Good report on running fridge/freezer from generator...here in Louisiana during Hurricane Ida last year we were without electricity for almost 2 weeks...we had a small 5000 BTU window unit we put in the LR area & 2 fridge/freezers hooked to the generator...we ran the generator for 5 hours ON then 3-4 hours OFF and didn't run after midnight. We stayed pretty much in LR/kitchen area & shut all other doors...that small ac unit kept the house pretty comfortable & we didn't lose any food..

We were hit by Laura and Delta here in central Louisana. I`m on disability so I decided then and there to never get caught in a situation like that again and began investing in as many solar tools and batteries as possible. I started with power banks, rechargeable batteries, solar panels, then solar power stations and products that I can use with them, even cookers. My relatives have called me every name in the book for prepping. They laughed at me a year ago when I told them to buy extra food before prices rose. My sister is obsessed with expiration dates and hoarder TV shows though and when I had to stay with her while I went through the disability process she threw away every prepping item I was able to get. Lost all my seeds, rice, beans, grits, molasses, honey, sea salt...everything. She and my nephew have nearly drove me to a nervous breakdown because I`m building an emergency solar power system in my camper for hurricanes. I want independence, safety, security, low electric bills, and peace...and they can`t stand it. It amazes me. Unbelievable! She and my nephew live in two houses on the same big lot. Both are loaded with money but have absolutely no emergency supplies of any kind. Power goes out...they can`t cook anything and use cheap, low quality LED lanterns. They do have gas for heaters though...and during the Winter storm in 2021, even though they have an outdoor shed, coolers, tons of totes...all their food in two freezers and three refrigerators spoiled inside the house. Imagine that! I have solar power for my fridge and freezer and by May my window air conditioner will be running from the power of the sun using 780 watts of solar, my 300ah battery, a 60 amp MPPT charge controller, and a 2000 watt AC inverter. I need two more panels, a fuse bolt, ground wire, and a battery meter and it will be finished. A poor homeless dog showed up three weeks ago so I had to put off buying parts to help her with food, dog house, flea collar, and a blanket. They still don`t get it after the Winter storms and two hurricanes! They HOUND ME and call me names and laugh at me!

@@kathym2501 You can power a chest freezer (manual defrost only) from a Bluetti EB70 for 24 hours or every day if it`s sunny if connected to two 100 watt solar panels connected in parallel. If it`s cloudy run a gas generator and recharge it in 4 hours. My 500 watt solar power stations run my 3.1 cubic ft manual defrost dorm fridge for 24 hours. I got two of each so I can charge the others while using the other two. I have no transportation, very rural area, so I invested in what I had to so I could have some security here. I was finally able to get a big 300 ah Ampere Time battery. By May I should have the two other solar panels and battery meter needed to run my small air conditioner from the sun. God I hope it works the right way. I want to be able to buy meat instead of paying for high electric bills that keep going up and not die after hurricanes.

Hi from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, love your videos,. we just passed through hurricane fiona here and its really bad, no light, no water, had many flooding , people lost their homes and lost many of their furniture. We started preparing more when we went through Hurricane Maria. Got solar panels and a generator, prepped with food, water, supplies etc. For this hurricane found many holes in our preps so we are fixing that. Its not easy to go through a mayor hurricane even if you are prepared, but its bearable. Also you need entertainment because eventually you are going to get bored and frustrated 😞.

I actually started preparing my home for this storm. Friday. Along with your supplies. Most women make sure all laundry is done ahead floors are mopped dusting is done and things are put away inside the home. Plan for a game or movie to keep children busy and distracted the storm noises. Same for adults. If power does go out your favorite music helps. Or A car DVD player. To watch a movie or a movie projector to watch. Card games as simple as GO FISH! Some music and a puzzle. At my house we have to prepare for 2 weeks without power. Most of the time in a bad storm that's is how long it can take to restore power. 2 WEEKS!! Do not plan for only 1-2 days. Always plan for at least 4. If it doesn't happen great. If it does you have what you need to get you through. Also make sure chainsaws and lawnmowers are good to go. If you can have a small wagon on the back of lawnmower to pull around the yard to pick up debris. Saves your back and time in hot summer heat. And the gas and oil to run them. Already stuck back. If you ever go through 1 just 1 storm unprepared. You will swear. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!! AND MEAN IT!!

Yep, we were 2 weeks without power in Ivan, really appreciated clean towels & multiple changes of clothing each day after working in sweltering heat & humidity. It was a Category 5, but when it hit my area it was a Category 2. This Category 2 ripped off my concreted in heavy duty patio cover along the entire length of the back of my house. Winds and a tree limb destroyed our roof. Thankful for great homeowners insurance. Don’t play with a hurricane just because it’s “just” a category 2. WOW! Thank you for mentioning that the large battery back up is NOT actually a generator! The radio with NOAA channels is nice... so long as it's one where you can set it to be silent unless there is an alert... otherwise, we all really should have other equipment capable of playing 162.400 to 164.550 MHz narrow/wide FM anyway. The solar on that one will probably take 72 hours of sunlight (9 days worth) to fully charge. The solar chargers are often a complete and total joke in reality, as are the crank chargers for most of these. Also, don't forget that for many of these... if you have to supply the batteries... they might need to be rechargeable for any of the recharge options to even work. As far as the butane stove... probably works fine in most Florida temps... not so well if it's really cold... so... NOT prepped to survive THAT SHTF. I, personally, don't even buy 12 gauge extension cords, yes they make 10 and even thicker but in most cases I think 10 is thick enough. Yup... run chest freezers for only 2 hours a day if needed... less efficient freezers and fridged require MUCH MORE time per day though. Cash is great to have... don't forget that longer established facilities should be able to go old old old school and make a carbon copy print of your card that will actually be charged days later as well... but you may have to remind them that this is an option and in reality was how all transactions used to be done. We've had a lot of rain this year so the lakes are high, roads have already been washed out and there's water standing in most areas. If we do get hit, there will be a lot of flooding. I hope Ian passes you by. We were also in the direct path of Irma.

@@sunshinestatesurvival The trajectory has turned north west and they're predicting it will hit just above Tampa. If it stays on that course, we'll get some outer bands but that's it. My house was built in 1955 and is solid concrete block, so I feel very safe here. And I know God is beside me all the way. In my last comment, I forgot to add to your comment about fires. When Irma hit us, the local bowling alley got struck by lightning. Due to the storm, fire trucks weren't going out and the bowling alley was destroyed. So you're right. Fire is a real possibility.

If you get plywood cut to fit your windows. Lowe's also sells metal clips to fit the plywood. Placem them on the edges of the plywood. The tooth like edges of the clips will bite into your brick or what ever surrounds your window and hold the plywood into place. You may have to ask for the clips. They are a little pricey. But makes the process of putting the plywood into place and taking down much easier and faster. When you are done. Label the plywood for each piece for each window. And mark top and bottom. Save these for later use. And your clips. Since the wood totally blocks your view. I leave one small window. Open. To see outside. That is just my preference!! You do what is safe for you!! I have a small kitchen window on the back side of my home. I leave it unblocked to see all of my back yard sky and trees. I watch how bad the tree tops are whipping around to kind of judge the winds outside. That is just me!! You do what is best for you and your situation and family.

I like getting a gallon plastic bag, fill it with water, put it inside another one. Lay it over your food in the freezer, it molds around the food to keep everything frozen longer. Also if you can't reach someone by calling, try texting. Sometimes it's easier to get through by text.

I grew up in Southern Louisiana in the 60s and 70s. When I was 6 we were living in Houma, South of New Orleans. We had a hurricane coming and my mom, from Iowa, taped the windows up so tight you couldn't see out lol. That's about the only thing I remember about that hurricane. My ex husband moved to Florida a few years ago. I asked him if he was preparing for this hurricane. He said they were going to wait a few days and see where it's going. Well ok! Good luck!

Good review of hurricane preps. I'm praying that Ian changes course and heads out to sea. For years I stacked sandbags the wrong way, then saw a video on how they should be done. You only fill a bag half way, lay it down, and the next filled bags gets laid on the empty part of the previous bag. Repeat. It keeps water from leaking through. Be safe and God bless.💜✝

Two years ago we were warned of a storm that was not supposed to be any worse than a bad thunderstorm. That storm hit land and became a Cat4 storm. Fortunately I had storm preps already in place. But it definitely took everyone by surprise. These storms can take a turn at the last minute and all of a sudden be coming your way. It has done that as well. Even a 1-2 degree shift. Can aim them at you. Mosquito repellent is a must. Tarps are very important for roof. As well as nails and 2x4 for roof. The more you can prepare ahead. Keeps you out of lines at stores or food and water lines. Where tempers are short and people panic to get these things. And many cities and towns usually put out a boil water announcement. So have plenty of water. You can fill a garbage can of extra water and place in garage or on carport and keep a tight lid. A clean can with no drainage holes in bottom. I keep 2 stuck back so they stay clean and store many of my storm supplies in them. I fill them right before a storm and store them on my carport for extra water.

Clothesline rope and pins for hanging out clothes or towels to dry. A tarp can make a canopy for shade outside to grill or cook or shade to get outside to catch any breezes if power is out. The old folks would sit under the trees to keep cool. You can use kitchen dish towels to put around your neck to keep cool. Just soak them in water. Wring them out and wrap your neck especially for your elderly that may overheat easily. A small dish pan of water to place your feet in will also help to cool someone that gets overheated. Wipe their face arms and legs with water. And cool drinks. Gatorade in packets. Stores well. And helps replace electrolytes. Stay hydrated!! Drink extra fluids. A hand fan. Helps! And loose clothing. A damp towel over the top of your head. The heat is no joke!! We take our air conditioning for granted. But if you don't have it to go to. Be ready. NO candles around small children. They can bump them over before you know it. Lanterns battery operated are better and much safer. And less for you to worry about. Home made popsicles or ice cubes help with kids. Can be made from fruit juice or kool aid. Safety precautions are of extra importance. In those times when you may be distracted or stressed. Give each child their own small flashlight. It is simply a mental security thing for your child. If you do have to leave your home. Keep those little glow brackets and necklaces for kids to help keep track of them

@@pinkpigletparker8703 I think the misunderstanding is that the fan cage is only 5-1/4" in diameter (multiply that by 25.4 to get mm). It LOOKS like the bigger ones you're used to seeing. A phone charging brick will easily run it. I didn't run it all the way out, so I don't know how long it will last. Quite a few battery based chargers also have the USB port for charging phones. Example, the car boost chargers with the little air compressor built in I keep in my trunk has two USB ports that will work. The Jackery has USB charging ports, the little Ryobi inverter that plugs into their 18v tool battery has two of the ports. I should put together a video testing these things. It's real easy for me to suggest stuff in the comments on someone else's video. Unfortunately, my comment isn't very helpful without more information/visuals.

Then pour in a small amount of kitty litter to absorb liquids and keep down smells when you open the bucket. And more kitty litter when needed. Wal Mart also sells a toilet lid to fit a 5 gallon bucket in the camping section. You can also cut open a pool noodle and cut it to fit the round top of your bucket. You will thank me later.
