If Your TW200 Is Not Running Well or Won't Start Watch This Video Before Messing with Carburetor

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

on your TW200 Before assuming you have a problem with the carburetor your going to want to check this out first and it's such an easy fix. There is a boot between the carb and the cylinder head that can crack and cause a vacuum leak. I show you a couple ways to test to see if you for sure have a vacuum leak or not. I also show how the engine reacts when there is a vacuum leak. This is for sure something you want to check first when your TW200 is not running correctly. I hope this video was helpful and thanks for watching

    Fun fact: that tube is additional intake volume to balance the cylinder volume to time when the wave front passes the carb venturi during low rpm low throttle conditions (such as idle). Most people that remove the hose and plug the port discover the bike runs worse!

    My personal belief is, if you are going to go somewhere remote with a motorcycle, someplace far from help where a tow truck can't get to you, then you want an air-cooled and carbureted motorcycle like the TW200 or one of the other air-cooled dualsports out there, because the number of things that can fail on you in the middle of nowhere are not that many. There is no electric fuel pump to quit on you, there is no radiator for a stick or a rock to go through, there are no injectors to malfunction, no thermostat to stick shut and overhead your bike and possibly warp the motor, no radiator hoses to cut on something. If you take an extra ignition module, an extra spark plug wire, extra regulator/rectifier (all three of which weigh very little and are very small) and maybe a carb rebuild kit with you, then you basically have everything with you that can cause your motorcycle not to run, I mean these bikes will even run if the battery is dead. It's not a matter of size, it's a matter of RELIABILITY and EASE OF REPAIR if something goes wrong. That's why these bikes are the Swiss Army Knives of motorcycling and adventure.

    Hey tdubskid, I live in Parker CO and whip the TW often. A word of warning, this issue regarding the carb boot can cause the engine to run way too lean and will fry the piston. I posted this issue on the TW forum a while back when this issue came up for me. It happened again a month ago and I had to pull the engine apart again. The boot isn’t ripped, but the expansion hose had cracked. Honestly for an air cooled motor, this boot should be a metal part. The intake definitely gets hot and the heat cycles will age the rubber boot prematurely. Thanks! Good content as usual and I hope to see you on the trails this season when my baby is up and running!

  • @TDubsKid

    @TDubsKid

    for sure, running lean too long can cause problems, that really sucks and yeah they should have used something better maybe someone should make a metal replacement part. best of luck, thank you

  • @kaptein1247

    @kaptein1247

    9 ай бұрын

    It for sure shouldnt be metal because it would transfer a lot of heat would transfer to the carb, which would cause it to run poorly. For bikes with metal intakes you often have thick plastic gaskets. Which is a huge failpoint, in my experience. It leaks air very easily and have had them break on me as well.

    I had the hose disconnect from the manifold in the middle of nowhere. It would run under throttle, but die as soon as the throttle was relaxed. I had no idea that was the problem at first, and was thinking I'd be stuck out there. I thought the carb had decided to fail. Luckily found the issue after really looking the carb area over. I've been thinking about a sprinter van maybe. I'd love to have a place to sleep on one side and keep the bike on the other maybe. Great video man, as a long time bike tech, vac leaks are some of the most overlooked issues I've seen. Un-metered air on any engine definitely causes crazy issues. I may think about that smoke machine for the shop. I've needed one for a long time. What does it use to pressurize the smoke?

    that would be cool! I hear they are slow as dirt, i'm surprised you wouldn't go with a ford transit or econoline haha. thank you! for sure, crazy how something so simple can get overlooked. for sure it's not a bad little unit so far, easy to take places too uses a little air compressor

    I replaced the carb to head manifold on my XT225. I noticed the little nubs in the groove for the O ring. I thought they were a manufacturing defect as the O ring did not want to sit in the groove well. I carved them out with my pocket knife. I also replaced the carb. I see the nubs in your new manifold, (10:43), so maybe doing this was a mistake, but the O ring seems to seal well and the bike runs fine.

    Another good way to check for vacuum leaks is with a can of Gumout carb cleaner, sprayed around the carb boot. I've also used it on car motors as well. If the revs increase, you have a leak spot. Just make sure your motors cool when you start the test!

I have a brand new 2024 tw and it does that high rev run when I first start it using the choke and seems to take a too long to warm up like 5 min or more but it the high rev that concerns me the most almost sounds like the throttle is stuck at about 20% tgrottle... You can crash the throttle a bit and it should smooth out enough to test the for leaks with the spray. as the rpms increase and the air flow goes up the lean condition will lesson alowing the engine to run enough for your test. at even half throttle the airflow through the carb will be high enough to make a small vaccume leak insignificant

    Hello Tdubs, I purchased a new TW200 a few months ago and I have a question about riding in Hot weather. I take it you live in Colorado where it does get exceptionally hot but here in Henderson, Las Vegas area it does. In the summer the temps can go to 115 degrees and lots of days over 100 degrees. Does it hurt to ride my TW200 when it’s this hot? I am from northwest Oregon and I never had to worry about the heat with these Air Cooled Motorcycles but here it’s a different story. What do you think about this? Thanks for helping everyone with the TW200s. James

  • @TDubsKid

    @TDubsKid

    11 ай бұрын

    hey for sure, wow it usually doesn't get that hot here, the TW200 could overheat easier in those temps, if you keep it moving it should be ok, hard slow up hill trails can really make it overheat when it's 80 out, you can tell when it starts to over heat, you start to loose power, done it manytimes, have to give it a cool down break or get it moving quicker to get air over the fins. I would be riding at night in the summer if I lived there haha

    I just bought a 2016 TW200 with only 900 miles on it. Runs fine but sometimes engine quits at idle. Do you think that could be a vacuum leak? And, I know TWs don't go fast but I seem to top out on RPMs at about 30 mph in 3rd gear and top out at 35 mph in 4th gear....is that normal? Haven't takent it on highway to see how hard to get it to 50 mph) Thanks for any input that you can give me, TDubsKid! :-)
