Ignazio Giunti Fatal Crash: the WRECKS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

**DESCRIPTION**
In the season's opening sportscar race, the 1000 Km of Buenos Aires, Ignazio Giunti unsighted by another car, ploughed into the back of the Matra of Jean-Pierre Beltoise which had run out of fuel and was being pushed along the track by its driver. The Ferrari came to rest on fire some 150 meters down the track, with the right side of the car heavily damaged.
Arturo Merzario, who was in the pits ready to replace Giunti, rushed to the place of accident wearing his helmet, and vainly tried to pull Giunti from the wreckage. Two hours later, Giunti passed away in hospital with 70% burns on his body.

The drivers had received pre-race instructions that stated drivers were not allowed to push their cars if they ran out of fuel. Beltoise's arrogance cost Giunti his life.

I couldnt find anything about the Drivers not being allowed to push their Cars but I did find something about that Beltoise would have not been allowed to start again if he got to the Pits (From Ignazio Giunti's Italian Wikipedia Page) Jean-Pierre Beltoise, on Matra, ran out of fuel near the last bend before the main straight; he therefore decided to regain the pit lane by pushing his Matra 660 by hand, probably unaware of the fact that - according to the regulations - even if he had reached the pits he would not have been allowed to start again. However, it was usual in those days that the cars were brought back to the pits at any cost, and this was a widespread practice for all the teams, unless the race marshals intervened, which however did not happen in this case.

don't forget that Beltoise had been pushing his car for a couple laps by the time Giunti came round again - unsighted this time by a car in front of him. There were waved yellows before hand and he knew there was a stopped/slow car crawling back to the pits. As much as Beltoise deserve criticism for his logic, Giunti should have also been expected to observe race procedures and use additional caution in avoiding an obstacle he already knew about from previous laps.

(From Italian Wikipedia) The tragedy occurred at the beginning of 1971 on the Buenos Aires circuit during the 1000 km, opening race of the championship. Jean-Pierre Beltoise, on a Matra, ran out of fuel near the last bend before the main straight; he therefore decided to regain the pit lane by pushing his Matra 660 by hand, probably unaware of the fact that - according to the regulations - even if he had reached the pits he would not have been allowed to start again. However, it was usual in those days that the cars were brought back to the pits at any cost, and this was a widespread practice for all the teams, unless the race marshals intervened, which however did not happen in this case. Almost near the last bend on the left, Beltoise decided to correct the trajectory of the car that was drifting too far towards the center of the track, moving alongside it to be able to turn the steering wheel. Just then Giunti and Parkes arrived. Giunti, largely in the lead with the Ferrari 312 PB, was behind the dubbed Mike Parkes in a Ferrari 512S when, having tackled the last bend before the finish line, the couple found themselves in full trajectory the Matra that Beltoise was pushing by hand. Parkes was able to avoid the impact by slipping into the small space between the Matra and the internal curb, but for Giunti who was coming out of his wake there was no escape, hitting the back of the Matra and carambulating along the straight pit lane for 150 meters. The violence of the crash and the consequent fire left the pilot no way out, despite his crew mate Arturo Merzario - in the pits waiting to relieve him - had thrown himself on the burning wreckage to try to get him out of the stake: he died in hospital two hours later due to severe burns.

Unfortunately Beltoise move was not unusual. Even years later in F1 drivers such as Prost and Mansell did the same. I think the race direction was also responsible. No marshalls neither flags warning the incoming cars. And Beltoise himself was quite lucky getting away unscathed.

@@jamesbehra2690 The really bad one was when JP Beltoise was pushing his Matra and Ignazio Guinti hit the car at full speed. Obviously he didn't make it, and Beltiose go away without a scratch.

@@jamesbehra2690 That is F1, where, in general, there are fewer cars on the track than in endurance racing due to endurance racing having so many categories (e.g. LMP1, GTE, etc.) all on track at the same time, and F1 cars (with no classes and all the same specificatons) only ran out of fuel very near the end of races due to large sections of time where refuelling was not allowed in F1 (including currently) - Beltoise had completed only 36 laps and Giunti, leading the race, was actually lapping him when the accident occured. The winning 917K of Jo Siffert and Derek Bell covered 165 laps, so the crash happened at less than 1/4 distance.

@@Durbanite2010 My friend im aware of that. My point was the driver first thought when he run out of gas wich is to try to push the car regardless the danger our even being pointless. Cheers!

It wasn't entirely his fault. Drivers just did that back then. Beltoise was likely unaware that had he recovered to the pits, he would not be allowed to restart again.
