Ikamper Skycamp 2.0 install on Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform

Before purchasing this combo, I scoured the internet trying to figure out if the tent and rack were compatible. Finding very little, I decided to make a video documenting MY process of installation. Overall, a bit a pain in the butt - however I think it will be thoroughly enjoyed once the weather improves here in WA!

This is why I went with Rhino-Rack Backbone + Vortex crossbars for my iKamper Skycamp Mini. Some folks on the iKamper site claim the iKamper 2.0 brackets are compatible with the crossbars on the Pioneer rack. But I can't see how that could be possible. The iKamper 1.0 clamps work, but then you've got to drill, and then at the end of the day the Pioneer rack is a waste of money, compared to crossbars. I'm glad you got it to work, I hope you and your family have lots of wonderful camping trips.

The 2.0 mounts are just not deep enough to get around the crossbars on the Pioneer system. However, there just wasn't enough info out there when I made my purchase or else I might have gone another direction. Hope you are enjoying your setup!

to the honest, if i spend 3700 on this i kamper, i don't mind to spend extra 800 to get the James baroud evo. at least you don't need to drill holes on this awesome rack. just personal opinion.

Thanks for posting your installation of the iKamper to Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform. I would of liked to see the complete installation, but you stopped after you drilled the holes. Were there any other issues with installing the RTT? I hated seeing you drilling into the Rack. I have the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform and seriously considering purchasing the iKamper 2.0, but now I have concerns. Any recommendations?

Thanks for watching. After drilling the holes we placed 2x4s parallel to the crossbars and set the tent on it. This have us space to slide the brackets in the tent rails and get the bolts lined up with the holes. That part was very helpful. I wouldn't worry about drilling holes in the rack itself, those planks can be replaced individually, you do have to remove the rack to do so, but does t ruin the rack per se. Overall, very happy with the combo although I think the tent could be installed easier on a less robust rack. Good luck!

Thanks for posting this video. I have the pioneer platform, but larger with additional planks. I’m wondering if I could get away without drilling if my gaps line up just right. Could you tell me how far apart the tent’s rails are? Thank you!

I can’t ell you with 100% certainty, but if your rack is longer and wider with the additional planks, then the tent rails should be able to directly mount to the cross bars. The dimensions for the tent are on ikamper’s website under the skycamp product. They taper so there will be a front and rear dimension.

    Experience any wind noise?

  • @jneil78

Significant wind noise. However, I did forget to insert the rail plugs, but I thought that the fix would be ordering the ikamper wind deflector. I also inserter the plugs when I installed the deflector and the noise is now hardly noticeable. Again, the plugs may have been the only thing needed, but I like the look of the deflector and don't feel like removing it to test the plugs alone. Also, with tent/rack/deflector combo I only lost about .5-.7 mpg.

@@tinykoneko yes, the tent 2.0 mounts included the rail plugs. I also had severe whistling, but that has since been solved completely with the deflector.
