Sunshine State Survival

Sunshine State Survival

Just a mom, son (and pup) preparing for whatever may come in this world. This channel has been a journey in preparedness for us. We learn more everyday and get more prepared as the days go by...but for some reason, the more prepared I get, the less prepared I feel!

I encourage anyone who happens to stumble across this channel to start preparing. 2020 was a crazy year and I have a feeling it's going to get crazier. We can all feel it deep down in our gut. If you found this channel, it was for a reason.

    Actually having hand warmer in your SHTF medical box would be actually useful, especially when winter hits you could probably save a lot of lives and mostly hands getting frostbite

    Backpack and food, sleep, & first aid supplies for the dog - he can carry his own stuff. A lot of what you've got could be lightened up, maybe one item at a time. Check out backpacking gear. If you pick camp locations well you don't need the big shovel or an axe. In 50 years of camping and backpacking I've never needed either. Use a small ultralight trowel in a poop kit. Your son can carry a kit of his own. You want to keep the kits as light as possible, especially if you have to walk long distances. Work gloves are essential! Glad to see you have sunscreen and bug repellent. People often forget them and then they are miserable. I prefer the sawyer squeeze over the mini. If can get a CNOC 2L 28mm thread water bag to use for dirty water and you can set up a gravity purification with either 2 1L Smart bottles or CNOC 28mm thread 1L collapsible bottles.

    Forgive me if im not understanding but why waste a gallon size for 2lb of beans? You could cut off the excess and seal the bottom of that extra piece mak8ng a whole second bag to use. For the o2 absorbers you could throw them in a small snack size baggie fast and they wont have much o2 in there leaving more for your next sealing bag.

    I disagree but everyone gets to make their choice! I have wasted food that I didnt pack for long term storage. I also have food in #10/gallon sized steel cans I bought in 1999! We were newly weds. I worked six or seven days a week. I paid $1.10 per #10 can for wheat berries and now a can at cost is $6.33! I stack boxes of 6 cans to the ceiling. Very space efficient! Ive bought newer to replace it and as our economy tanks Ill be eating those cans of food I stored 25 years ago. Ive experianced the concern of deprivation. 20 years ago I lost a job of five years. My husband was paid to write his thesis so when he was done, he was unemployed too! Then we learned the state didnt pay into unemploment for student jobs! All but one summer internship was student jobs. He got $171 a week in unemployment. It barey covered our rent and car payment. And our car was only two years old so we didnt qualify for food stamps! Thank goodness we had stored cleaners, food and toiletries! I had a real fear of deprivation! We turned the heat to 55 degrees. We survived being unemployed ahy of four months! If you stop at just a few weeks of food sure! I dont have to worry about rotation I still have years! My friend got ill, wasnt rotating, and his family could efficiently stack it in storage for when he was healthier! Google enemie of food storage. There are times when best intention are moot. Costco just had the black totes with yellow lids on a cheaper sale than a Lowes sale. I bought them as I hope to freeze dry and put mylar in those. Im turning 50 and Ive seen multiple recessions. You are not saving money if it is not stored properly and your hard earned miney is wasted trying to save a buck.

    Even though what you stated was incorrect, to me the riddle was about that 10%. If chickens only provide 90% of the chickens we eat, where does the other 10% come from?

    For Dollar Tree items, that was a pretty good bugout bag haul. For my bugout bag, I would get water, food, hygiene, medicines, first aid stuff, some entertainment items, etc., at Dollar Tree. There are things I won't get at Dollar Tree. Like you said, the knife and other items we should invest in more quality items.

    #1 ON MY LIST IS PRAYER....BIBLE SAYS YOU WILL HAVE WHAT YOU SAY. I SPEAK TO THE STORM IN JESUS NAME, TO DISAPATE, GO BACK WHERE IT CAME FROM, BE STILL. IF ENOUGH PEOPLE WOULD REALLY PRAY, AND IN FAITH BELIEVING, WE CAN LESSEN AND/OR TOTALLY ANIALATE ANY STORM. YES DO EVERYTHING WE CAN DO TO BE SAFE, FED, CLOTHED, SHELTERED, CHECK ON OTHERS, UNPLUG ALL EKECTRONICS (if electric goes out and/or flickers) it may cause a serge which can FRY everything. Once you unplug everything then turn the main electrical breaker OFF. When electricity comes back on, turn the breaker back on and plug everything back in. Hopefully this will be helpful. I live in Florida and have gone thru 2 hurricanes back to back. Hopefully, you have a battery operated radio and flashlights + a good supply of batteries. Try to Use LED flashlights/lanterns. They are brighter and last much longer. THIS IS JUST A FEW SUGGESTIONS TO HELP. BLESSINGS TO ALL. STAY SAFE.

    You bring up a very sensible point. It's also good to remember that if food production is halted, or supply chain is disrupted, or shipping becomes impossible for any reason, what you have may be all you can get. One year food supply may not be enough, especially if you are the kind of person who can't turn away a hungry child or starving neighbor. I used to pick up a 25 lb. bag of beans or rice at Super1 for $20 every month for 'them'. Prices have gone up so much the past few years but it's still one of the cheapest ways to get shelf stable calories. One pound of beans or grain is generally in the neighborhood of 1,600 calories per day, which is just barely enough to survive on. Lately the least expensive place for bulk beans and rice seems to be Winco which is still in the $18 to $30 range for 25 lb. bags.

    I know these are simple everyday foods good for prepping. I really wish someone would come up with a simple cookbook for emergency food supplies. There are a lot of creative cooks out there who could write one with recipes needing few ingredients from those items common to prepping.

    After many hurricanes, my advice is Do Not Stay home. Absolutely NOTHING you can do during the landfall except get hurt or killed. Going to any shelter is always the best choice. Our church is a large brick designated shelter ….. can’t think of a better place to be 🙏🏼

    I did the same I bought some Banner sausage meat pork meat and I also thought it was patties. But don't be deceived this is delicious if you add a sofrito of bell peppers and onions and garlic and let it cook until it is the consistency of corned beef where are all the liquids gone

    Just bumped into your video great review over your two bags! The mountain house is a great idea for you and your son if you both share a bag you will have enough food for at least definitely 2 weeks with the Mountain House. Right now I'm intermittent fasting so I'm trying to eat one meal perhaps one snack a day...... so this would help a lot in a situation where you need to be careful with your food. I love those emergency block cookies they're delicious and I know they're heavy but those two packages of cookies can definitely give you an extra 2 days worth maybe 3 days worth of rations pending how far you're walking and the situation in hand. The strawberry snacks are a great idea you might also if you're not allergic add very small packages of nuts of peanuts or almonds or walnuts or a mixture. Does a coffee is a good idea I'm a major coffee drinker I would probably have that thing jam-packed LOL with coffee with slivers but that's me lol. What kind of shovel was that by the way because I have two collapsible shovels but that one looks very Hardy and probably more handy than the two that I have right now. And even though the shovel would be a bit heavy I think it would be worth the extra weight. Going to look at the katadyn water system myself. I know some of these things might be a little pricey but it's worth it if the situation arises where you need it. You know that old adage it's better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it I tried going through my backpack at least once every two months to review and to add it's always fun putting stuff back LOL challenging is the word again great video thank you so much for your hard work Carrie let's hope and pray we do not need to bug out my intention is to stay in but like you said there are circumstances that will make us leave like floods or fires or War just to name a few. And if the situation at hand is to risky to stay put you definitely have to take off.

    why don't you cut a slit the in oringinal bag put a o2 asorber and put the whole thing in the mylar bag? why does your heading say do not use mylar bags for long terms storage

  • @sunshinestatesurvival
    @sunshinestatesurvival2 ай бұрын

    I don't know how long those materials will last before breaking down inside of the mylar bag. As much as I hate to admit it, the title was click bait, and it worked. My main point was that it's more important to have the food in your house, so if you can't afford mylar bags right away, at least have the food!

  • @danmichans
    @danmichans2 ай бұрын

    I found it on those 5 lb bags of flour if you turn it upside down and then slip the 1 gallon mylar bag over it, then when you turn it up right it'll be the right direction, then I take a knife poke a small hole in the paper bag, drop a oxygen absorber in there and seal it up leaving all the flour in the original container, works very good
