SoftwareDev 101 wow I really needed to see this comment. I think a lot of people associate “talent” with art/performance (singing, acting, etc) and because they can’t do any of those, they feel worthless. Thank you for saying this. We forget about the “talents” that cant easily be quantified or seen (empathy, pursuasion, etc) ❤️

I remember my sculpting professor telling me this when we talked about my grades at the end of the year. He said to me "I have to tell you that your sculptures at the beginning of the year weren't the best but I see you during breaks still working on the project. I see the way you're focused on making it perfect and working hard to get there. And I see the improvements. There are talented people out there, but if they don't hone their skills, those who work hard will always surpass them. In the end, hard work beats talent." It's been over 5 years since he told me that and its stuck to me

Talent, unfortunately, is in many cases pretty poisonous because it makes people believe that they can achieve great things without the necessary grind. Because of that, talented people can be blocked by the worst enemy we have in life: ourselves. If things come easy and people tell us all the time how talented we are, we might tend to put anything else in the shadow.

I watch others draw masterpieces I can't dream of drawing, other sing with the voice of an angel that I will never have, I see gifted people that make me think I am worthless, I always struggle with the fact that I can't understand how others feel, I have no sense of being able to read emotion whatsoever. but I don't think about those things... I think about how I'm years ahead of my class. I focus on my passion for writing. I came across one of your videos on you tube where you interviewed Jim Quick and wow it was so inspiring . Since then I watched so many of your videos and I cannot describe how insightful they have been. Thank you for everything. The one thing that resonates with me the most about your videos is the fact that you do not just talk about the success but how to fall in love with the process. The motivation I get from your videos is not just extrinsic but for me it’s more of internal. I am very happy because it grants me the understanding that it’s okay to work hard it’s okay to gradually get to your purpose and not just to want or achieve everything so quickly. I am so passionate because In high school I actually went through this process in my life and seen dramatic results but then hit a massive plateau. But now seeing your videos I have learned that it’s okay and it’s all a part of that journey called success.

I discovered my gift and got complacent with it, maybe because it came effortlessly... organically as it kind of found me (much to my surprise). I enjoy using this gift but it’s only been in very small doses, but I lost my drive and therefore lost my purpose. It’s hard to respect yourself when you have a gift, yet don’t put in the work to use for the betterment of mankind. So having natural talent is one thing, but we still have to put in the effort to apply it and to continually evolve. I’m nowhere near my full potential... but this video gave me an enormous inspirational kick in the butt. Thank you so much. I’m going to get on it! People want someone they enjoy working with to get promoted... it’s common sense. Thank you Tom I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from the content you put out and the people you interview. And wish we can have and share messages with respect and compassion for non-human animals-they are far from being “just a stupid animal.” Human animals learn from non-human animals if we open our minds and hearts. We exist among them, not on top-they certainly know how to live in harmony with nature much more than most human animals. Circle of life. I love your messages otherwise. Thank you again for the videos and amazing interviews and really admire your story. 🙏🙏😊

Life is not what you did and what you going to do it is what you are doing. We live in the present not past or future. So people if u are said u have done something u can do better and if u are going to do something than u do it without no excuse.

The thing is to be great you can only do so much for yourself, still need to be given that OPPORTUNITY. Like Henry Rollins the guy worked hard yeah, but was given a random opportunity. Lots of people got talent and skill but it often translates in people being jealous and shutting others down no matter how good they are. That and yeah you can make opportunities for yourself but the big SECRET is it often involves money from yourself or someone willing to give you a chance.

I’m not naturally gifted at playing basketball. I’ve lost games against people who hardly play the sport. I practice almost everyday to hone my skills but to no avail. But I realised one thing. although I may not be naturally gifted I have heart and drive, I will show far more empathy and a willingness to learn. And that is something I’m proud of, I can apply this drive to anything I’m passionate about, I just need to work smarter rather than harder. From the first bit of progress I’ve seen I’ve been growing since then. Yes there have been some days worse than others but I just see it as a wake up call.
