Renham’s stress speech reminded me of Bono on stage once. Bono pre song is giving a message to the audience and goes ‘every time I click my fingers, a child dies in Africa’ - to which one someone in the audience shouts back ‘we’ll stop clicking your f**king fingers then!’

Your mention of British calm in event of a fire reminded me of a true story- The Queen's Private Secretary Sir Michael Adean was accosted by a Royal biographer one day when leaving Buckingham Palace. Adeane listened sympathetically, although the visitor did detect just the faintest impression that Adeane would like to be moving on. It was another minute or two before he said: “I do hope you’ll forgive me, but I’ve just heard that my house is on fire. I wouldn’t mind, but as it’s part of St James’s Palace . . .”

That changing the phone number bit is based on what really happened when they replaced directory enquiries which used to have one number which was free, with dozens of competing companies with different numbers and various prices. Even worse, they were paid by volume, with no penalty for accuracy, so one company just gave everybody the number for pizza hut no matter what they asked for, and churned through thousands of customers an hour.

The name is sort of a double meaning. The IT Crowd and The I.T. Crowd. Back when the show was made the word "it" was a thing. The most famous example, I think, was Paris Hilton and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. They were know as "it" girls. I'm honestly not sure what "it" meant. Probably being famous because they were famous. So you have the "IT" crowd who are a bunch of famous, cool, people. And the "I.T" crowd who are the complete opposite.
