If the Eagles may be miming - Who else? Could I have watched concerts and not realised?

Музыка

In my video a couple of weeks ago I looked at some evidence suggesting the Eagles may be miming. I received some comments asking to look into whether any other big artists are miming. I looked for footage of some of the artists I've seen live to see if they may have been miming.

I've been going to concerts since 1971. I never heard a live performance the same as the LP they were promoting. Some of the older groups that I've seen in recent years do not sound like they did. It's just not physically possible, and I don't expect them to. I just want an honest performance. If they can't, then they need to stop touring. A couple of the groups have added female background singers to help with the higher notes and have added additional musicians because they can't play like they used to, which is very acceptable. "All I want is the truth! Just give me some truth." Great post, and thank you.

Robert Plant has been very good a re-arranging songs to fit his voice as he has aged.

I'm GLAD you checked out Fil on his channel, Wings of Pegasus ". There's NO POSSIBILITY that a real vocal could be IDENTICAL several years apart!! As for Elton, I had noticed that he did change his range on certain parts. And during the PHENOMENAL LIVE AID concert, Freddie Mercury was having throat trouble, & his Dr. actually told him he shouldn't perform! If you listen, he has a couple notes that kind of crack a bit. The GREAT THING IS THAT ITS GENUINE!! It makes a person REAL & AUTHENTIC!! Im very grateful to have been born at such a perfect time for music!!

Re Dolly. I was listening to her set on the radio. She sang some of her classics. Then she improvised a song about people in the mud. Her voice then was totally different. I recently watched some of her Glasto set, and there are occasions when her mouth doesn’t match what’s coming over the speakers. Miming? Definitely!

The one singer who is (or was) a certainty not to mime was Ray Charles.

I think older singers should drop a semitone or a tone. I was playing along to a U2 track the other day and wondered why I sounded so off (other than being normally shite lol) and had to drop a semitone to get the sound right.

Quite ironic really; lots of years ago, the Musician’s Union required acts to mime on TV. Fast-forward to the late 70’s and the (same) MU mounted a ‘Keep Music Live’ campaign. Now here we are, back with miming but not it’s ‘Live’ performances!!

Artists should be forced to say what backing tracks they use at a concert just like you can read the ingredients and additives in food before you make a purchase. Vocal miming is akin to Botox in my view. David Bowie would often change keys if his voice wasn’t up to it and he always sounded good. He even pulled off headlining Glastonbury with laryngitis.

Thank you for alerting us to who is miming. I have just had to watch Eurovision! I Shazamed every track and got a result in seconds. I guess that means they were all miming. Can you use your platform to expose this fraud? My bet is on Vanilly Manilly for 2025!

Great video . yeah Elton Johns apperance in 2020 was a bit froggy, he was better at Glasto. . Rod isnt that good anymore - he was better 10 years ago. Chris Stapleton is great - grreat blues androck voice . Please check Cliff Richards last concert video ( Sapphire tour ) - he is certainly miming there - i have been to four concerts and he sounded the same in each of them , Plus he missed beginning of the lyrics. please check ( I adore him and he is great entertainmer , he was great in the tours before 9 especially 2019/2019 which was complety live ) but he was certainly miming quite a lot in the concert , not in every song though .. .

Another by the way - since i'm just watching this video and my other comment basically was about the other eagles video from three weeks ago - 04:14 musicians are forced into miming since the 70s professionally, so everybody should be good at it - and these days technology should be also good enough to add just enough overdub to let some impurities in for the suspicious listener. I won't never ever trust the show biz - would be a big mistake. I'd just take the fassade as it is and enjoy the music.

Roger Waters has a pre-recorded track that he sometimes sings too as he's live mic, sometimes mimes to, but I cut him some slack. Because, when you see a Waters gig, it's a Floyd-esque show as much visual as audio; he never had a great voice anyway; he and Floyd were pioneers of live rock music and live improvisation. He's done his time in live decades. Also, because it's a show in synch with multiple graphics and effects, everything has to fit the timing perfectly. This isn't four lads anymore at student unions doing live 'Ummagumma'. He also plays to a click track. But he has backing singers and other band members doing vocals. And I don't think it's any secret among Waters fans. Unlike the Eagles, who pretend to do everything live, don't have major graphics that need to be synched, etc., and did not pioneer live rock music and live improvisation! p.s. I saw Floyd play and sing The Wall live in 1981, so have seen Waters do it for real as a younger chap!

Roger Waters can still legitimately get away with it as fans don't go to see him singing and playing while just standing there and nothing else going on around him. It's a huge audio-visual event, plus his band all singing and playing. So you get your money's worth. Everyone else though, I agree with you - or adapt to the musical styles you sing, within your range - like Robert Plant.

I've heard recently - because everyone get's caught right now, thanks to youtube and smartphones - that it's the companies, which are insisting on the artist miming to playback tunes, because they want at least good sound for the extraordinary ticket prices these days. And from that perspective, it's understandable. Most old artists don't have a voice anymore - if they play without playback, it sounds nowhere near the album tracks, we're expecting to hear. I've seen some terrible stuff on YT from 80 year old Gordon Lightfoot, for instance. By the way - usually men's voices get higher with age, womens voices get deeper, as far as i know the state of this science - and you also often hear the evidence in radio talks too. But, of course, that doesn't mean, the high pitched voice of an 80 year old singer sounds good or hit's a tune - it just sounds like a young boy. I bet, 90 year old Willie Nelson needs a lot of electronic help these days too not to sound related to dying Johnny Cash, but keeping a bit of tonal volume.

  • @werner.x

@@HumbleTrader001 I'm sure, it differs anyhow. Tendency seems to be, that the pitch of the normal men's voice gets higher with age. Since most people don't sing in their normal voice anyhow, so it may even be irrelevant, what Science says here. I'm sure, no older man reaches his headvoice later, when he had decided to use the headvoice for his singing career. Voice get's also thinner with age, the other problem. I can see, why they insist of using playback with fossils. TV uses playback since the 70s at least as their standard anyhow - to get the show on screen in the most cost effective way. TV is the least, where you find something real - that's why every musician, who got through TV-shows, should be used to mime, since they force him to.

Plus, most big shows are very precisely timed now to have to finish exactly before some local time restriction. They can't go on and do extended parts for fear of running over. So they pre-record songs, and/or click tracks, to play along to.

Can't you tell when a musician is playing in the right key without checking out your instrument? Do you not have good pitch? Elton used to make a deal about Madonna miming and that he was still playing many songs in the original key.If a player chooses to lower the key to save the voice, so what? If a singer riffs on a well edtablished melody, so what, to a point. They are trying to find a nuance or expression to add to the million times that they have sang the song, as you know, I'm sure. As for miming, that's a no no!!
