ignition upgrade replacing the points to accel 2010acc like kit for $25

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Went to replace the points on a 1968 Firebird and discovered the price for new points is quite expensive, we found a cheaper alternative plus should never have to touch it again. This kit is basically identical to accel brand 2010acc but a 1/4 of the price. This video is a walk thru on how to install and test before putting the distributor back into the engine.

Always happy to see tips that can help people that have never had the fun of dealing with "points" style ignitions, you can't beat the electronic ignition. Great content as always.

Points aren’t to bad to set up for the most part, biggest reasons for upgrading was reliability and cost. This kit is less expensive then a set of points. Now hopefully it is more reliable, We shall see

Points are perfectly fine IF they are of good quality that would not float at high RPMs because of weak spring pressures..Enter Acell, Mallory,ect... Earlier solutions were duel point distributors that jointly created more coil saturation with less points strain...Finally magnetos..They were unbeatable

Hi John, Glade you did this one. Keep us up on how this unit holds up over time. I am a old Delco points guy for all my GM cars as I still use a dwell meter and found out the old Delco points with the condenser screw on them have the strongest spring tension on the contact point so you can top out rpm much higher than with Blue strek or Standard brand points. ( I got a part # for them in my glove box but can't get to it now.) I do run HEIs in my SBC Chevy's but still got points in my Bird. Question? did you really drop the Dist on the FENDER !!! of a 400 hood car !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG your killin me here son with the Homer Simson move ! Duuuoooooh . If you heard a noise after that happened, that was my nuts hittin the floor ! Firebird fenders make tearable work benches, they get enough of that on the side of the road.

Hey I am not perfect… all the time. It was a bone head move to drop it, fortunately this car is in the beginning stages of body work so no real damage. I would never use a finished car as a work bench, maybe 😉 Points are great especially the delco ones but the prices!! Wow they must be gold plated now. I will keep you posted on the durability worse case plan if they fail is return to the delco point set.

Pontiac had factory Electronic ignition long before HEI starting in 1963 with transistorized ignition. They were the first division before Chevrolet started using it in 64 in the Corvette

The module in that unit is the old Mallory unilite trigger design. It is VERY voltage sensitive!!!!!!! 7.2 to 9 volts is what the Mallory unit liked. Once you get the pumpkin together, check the voltage for spikes outside that range when the lights, heater or radio are on/off. It will never kill a module at home……. Always at the cruise in or car show. It does also like a coil that is specifically for an “ electronic “ trigger. It will overheat and boil a points coil.

good POINT 😜, I might just buy an extra module and keep it in the glove box just in case. still cheaper than a set of points.

I put an HFI distributor on my firebird but haven't tried it yet. I wish I had known about that kit you used before I bought it. It would have been much cheaper. The HFI is much bigger than the original distributor but still has enough clearance to the firewall.

@@hydroy1 yes, I remember it was tight but it has enough clearance that I thought it would be fine even with any engine movement while running etc. I guess I will find out when I get it running.

I have an hei on my 1969 coupe it works great. I used the pointed distributor on this car because it has all brand new ignition parts and it was the cheapest way to go. Trying to conserve money, my money tree is not doing well it seems 🤣

@@VinylVillageGarage You need a money tree when you work on these cars. Way too many little parts that all add up to way too much money. I live in Canada so I have the exchange rate, brokerage fees, and taxes to deal with so it's even worse. It kind of sucks the fun out of it when you order parts and get bent over.

Unlike a points distrbutor, HEI mechanical advance was only 15-24 degrees and . for emissions, more advance was made up with the vacuum advance..If you use HEI, you have to re curve it for maximum 36 degrees with base and centrifugal advance..Limit the vacuum advance to 10 degrees with cast iron heads

hope that thing works. I bought a new small HEI distributer and cap with coil from a company on ebay, came with plug wires. Could not get fire with it. Dunno what i did wrong but I think wasn't wired correctly. Went back to the reg HEI distributer with big cap and have clearance issues with firewall but it runs. I think I am getting some engine vibration from the distributer cap making contact with the fire wall.
