I pulled this LP out last night for the first time in years and had forgotten about this version, which came out two years before Lovett's debut album. Great stuff.

Nora Devaney You are NOT alone. I feel utterly compelled to try to write a tribute to the living legend, the egregiously UNDER- rated and UNDER-appreciated Nanci Griffith. Somehow, I need her to know what her words and music have meant to me, even knowing that I can never explain their importance to me, even in saving my life, at times. There will never be a singer and lyrical story teller with talent to equal hers. With her words and music, she can make you long to stand beside the Pontchartrain again, even though you’ve never seen it. When she sings “ I truly need a year down in New Orleans, the hum of a Southern drawl, that I can understand,” I know exactly what she means. For what her words and music mean to me, I’d need a FORTUNE to repay her. All my love to Nanci Griffith. ❤️

Now they all sat around in a circle They were laughing and all telling lies Then the tall one he bumped in a dollar Oh he said boys I've got nothing to hide Now if the King and the Queen stood together Then the ace he would not be to blame And if the cards were all laid on the table, now darlin' Then love could be more than a game And if the stars didn't shine on the water Then the sun wouldn't burn on the sand And if I were the woman you wanted babe I would not be the woman that I am And I have seen my share of long nights And I have told my share of lies And I have run into the darkness, now darlin' When I saw the look in your eyes But if the night didn't lie in the darkness Then the daylight would be hard to find And if the truth didn't turn to a weakness, now babe I would have never have spoken my mind And if the stars didn't shine on the water Then the sun wouldn't burn on the sand And if I were woman you wanted babe Then I would not be the woman that I am So if you're going out to California Then don't linger in New Mexico And if you think of the one there behind you, there darlin' Then you might not feel so alone And if the stars didn't shine on the water Then the sun wouldn't burn on the sand And if I were the woman you wanted babe I would not be the woman that I am And if I were the woman you wanted babe I would not be the woman that I am

Oh, I figured out what song this is. It's the Lyle Lovett song "If I Were the Man You Wanted." Cool that she's doing Lyle's song. I love both versions.

Wow! This is like finding a new Nanci track. I had the album on my ipod, but for some reason, this didn't transfer when I copied the CD. I've just transferred all my albums to my phone, and I've just checked and there it is! Thanks for posting this and making me look.

It is strange that this song isn't included in the MCA/BMG Records (UK) release. I suppose there must have been some rights issues which prohibited its inclusion in the UK version.

@@stuhh The album doesn't seem to be available on iTunes or on CD in the UK at the moment. I wonder why that is (it was on the same label as Last of the True Believers which is still available).

@@IndigoJo My CD of The Last of the True Believers is actually on Demon Records Ltd/Rounder Records Group and has a 1988 copyright message. The others are all MCA. I would have bought it just before Flyer was released, so about 1994. It must have changed hands after that. (Nanci, we will always love you!)

@@stuhh Yes, I have the Demon Records CD of True Believers as well. In the US both that and Blue Moon were on Philo.

The last time True Believers was released on CD was in 2002 by Rounder Records. If you look on Spotify and Apple Music under the album, it says @ 1986 Rounder Records. Rounder bought Philo in 1982, which sold to UMG in 2010. Poet In My Window, Blue Moon, and Light Beyond These Woods were last released on Philo/Rounder in 2002 on CD. The rights to those albums have never changed since they were released. Nanci's first album on MCA was Little Love Affairs.
