I honestly love these "programmed start" IKEA CFL's. I wish they still made them though. Although I'm sure I can find a handful of them on eBay.

Fortunately megaman still makes regular CFLS and they still are pretty good quality.

Had a couple of those, but passed 'em on to a friend, who had a matching Ikea lamp. As for your broken one, why not find a plastic cover (of appropriate diameter) and glue it on?

It actually was purple. When they first start up, the first gas that glows is the argon or neon which makes a purple or pink glow. I have one in my desk lamp and when it first turns on, it glows purple for a second
