If Truck Randomly Shuts Off THIS MIGHT BE WHY!! If Car or Truck Randomly Shuts Down This May Be Why!! Chevy Bulkhead Connector!! GMC Bulkhead Connector!! #randomShutdown #truckShutsOff #bulkheadConnector
In this video I take a look at the bulkhead connector that passes through the firewall of my 1995 GMC Suburban. This bulkhead connector plug is where the wires transfer from inside the cab to the engine bay.
I have been having an issue for a very long time where my truck would randomly shut down. There would be no warning or symptom just a complete shutdown. Back when it first started happening I would fix various wiring issues like the battery cables as well as upgrading all the cables and adding various grounds to the system. I thought through all this upgrading I had fixed the problem but just the other day it happened again. It's been years since it happened last and this time it happened in the middle of an intersection. I knew I had to once and for all figure this out...

Intermittent electrical. First, don't ever take the firewall pass thru block apart unless you are replacing it. That's the last thing you do before you give up and rewire the whole vehicle. Splitting that box can be like opening Pandora's box. Check your fuel pump power lead from source to pump. Look at it, NOT continuity check. You've changed your fuel pump, lifted the truck, some other stuff. Check that power source wire from one end to the other for a pinched or chaffing wire, loose connection. Also, ignition switch wiring for the same issues. You could have a jenke ignition switch, or maybe the plug on the switch is loose or wires chaffed against a bracket under the dash. If it only happens after the truck is good and warmed up, take the ignition module out of the distributor to an auto parts store and have it checked. They aren't very expensive and and it will be cooled of when you check it so...

Jimmy, you're a rock star! This wasn't the exact problem with my 2012 Silverado, but immediately sent me in the right direction after viewing this. My truck started randomly dying , usually right after starting it. No run, no crank was the only symptom. Warning lights, a/c blower, radio all functioned fine. After several attempts to restart, it'd finally go and run fine. It did this every day for about a week until I saw this vid. I saw another KZread video that showed how to separate the under-hood fuse box from the base. I took it apart and found the dozens of pins that plug in had a lot of chalky oxidation on them. With a knife blade and 400 grit sandpaper, I carefully cleaned them all up. Upon reassembly, I noticed a relay labeled "run/crank". There were 4 other identical relays plugged in, so I swapped that one with one labeled "running lamps". I'm not sure which was the problem, but it's been 2 weeks and the problem has not recurred. Thanks for the video. Helped me sort my problem out quickly.

Nice Jimmy. One other wire you need to check for preventive maintenence, is the ignition bypass wire inder the passenger side dash. There's a connector there that you disconnect to set the timing. The contacts there in mine corroded and became intermittent. I fixed it by opening up the harness to access that wire (brown if I recall) and I soldered extension leads about 12" long to each side. Put back together and then solder the two ends. Wrap up the excess wire with tie-wrap. To set timing, I will unfurl the wires and cut the end off opening the circuit. Then re-solder and re-stow those wires. It will never again become intermittent. Truck did not die, but stumbled horribly as the ECU lost control of spark timing (EST).

One great thing about owning a vehicle for many years is the familiarity you gain with it. I'm sure that was a help to find this problem. I, being an outside the box thinker, would have bypassed the connector block by splicing that wire from inside the engine compartment through the bulkhead to under the dash. You would eliminate any issue with that connector box and have easy access to that wire if needed. Regardless, I can't fault your fix. Nice job.

If your rpm gauge ever pounces at idle (not with rpm) but just flutters (it's hard to explain) but the coil is bad and it would be good to change the distributor aswell. Some people will say to change the icm under the cap but that may not fix it and if it does the pickup coil is not far behind it.

Today while driving my truck started missing like it was out of gas , the Guage is Messed up but I pulled over and it died , my husband came by and we put 9 gallons in it and it still won't start , I can hear the fuel pump running when I turn the key on so I know it isn't that. Any ideas ? It's on a 98 Silverado. I'm worried cause that truck is my baby. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

I would've dabbed a little hot glue in that terminal to keep it in for sure but good job. What's a PSA?? Or do you mean PAS?

I assume that wire is fuel pump power wire!

I had a 2002 Saturn SL2 that would not start after turning car off (happened in 2010), it would get me home in limp mode, and I had a hard time trying to figure it out. The GM dealer shop could not solve it either. Car would start and run most of the time, but when it died I would have to wait a while and it would start again. I can't remember what lights would blink, but it seemed it had to do with the anti-theft system or the bcm. Then while checking all the inside fuses, I touched the thick red wire that went from the underhood fuse box to the inside fuse box, and it was loose. I rigged another positive 12v wire from the underhood fuse box to the inside box and the problem was solved. I just stuck the ends of the wire into the unused +12v fuse buss sockets, I know the fuse box would fall apart if I opened it. I ran the car 6 more years till the coolant manifold broke and then scrapped the car in 2016. While the Saturn ran well, it was the quietest 4 cylinder car I ever owned, even compared to my Corolla.

Those have a ignition switch problem. Pull the column panel down and wiggle the ignition switch wires pay attention to the large red wire it is ignition-1.

Ok so let me ask you this, because on my 95 silverado 5.7 tbi. I had a similar issue. Anyone i got some gas, rode not even 5 miles up the road. Pulled a parking lot and went over a speed bump. As I'm going over, the truck just immediately dies. No jumping like it's struggling to get fuel or anything. Honestly it was so suddle. I didn't notice it until I tried to give it some gas. Then it cut off two more times without me going over a speed bump in the same parking lot. I checked the battery terminals, they were good. I even tried moving the around to see if it would affect the truck running. Typically this would only cause an issue if the alternator was being over worked. I played with the wires around the distributor and nothing. I played with the alternator wires. And nothing.. any ideas? Because I'm loat at this point.

Ignition control module. Get a GM one and use good thermal paste. I’ve owned 6 GMT400s over last 20 years

@@1RoadGarage with the amount of work you put into that truck a single vehicle subscription to alldatadiy would be a worthwhile investment. It’s like $99 or something. Complete factory service info and all diagrams. Those aftermarket books can lead you astray. Alldata is what the pros use. Just a thought

@@chandracarol232 i think mine was the battery. It hadn’t been started in a long time because I had a bad tire so I was driving my other car. It only did it for a couple days but I’ve been driving it since and it hasn’t died anymore.
