak and the 37mm flak right before WW2 and there are pictures. Japan also captured almost 100 bofors 40mm from the British and the Dutch at the start of the Pacific War. The Japanese just did not have the industrial capacity to copy these designs once the war started and trade with Europe stopped. At the end of the war in 1945 the Japanese did sucessfully copy the Bofors 40mm and called it the Type 5. There is no recorded use of the Type 5 in combat but USA occupational authorities did test the Type 5 and compared it to the American, British and German bofors 40mm. They found that the Japanese Type 5 had a longer barrel but it had a shorter range than all other bofors 40mm

If you look closely some AA stations are knocked out, as well as the big turret at the rear. You can tell because the destroyed AA stations emit flames...some times when I play I use a fighter to take out all the AA stations on a destroyer (much smaller ship) and then try to get the big guns to direct hit me.

Do you maybe know why the smaller 13mm guns are broken and just elevate but still fire in a 0 degree angle?

Admiral Mitchner sent, in waves, nearly 400 USN warplanes to attack the Yamato led Ten-Go squadron. Only 10 US planes did not return. Several were knocked out of the by the Yamato exploding...

When Yamato was being attacked it used it's main guns to set off water plumes to distract torpedo bombers from their run.

Was für eine Schlacht! Spektakuläres Video! Hat echt Spaß gemacht, es anzuschauen. Die Avenger-Piloten waren top, die Helldiver-Piloten sollten sich Originalaufnahmen von Sturzkampfbomber-Angriffen anschauen, um zu schauen, was sie besser machen können. Falls möglich, werft mal einen Blick in die Original-Handbücher für Sturzkampfbomber. Hier drei Punkte: 1.) Das Schiff sollte in der Breitseite angegriffen werden, nicht von Bug oder Heck. 2.) Die Bomben einen kurzen Moment nach dem Abknicken abwerfen (s. Originalaufnahmen), nicht im Sturzflug selbst. Gedanke: Das Visier ist auf den Piloten eingestellt, nicht auf die weiter unten hängenden Bomben. ;) 3.) Die Bomben später abwerfen, um die Treffergenauigkeit zu erhöhen (s. Originalaufnahmen). Dabei bedenken, daß ein Schlachtschiff wegen seiner Größe einem näher vorkommt als es tatsächlich ist. ;)

@@Fishyyy Grandios zu fliegen. Ich kenne sie noch von "Aces of the Pacific", falls Dir das noch was sagt. Laaaange her. :) Mir ist aber schon oft aufgefallen, daß die Leute sich nicht so richtig mit Sturzkampfbombern auskennen. Die Grundprinzipien sind ja dieselben.
