Igbo Language 30 - Tones and Tone Marking

Igbo is a tonal language. One word could have more than one meaning with various intonations. Tone marks are usually used where there are likelihood for ambiguity or misunderstanding. So it is important to use the correct tones.

Thank you very much for your excellent work.. The concept of tones is not hard to understand and the examples make it clear when words are isolated. Unfortunately, it is extremely hard when words appear together in sentences. This is probably the hardest part of igbo. I also find it very hard to distinguish questions because the entonation is very different from the languages I have come across. The entonation of questions in igbo is very similar to that of statements to my ears.

It's same when singing. Examples I will object I have an object (when you sing, the tone for 'object' does not change, noun vs. verb)

Words in their natural tones (udachi), that's dictionary tones, do not start with midtone. If you are learning to speak Igbo, you don't really need to bother about it, just use whichever tone, right or wrong. Your tone will auto-correct as you grow in your learning. Also say the word to an Igbo-speaking person (friend/family), and they would correct you if it doesn't sound right. However, if you are a secondary school student and need to know more for your JSCE/SSCE, please reply to this message and I will provide more details.
