    Great video! Strops can be pricey and you're right about starting with a not so expensive strop, I cut my first one quite a bit. I still have my first strop and I use it only for pastes now and I rarely use it. My favorite strop is a basic 3in linen and leather strop from West Coast Shaving. I find the chromox is great for smoothing a synthetic edge but don't use it on natural edges. I also would use pastes to help maintain an edge when I didn't have very many hones. Must say your honing videos are awesome, you taught me how to hone initially! Eric, keep up the fine work!

    Nicholas your basic West Coast Shaving 3" leather and linen strop sounds great... I just went to West Coast Shaving and found it's got a fantastic price too! ;) Yeah Buddy! I've also found Chrome Ox will definitely help smooth out an synthetic edge! But coming from a natural stone, the edge is fine just stropping on the smooth side of the leather only. Thanks for your great comment and encouragement, and thanks for watching! :) Have a good weekend and take care, my friend! :) #Heart

    *Great tip* if you have a hanging strop with a handle, Razor Emporium sells replacement leathers. Great price too like $30. So you can always just swap them out instead of always buying all new hardware

    Really great information Eric! I too nicked up my first strop really bad, takes a little practice to get the hang of stopping. I have a 3" Razor Emporium Horse Hide that I really like and recently purchased a Kanayama Llama 5k strop which is definitely the best strop I have ever used. Only 2.5" wide though but I didn't have any problem learning how to use the x stroke. Definitely not a beginner strop though. Thanks again brother for the great video! Have a blessed weekend my friend!

    Great video, Eric! I have a Straight Razor Design 3 inch strop and it does have some nicks, but it is all good. I also like the Crox on my fabric to prolong the sharpness of the blade. Lapping films are an inexpensive way to hone for beginners. Take care my friend!

    Excellent video and good information Eric. I would definitely have a tough time picking my favorite strop because the 2 that I have are fantastic. I have a 2 inch Vintage Firehose strop from TomoNagura and I have a 3 inch Midnight Rambler leather strop from the same place. The 3 inch Midnight Rambler strop that I have would be my favorite because I use it way more than the firehose strop. I also recommend the paddle strops for beginners because there's no guess work in selecting the correct grip of angle and they are great for travel too. I pretty much destroyed my first 2 strops which didn't cost hardly anything thank goodness.

    I have tried a few strops in my time including a genuine Solingen strop. However, i find my two best strops are "The Magic Strop" Velvet Hide, my "go to" strop for every day use and the "Scorcher" genuine Horse Hide (shell). The reason i choose these strops is because they are vintage strops of great quality and both have canvas backs. To top up my blades i use two paddle strops lined with felt and impregnated with Chrome Oxide and the other with 0.25 Diamond paste to polish the blades cutting edge.

    That's the chrome ox I have too. My first 3" strop came with my Grim Dollar kit. Now I have a great dual piece 3 1/4" Latigo Leather I love. I did a boo boo and put my chrome ox on the outside linen instead of the one next to the felt side of the other strop

    Do you recommend 3 in strop for smiling blades? I have heard that for these blades a 2 in strop is better as it allows you to do rolling x strokes? Your opinion is much appreciated.

  • @AdventuresInWetShaving

    Great question Nasser! ;) Yeah, Buddy I have a couple of smiling blades and my 3-inch strop works well... you can still do a rolling x-strokes if you want, but your strop should be flexible enough to accommodate a smiling blade. I hope that's helpful, please let me know if you have any other questions. • @AdventuresInWetShaving

    @AdventuresInWetShaving

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great questions Ibrahim! ;) When your straight razor starts to pull you could use the Chrom Ox using 4-7 laps (one lap is back and forth), clean the blade, and then 60 laps on the smooth leather. You should be able to get 12 refreshes before you need to replenish your Chrom Ox. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for your great comment and encouragement, and thanks for watching! :) Have a good day, take care and stay safe my friend! :) #Heart

    is the fabric side of the strop used for just sharpening? and what is the nubuck side for?

  • @AdventuresInWetShaving

    @AdventuresInWetShaving

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great questions II! ;) You can use the fabric side of their strop to dry off their straight razor blade after a shave or after using your finishing stone and then returning back to your finishing stone to get more out of it. You can also use the fabric side to polish and sharpen your straight razor if you use a paste on it like Chrom Ox or diamond paste. Now the nubuck side can be used in all the same ways or you could come off of your finish stone to the Chrom Ox side of yoiur fabric strop for a few laps (or round trips) and then go to the clean side of the fabric for a few laps. Followed by a few laps on the nubuck side of the leather, and finishing on the smooth side of the leather with 40-60 laps. I hope that's helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions, and let me know how you're getting along. Thanks for your great questions and thanks for watching! :) Have a good day, take care and stay safe my friend! :) #Heart

    Get some balsa wood 3" wide from Hobby Lobby or such and lap or sand it dead flat. i bought about 3 pieces all 12" long and one has iron oxide, one chromium oxide and one diamond paste on it. Depends how sharp you like your edges. You keep your leather strop pristine and hardly ever have to return to the stones for honing because you strop your razor on balsa after a shave and on the leather strop before you shave. They cost less than $5 and it's effortless maintenance. Best of all, if you are new and take a chunk out of it - no big deal, lap it flat again and roll on! T
