IKamper Skycamp Mini Review - Why I Chose a RTT

After a lot of research I decided that my new tent for overlanding would be a roof top tent, from there I found that the hard shells offered a lot of benefits but were typically very limited in size (wedge design) and most RTT's were longer than my 5-1/2' truck bed which look awkward and made it impossible to fit in my garage. Then I discovered the IKamper Skycamp Mini!! Great quality, a little pricey, but very pleased so far. In this video I cover the major pros and cons and why I chose this tent. This is an early review since I have only owned the tent for 4 months and have had it out 3 times. I plan to do a follow up after a few summer adventures! I also plan to provide a video reviewing the IKamper Annex soon.

    Great video, thank you! I have a 2020 Ford Raptor with Leer topper shell over the bed. I currently use a Tepui Hybox RTT, but I hate having the overhang on the back. I have a Thule roof rack over my cab for my mountain bikes. I've been eyeing the Skycamp Mini for a year because of the smaller footprint and the 60 second setup/teardown... but this video just sold me! FYI i bought a $70 chain hoist at TSC and it works great for removing and installing my larger and much heavier Tepui RTT. Thanks for the tip on the inflatable sleeping pad as well... the biggest reason I was dragging my feet on switching over to iKamper is because I like the 3" memory foam mattress on my Tepui so much.

    Hi Nick. Thanks for watching the video. I'm glad I could give you the info you needed to make the decision. I really need to move my hoist system up on the priority list. I think I have been over thinking it and your comment about just going with a $70 chain hoist has made me realize I am definitely trying to over engineer this solution. Good luck with the Ikamper and feel free to reach out anytime.

    I’m looking into a similar setup for my Raptor. Any additional wind noise and was the on road handling negatively affected by the weight placed higher up?

  • @WeekendOverland

    @WeekendOverland

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Garrett. At the current height, the top of the Ikamper is slightly below the cab height so aerodynamics are good with no wind noise or handling changes. I am planning (just ordered parts from Front Runner) to raise the load bars another 4" giving me about 10" clearance above the DiamondBack cover. The IKamper Mini has a front taper to it, so the front of the shell will be no higher than the cab, so should still have good aerodynamics. This will give me more storage between cover and tent bottom (for trips) and more visibility through back window while tent is mounted. I will put together a quick video when the parts come in.

    Fantastic video two quick questions for you please did you consider a roof nest condor rooftop tent? People generally rank this above Ikamper. Second most importantly does ikamper latch onto a roof rack like a front runner or an ARB base rack? I have a Land Cruiser and I’m considering a new roof rack. Thank you!

    Hi Eric. Thanks for watching. I purchased my IKamper about a year ago and looked at all other tents I could find. I do not remember the direct comparison but reviewing now, it appears the two are very similar with the exception of a thicker mattress with the Condor which also creates a taller shell. I like the lower profile of the Ikamper Mini but wish they would have given it a little more room to store bedding. As far as mounting, I have my Ikamper mounted to Front Runner load bars. Love the set up.

    Is there enough space inside the tent to fold it down and close it up with all of your bedding left inside? Or do you need to remove blankets, pillows, sleeping bags etc. In order to close it up properly?

  • @WeekendOverland

    @WeekendOverland

    3 жыл бұрын

    That is one of the downsides to this tent. I wish they would have made the shell about 1-2" taller to give extra capacity for bedding. At this point I am able to keep the Klymit air mattress (deflated) in the tent and still close it. I since added a Thule condensation mat and had to remove the air mattress in order to close the shell. It is a tight fit.

    Excellent video dude. Love your set up and ride. I have a Tacoma, lifted, and so want to get one of these but I just, personally, justify the price for what it actually is. I'm almost thinking about getting one of those pickup type tents that go on the back, but I only have a five feet bed. Also, I don't have that beautiful Diamondback cover as mine is just the tri fold stock Toyota one, which is fine, but I'd have to get into brackets and finding just the right strength rack system and all. Thanks for this though; love your set up!

    Hi D. I actually started with the same trifold cover and a bed tent. It actually worked great. When using the tent, I would leave the trifold on the truck and folded up to the cab and it served as a nice shelf inside the tent. Thanks again for watching.

    Hello. Very nice set up. I am considering using front runner load bars to support my Autohome Columbus Variant (medium) tent over the bed of my F150 with a 6.5 foot bed, kind of similar to your setup. My truck is equipped with a Retrax XR tonneau which has the T-slots integrated into the rails. I checked out the Front Runner website and they have a kit specifically made for my truck model AND tonneau cover model but it is a FULL rack and with the needed accessories would cost me $2K. Ouch. So I called Front Runner and asked them if I can simply order 3 load bars with the legs to mount the tent? That would cost about $600 which sounds much better than $2K. I don't need a full rack. But, they said they don't recommend it because 3 load bars may not support the weight of a 143 pound tent with 2 occupants. Each load bar is rated at 150 lbs. The full rack is rated at 650 lbs. I asked about using 4 load bars instead and the guy at Front Runner agreed that would probably be sufficient but warranty may not cover any failures. So here is my question. How are your 3 load bars been holding up the tent? Any issues? Thanks.

  • @WeekendOverland

    Hi Michael. I have had no problems so far with my set up (installed for about a year now). The entire set up remained on my truck for about 10 months before removing the tent so I could transport some items on top of the bed cover when we were relocating in November. My Ikamper Mini base weight is 125lbs and they only recommended 2 load bars at the time. I decided to go with 3 for more support and giving me options for mounting the MaxTrax to the side. With me and my wife and few other items, I typically have an additional 350 lbs in the tent for a total of 475lbs on the load bars. In terms of the distribution of weight over the load bars I would guess you could get by with 3 but utilizing 4 would give you extra piece of mind. Mine is mounted to a Diamond Back HD cover which is rated at 1500lbs, so I am not sure if the mounting required with your bed cover makes any difference. Hope that helps.

    Correct with the camper on the load bars you cannot open the cover but you only need to remove the RTT (and not the load bars) to open the cover. Mine weighs about 120 lbs but is still a 2 person job. I plan to build a hoist in my garage to make it a 1 man job.

    Hi John. No not in the "Mini" version that I have, plus it would be difficult to get larger dogs up into the tent. I will be publishing soon, a video on the IKamper Annex that connects to the tent which I use to contain the dogs and provide additional space for us as well. The tent will comfortably hold two adults but not a lot of room to store gear. I just released a video showing some mods I have made to add a little storage capacity to the tent.
