If Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were included on Sgt Pepper
Музыка
"Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny lane" were recorded at the beginning of the Sgt Pepper sessions, but were released as a single in early 1967 and not included on the album "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" which was released a few months later. George Martin said that not including them on Pepper was perhaps the greatest mistake of his career. Of course he's right. Arguably the greatest album of all time would have been unarguably the greatest album of all time.
After seemingly infinite possible rearrangements, most people feel that it's important to maintain the basic order and integrity of the Sgt Pepper track sequence. After all, one of the main reasons it is so influential and iconic is because of the order of songs and the great segueways -- the continuous track flow was revolutionary. So how might it have worked?
Since each side is roughly the same length, it makes most sense to add one additional song to each side. Side 1 is slightly shorter, so the longer of the 2 would fit onto side one better, logistically. And also artistically.
i feel it is important that Sgt Pepper begin with the iconic crowd noise and opening sgt pepper track, and finish with a day in the life.
And while it is tempting to say the ending of Mr Kite and the beginning of within you are both sacrosanct, i think the abrupt conclusion of Mr Kite would be a perfect lead-in to an even better last track of side one: the slow, mysterious mellotron of Strawberry Fields, with the final fade-out drums playing into the inner vinyl groove ending (as side 2 of the original vinyl did).
That means side 2 would begin with the bright sound of Penny Lane and that song's final horn note and white noise segues perfectly into the rhythmless tambura of Within You Without You.
To get a feel of how the mix of Mr Kite and Strawberry Fields would blend and end side 1, and how Penny Lane beginning side 2 and segueway into Within you, would sound, i edited a few seconds of fair-use snippets from those 4 songs to show how it would flow. Let me know what you think.

The Beatles wouldn’t have done it though. They would have put a two to three second gap between tracks. They were still recording on a 4 track and it would have sounded too muddy. We could clean it up now but at the time it would have sounded bad and been pointless. Now if they wanted to make it sound uninterrupted, that’s different. But the fade out/in overlapping wouldn’t be there.

I disagree, they’re similar in sound, but definitely still two separate releases with their own concepts and musical directions. I think it’s very cool that The Beatles managed to release two bona-fide *classics* in the year of 1967, and I think it would dilute the greatness of those two releases to combine them into one. The White Album worked perfectly as a double album because of how disjointed yet somehow cohesive the songs were, but I don’t think that combining Pepper and MMT would have a similar effect, it would just be too much of a good thing in my opinion.

While I agree that would be a bonzer album, I don't think it should be. They were two very distinct projects. I would propose as an alternative put Penny and Strawberry onto Pepper, and add the Yellow Sub tracks and other singles onto the MMT album, and not have a YSub album at all. Because even though MMT and YSub were also two distinct projects, they have a commonality in both being soundtracks, but also both not being long enough to be single albums (leaving out all the Martin instrumental stuff). Basically it would be taking the Capitol idea of enlarging the MMT EP into an album by including the singles and compensating for the loss of Penny and Strawberry with the new Y Sub songs. But what would I know...
aw man this was amazing. That transition from Penny Lane into Within You Without You was perfection
Tricky, but by God man you've done it !
You inspired me to make a CD in this order. Thank you so much. I have Strawberry & Penny before the Sgt. LP, but it made sense to have a mix like this. CHEERS!!
I respectfully disagree. I would put "Strawberry Fields Forever" on side 1 between "Fixing a Hole" and "She's Leaving Home". Then I would put "Penny Lane" on side 2 between "Lovely Rita" and "Good Morning Good Morning" adding very few seconds of silence between "Lovely Rita" and "Penny Lane", so it doesn't feel like a rush . But that's simply what makes ME feel a better flow between high vs low energy moments, and weird vs happy feeling moments, and also the changes in keys between songs. But the beatles and their crew would have made a better job, obviously.

Great reasoning, but I'd swap them: Penny Lane is a great side-1-ender just after the abrupt ending of Mr. Kite because of its matching abrupt start, and its reminiscing gives you an extra incentive to flip the side to find Strawberry Fields, a lovely side-beginner with its mellotron and the train leading to a Eurasian voyage into India, with Within You Without You

tough one. MMT's so weird on its own and i honestly think it's one of the beatles' top 3 albums. some days i put it before Revolver. Just not sure how "MMT", "Fool on the Hill" and "Flying" fit into Peppers' mood. the whole album's more moodily psycheledic than Peppers is. having them as 2 separate albums is fine with me.
Producer George Martin said leaving Penny Lane /Strawberry Fields off Sgt Pepper album was a big regret and John was disappointed not to have SF on the album .They would have fitted in perfectly to the continuity and theme of the album and could have replaced, when im 64 / within you without you ,which could have been released as a double sided single

😍Wowie zowie! That works like a charm!😊
I once made a mix of pepper, magical mystery tour and yellow submarine. But I didn't cross fade like this!
I do think you've hit on the best way to stitch them in after the fact, but we'll unfortunately never know how knowing they'd be on the album from early on in its creation would've effected the style of other songs.
Probably if PL and SFF were on Pepper then Lovely Rita would have been in the Magical Mystery Tour film/b-side from that era to be used on the US Magical Mystery Tour LP (could have had a whole Meter Maid sequence in that film related to the magic bus!), and When I'm 64 would have been saved for the Yellow Submarine film/soundtrack (because they were actively stockpiling 'leftovers' at that point for YS). The 64 sequence in YS is a great part of the film, so the song could have easily been making its debut in that capacity. Would have made sense.
I'm on board!
Imagine that plus the Magical Mystery Tour album on one double record for 1967!
I would have loved it if those had been included on Pepper but probably better somewhere in between the other songs leaving “A Day In The Life” as the closer 👍😆
thanks to MMT, I will never be able to associate SF and Penny with Sgt.
I'm sure if SFF and PL we're included Sgt. Pepper wouldn't be 15 tracks so 1 or 2 other tracks would have to go... My guess would be When i'm 64 and Lovely Rita or Good morning good morning (i like the song but it's my guess)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I read, these two songs weren’t ever actually meant for Sgt. Pepper. The record company wanted them to release these two songs as singles since they hadn’t released anything in a while at that point, but the Beatles weren’t necessarily mad about it. I think Paul later said they usually preferred to release stuff as soon as it was ready rather than delaying it
I would keep everything exactly as it is. 👍
Got this crazy idea: Sgt Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, and Yellow Submarine as one insane double or triple album
When I make my playlists I always incude Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane.
To be fair, the whole B side of MMT should be in SP since they were done during the session. Though All You Need is Love was a live "Are Now" recording. Also when MGM reissued Yellow Submarine on DVD they reissued the soundtrack with all the song from the film (Sgt Pepper etc)

If that were the case i reckon it'd be a slightly longer album.
If they were included in Sgt Peppers lonely hearts club band then they wouldn't have been knocked off the charts by Engelbert!
I'd place Strawberry Fields Forever at the end of side A, so both sides end with an epic baroque pop song with a false ending. Then Penny Lane would be the second song of side B after Within You Without You so there is a better transition between its heavy psychedelic sound and the bubblegummy When I'm Sixty Four. Also this way both sides have a McCartney trilogy (Getting Better-Fixing a Hole-She's Leaving Home in Side A, and Penny Lane-When I'm Sixty Four-Lovely Rita in Side B).

I’m old enough to remember the vinyl and side 1 is just perfect so I would touch that running order. The only thing about SF is it’s a little quieter than Pepper mixes so would have had to be cut to fit in level wise. George Martin said leaving SF & PL off Pepper was the biggest mistake he ever made. Including those two tracks would have nade Pepper hands down, without question the greatest pop album ever made.
I sure wish they had. It would have made the album that much better.
Should have included revolution no 9 I’ll get me coat 🤭
So good that it fades into side 2!?
If Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane wasn't released as a single I wouldn't have heard either for perhaps two decades. I bought every Beatles 45 as a kid, but didn't have the money for albums.
