If your pool is clear, you have a sand filter, and you think you have mustard algae... think again.

My pool is clear, we have a sand filter, I vacuum to waste regularly, and I wake up every day to find brownish stuff at the bottom. It could be mustard algae, but it could be something else...

I also have this in my above ground pool. It only appears after I turn my pump on then I vacuum it and wont see it at all until I turn my pump on again! So I vacuum it up, leave my pump off for a day or two, and no dust/dirt (whatever it is) ......then as soon as I turn my pump on it returns! and after vacuuming it up, I leave my pump on for hours and it wont return until I turn the pump on again.

No problem. It can also be contaminants from your water source if it occurs after you vacuum to waste. You can filter the water just before filling your pool to see if that solves your problem. Good luck!!!

I have a 2 year old sand filter that I filled with glass instead of sand as it is fairly new and most pool stores are shocked when I tell them I have glass. I opened my pool and spent nearly $400 to remove metals in my pool which I have never had metal in my water. I have a salt water pool with a brand new cell this year and my salt is within range, but I still have this dark spots on the bottom near the edges and creases. I used shock treatment and most of the spots turned white. It is a powder and returns within 8 hours after vacuuming. I set it to waste and still no different other than I have to buy more chemicals due to the loss of water from waste. I have 28,000 gallons and can't seem to get rid of the powder spots. Does it sound like algae? My water has been cloudy for most of the time. Alkalinity and pH have been off but is now in range but I have no free chlorine. Salt water pools should not need to be shocked weekly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try filtering your water before filling it... maybe an RV filter.

Same. My next filter will be a cartridge filter.

How is this theory working today, this year. We have the same issue. I keep telling hubby it cant be algae with all of that shick and algaecide he uses and it comes right back but pool is clear most of the time.

How did you collect the sediment to put in the water bottle?

I have had this very same problem for TWO years and they keep telling me it's mustard algae. Yet, like you, my water is crystal, I've triple and quadruple shocked it. I even poured liquid shock right into the sand filter, and it came back in only hours. I had drained my pool to add a skimmer and for days I had NO problem, until I turned on my filter after I raised the water, and again, there it was. So, it's not algae it's sand sediment like you have. I've even seen this sediment in the glass "window" when I backwash. I've changed the sand three times, and I still get it. I wonder how to filter it out.
