Since you want to build your home here this is easy to answer: "the caterpillar running away with it." All about creating proper drainage before siting your House. Plus you're gonna need a proper dump truck and trailer for any other work both on the property and for others, start a business, do some hiring, get the cash flow going in that regard too.

That thumb on the mini is going to be your best friend. Open your mind up a little to what you think you can accomplish with one. Loading trailers/trucks, cutting roads into hill sides, felling trees, removing stumps, using a mower for those hard to reach places (around ponds, hillsides, creeks) You wouldn’t want to use it for tracking anything in or bulldozing but you’ve got a skid steer for that.

What would work best for raw land. My family is thinking about getting equipment to work on new land. About 110 Acres. It's full of Manzanita trees dead and live. Has a bunch of old burnt oak and pine trees. Lots of dead stomps to remove. Lots of rocks everywhere. What would you recommend in this area?

You need something that drives off road......so you need a tractor or quad. But the tractor can have blades and pto. Get a tractor, and rent an excavator. And buy a quad when your neighbors kid kills himself with it and they don't want it anymore.

Maybe I'm making this too simple but... A tractor can do it all and without tearing up your lawn. Bigger is better to a point. So the question is at what point does bigger become a hindrance (cost, size, ruts, maneuverability, etc) and then step down a bit. Then for those specialized heavy one time only jobs, just rent. You make a good point and in general, I’d agree however there are those times when a specialized piece of equipment works much better than a “jack of all trades”. The construction machines like the mini-ex and the skid usually have much more power than tractors of equivalent size. Ultimately it comes down to money. Overall, I agree with the sentiment of having a general use machine and if you need a specialized one for a specialized job, you can always rent it unless you can justify buying a second machine. Having said that....there is nothing like the feel of using a construction machine because of the power. I’m currently using a Kubota R630 wheel loader with pallet fork as well as a grapple bucket and it runs rings around a utility tractor with a bucket!

@@jamesnm21 AB-SO-LOUTELY! There is NOTHING wrong with a utility tractor and a bucket, but the honest truth is that you really shouldn’t directly compare the dedicated machines to the tractors. The “true dirt machines” will outshine any tractor of comparable size, any day and twice on Sunday!

Quit buying those Deere Johns and you won’t have down time from things breaking or overheating. But us mechanics thank you for all the work on them! 💰 😂 ❤

Excavators can utilize pretty much any attachment a skid steer can utilize with the added benefit of a rotating cab, extended reach and digging capabilities. You can clear, grade, trench, move earth and more with the right machine with the right attachments and run a lower risk of getting stuck. Definitely my favorite farm rig.

Tractor can do all those things better than it can. The weight of the unit matters...skid steer just bounces off stuff.....

That mini excavator can have a 360 degree rotating grapple on it, which is good for moving rocks, you can put a jackhammer on it, you can put different kinds of buckets for cleaning ditches and trenching, it'll run a mulcher as you said, you can put a ripper on it to cut roots around stumps, and a small rake. It'll do a lot, even with just a bucket!

The are only as good as their operator. I’ve been running a hoe for 15 years now and I am still learning things. If you don’t have 1,000+ hours on one, you are probably going to have a hard time. Skid steers are much easier for beginners.

I have a 4720 and I do mow my lawn with it, I have a 17 foot batwing Woods finish mower. I’m mowing 7 to 8 acres and just love the tractor, the best thing about the cab that I found out is no bugs. The air conditioning and the heat is nice but I ran over a hornets nest and was really happy when they were all buzzing around the outside. It’s amazing how close you can get to trees.mailboxes ,swing sets and any obstacles once you get used to it. I have a New Holland TC33D and used to mow with it and a 6 foot finish mower and cut my mowing time down from about 8 to 9 hours to about 3 hours.

I would definitely go with the skid steer. We have an older new holland wheeled skid steer (biggest model at the time), and for our few acres it has been amazing. We are constantly using it for all sorts of things, even though we only have a bucket and forks. It works great for bringing a fork load of logs for firewood out of the woods or snow removal, and we have torn down buildings with it before. Making a dirt pad, moving pallets and scrap metal, moving trailers around, hauling rocks, digging holes, it can do it all. Only complaint is how it tears up the yard if you're not careful, and that it takes the block heater and starting fluid to get it going if it's under 50 degrees. (more of an old diesel problem than a skid steer problem). You do have to be careful with wet terrain because of the tires, so we tend to use our little open cab 50s case dozer for pulling logs out down by the creek if it gets very wet, but we have done plenty of wet and muddy work without getting stuck with the skid steer, just spinning and leaving ruts. The maneuverability is amazing, and I don't think we could ever go to a tractor after having a skid steer. My only wish is that we had a brush hog for it. We have rented a mini-excavator before, and it is extremely useful but it is more cost-effective to rent with as much as we actually need one. The neighbors clean our ditches for us with their full-size machine, so that eliminates much of the use.

Case skidsteers with the Cummins (1840, 1845C) are about the best simple and easiest starting skid steer. I don't think you'll beat the all around decency of one, for the money.

I personally from a outdoorsmen aspect I would choose the skid steer because I can use it to make my food-plots clear roads and still have good maneuverability in tight spots I realize it cost more but it would be a better chose in the long run for me

My thoughts as well. I'm for a construction background and the skid steer is one of if not the most versatile pieces of equipment you can own. Loading and unloading pallets, spreading material, digging holes and footings, brush cutting and the list goes on. For a one machine solution the skid steer would be my choice.

You are 100% correct. I bought a skid steer for 130 acres and the plan was to use it for 2 years, do everything I need with it and then sell and get a tractor. I quickly realized the skid steer can do everything and more just like you are saying. Most of my property is woods so I have have very little to bush hog which I can do with a brush cutter.

A 40+ h.p 4x4 tractor can do everything that skid steer can and then some, when it comes to bush hogging steep ground, skidding a log a long distance that u can't carry, and it can mow food plots etc,.

It's a horses for courses situation for me, and because we're on 100A of hilly ground that has trees, scrub, grassy paddocks, and I need to slash grass, haul gravel and rocks, cut roads and paths, drill holes, mix concrete in small batches and unload trucks my no. tool is a tracked Kubota Skidsteer. Having said that I have a compact tractor, a tough 4wd slasher, an out front mower and a 5T excavator, all necessary tools for looking after and developing our property, but given the diversity of work, safety of a track loader, small footprint and the power that makes it my number one choice. It's all context related though and if I was on a level piece of more refined land then maybe a tractor with a hydro gearbox would be my first choice....

I bought a 160 acre farm in Wisconsin 4 years ago with mixed open and forested land on gently hilly terrain. After much research we ended up getting a Kubota grand L6060 cab HSA and love it. Multiple reasonably priced attachments have allowed us to make miles of paths through the forests without a single flat tire. We also have a zero turn mower for the finished yards around the house (a few acres) and a utv that I attach a plow to for snow removal on our gravel roads. Someday would love to add a used mini excavator but the occasional rental has worked out fine for that so far!

That’s what I’m looking at for my 100 acres of forest that we’re looking to build on. Seems to have enough power to handle most of what I need to do. I know I’ll probably need a mini ex as well when I look to start building ponds and digging out foundations.

I’m so jealous of your ground! I live in NW Georgia and, while it’s beautiful with the mountains, there is so much rock. My farm sits on stranded limestone with little to no covering dirt. I have to work the fill in between the stone bands and try to get everything I can out of it. My property is about 58 acres with a 1/3 ERC scrub. I’ve found that my 35 hp compact tractor is just about perfect for almost everything I need to do

Great comparison. I got a jd 2210 a few years back as a mower with fun attachments. 5 years ago moved to a small farm and this tractor is the most used on the farm. I have larger tractors for field work but the 2210 gets used at least twice a week year round

I went through this recently. Ideally you want dedicated equipment for certain tasks. This means a skidsteer for loader work, a mini-ex for digging, a large utility tractor for mowing/plowing/seeding fields, and a zero turn for lawn care. HOWEVER this approach costs too much. Unless you're earning money, it's hard to justify, especially if it's going to sit idle a lot. Due to this, you have to compromise based on the work you plan on doing with it. Thus when on a budget, it's hard to beat a compact tractor. It can do it all, but slower. Unless you're doing work for someone else, getting it done slower is not a problem. Attachments do add up, but the total cost is still 2 times less than a single skidsteer or mini-ex. Also you can get 0% 84 month financing on a compact tractor, but will be paying ~3% 60 month of other equipment. I'd skip 'sub-compact' and go straight to compact. Instead of spending money on a 'belly mower,' keep your existing lawn mower. This is the best of both worlds and is affordable for many people: You get light weight lawn care equipment and a heavier tractor for other stuff. A 'sub-compact' tractor is great if you're in suburban area, but in the country, you want something bigger. I'd recommend looking at Kubota L series or John Deere 3 series+...I personally went with a L3301 with backhoe that will be delivered on Monday.

Oh yea ,ALL is true . The Kubota 3301 is a very good starting & all-around good size for 5-20acres. It can run up to 6' implements (Just nearly) as long as it is gear-drive. Your next jump would be 50-60 HP classes of a tractor. Happy safe Tractoring Sir.

I applied the same thought process when trying to pick a single compact tractor and decided on a 3046R. Big enough to do what I need, but small enough to maneuver around the farm, down narrow lanes, in and out of gated areas, etc. As much as I wanted to “justify” a 4-Series to myself, the larger footprint would have made it a lot harder to use the tractor for everything other than wide open space. Definitely enjoy your videos!

I am currently planning for my family's next property and found that the 3025d, was such a great "swiss army knife" for what my future needs will be! I am not super well versed with all of the different submodels of all the brands, but to have a tractor that can do it all (not too big or too small) your only limiting factor is time like the video said.. and to add, you'll need less time than the 10 series he had in the video but still all that capability! I am glad I found this video.

I've worked in the city as an operator and I grew up on a ranch, so I've seen a fairly good representation of what you're gonna run into as far as one machine for a decent little spread. I think that the most versatile piece is a mid size tractor with 4wd and a front loader bucket and a box scraper with rippers and top and tilt, if you can afford it. As far as most other projects, it's more cost effective to rent a machine than buy. At what point that changes is up to you and your discretion. You can put forks on a tractor, you can get just about any implement you need, ie a wood splitter, a flail mower, even generators if your tractor has the beans at the PTO. I think that about 55 to 65 HP at the PTO is just about optimum for most things. JMO but hope it helps, be safe 🤟🇺🇸👍

Totally agree. I maintain a 190 acre property with a 4052r. Heavy duty bucket, rock bucket, snow blade converted to a dozer blade, box blade, pallet forks, WoodMaxx PTO wood chipper, and then In the winter I throw a huge plow and a 74 inch PTO snowblower on and the amount of snow I can move is insane compared to a skid steer. Anything bigger than a 4 series tractor would become a hinderance on many common tasks.

Had a used Cat 416D 4wd on steep 10-acres. It was a bit tippy for hills, but had power to level roads and move mountains. Never regretted having too much power. 4-in-1 with leveler made short work of taming woods.

I love this because it’s completely application based and like he said, whichever projects you have will dictate which is better. Having ran all of them for hundreds of hours, I can honestly say it depends. Would I want a 1025 for land clearing? No! Would I want an ex for mowing? Course not! Each has its own specific realm it does well in. Personally, I’m partial to my CTLs cause that’s what I run most and if they can literally do it all with less footprint because of the tracks, but I’m not going to use it as a finish mower for my lawn. Let’s just all hope to be lucky enough one day to own all the equipment that he does.

The correct choice is the skid steer. Unlimited amount of attachments Easy to transport on the smallest trailer. Really it's a no-brainer

It isn’t the easiest to transport. Remember that 333g weighs over 11,000lbs which really determines your trailer size and load tie down

You need a tandem axel heavy duty trailer and a F-250 at least to pull a skidsteer around. And they can cost 3x the amount of a subcompact. Plus on a tractor you are out in the open, enjoying the nice day and not locked in a tiny cab. It REALLY depends on your situation, uses, interests, etc. Tractors are just fun!

It really depends on what you can move and what you have available. No one piece is the best, really your right cause if you're gonna have a 60 horse tractor you should have the ability to move a 333 around, might be at your limit but you can do it. So yeah I agree.

I agree. That one doesn’t do the very best at all things, but it will do most tasks good enough. Your goofing well thought, a skid, mini ex and small deer with a loader is a nice set up

I bought a used 1978 100hp Massy Ferguson backhoe. best all around machine for the price. I have no regrets and it has treated me better than I could have expected. If I had more money I would pick a skid steer. There are so many attachments its almost endless. But good luck with the landscaping. I got a big piece of raw land and I am doing the same as you. Hope to move my home there one day soon. But its so much work it seems endless. Great video.

Before I got mine, I spent several months researching and talking to a diverse range of other equipment owners specifically about any complaints they may have had with their purchase. I ended up with a JD 3032e. I have absolutely no complaints, for the applications that are specific to my acreage.

Very helpful in enabling me to decide which tractor I should upgrade to. The 4 series is my pick for all the reasons you mentioned. I also don’t have much need for a skid steer / mini excavator & will just rent them when the need arises. I still plan to get wheel spacers & heavy duty brush guard & will check your website when it’s time. Thanks very much for such a helpful video!

I agree with your verdict on the large compact for general use around most any property. Does nearly anything short of turning a place into a construction site. 50-60Hp PTO tractors will pull and bush hog anything. If you only could have one also make sure to have a bucket, but if you already have a sub-compact or 25-30Hp tractor with a bucket it'd probably be very economical to buy a nice used Pulling tractor for any PTO/ rear Implement work. There's NO such thing as TOO many tractors, just not enough space to park them all.

My property came with an old 50s Ford 650 I use to mow. So the first machine I bought was a mini ex. I use it a lot. Dig tree stumps. Move logs, rocks, dig foundations and trenches even used it to install my wood stove in my garage so I didn’t have to pick it up. I made sure to get one with a thumb. I am always operating that thing. Very handy machine. I think a mini ex and a good tractor with a loader is a pretty good match.

I've had a Kubota B7800, (Compact, 30hp, open station), best thing I've bought in my whole life! But, really liking the cab option for winter work, will be purchasing a L4760, heat/ac, more hp, and about twice as heavy, (better traction in snow).

I'm on 6 acres, 1/2 of it wooded, other half is grass on hill and paved driveway. The Kubota B2301 (23hp version of B2601) has been great. I mostly use it for trails in the woods and bucket work for mulch, gravel, etc... I have a riding lawn mower for lawn cutting.

Moving to Texas when I return and I will be getting a property with 16 acres and it seems like the tractor with attachments would be my best option as far as lawn maintenance but I would still want a mini excavator for future projects. I would choose a compact or a skid steer, both have good maneuverability and all the attachments you could hope for, im also planning on getting a mini excavator because of the uses they do have

After years of compromise or experience. Keep looking for good deals and buy what you need. It may take 3 to 5 years to assemble, yet you’ll be both productive and happy. Ended up with a cabbed 47hp heat&air 4 series, a cabbed 75hp heat&air skid steer and a 1.8ton mini excavator. No more worries, the jobs get done!

I bought the Kubota 3901 with Backhoe and thumb, so far it does everything I need and I can tow it easily with my Toyota Tundra.

I love my 4066R, we have around 290-300 acres spread over 4 farms. I use it to pull a 4 row planter to plant 7 acres of food plots, mow trails, move brush and dirt, lift deer blinds 8’ in the air, and most anything else I need. I really want one of those 10 ft batwings, it would come in handy. My dad has a Bobcat T630 to use on their property in MO and it’s pretty handy as well, but the best all around machine is the 4066R hands down. With bora wheel spacers of course ;).

I have a 35hp Branson tractor. I love it. I've got my property close to the way I want it but after talking to some friends one made a great point that's too late for me now. He said I should a bought a skid steer first to get my property all cleaned up. Once I was happy sell it and get a compact tractor.. nice grass, trails, fields. Compact tractor takes care all that better than skid steer.

Yeah I don't think so, skidsteer can run circles around a tractor if you have bolth woods and fields.

Skid steers are so much fun to operate and so powerful. Hard not to choose one over a tractor

Another great video. I have 3 acres so I bought a 1025. I love it. However I think I need a little more capacity, so am looking at a 2038. I have run into the limit of the loader with pallet forks several times already.

I have the 3025e and it's been unbelievable tough and reliable. About 800 hours of very hard work and it still impresses me every time I use it.

Every machine does have pluses and minuses. I have a JD 450 dozer, JD 450 track loader, Hitachi EX75 excavator, New Holland 2120 4x4 tractor with frame mounted backhoe, John Deere 4x4 310G backhoe and a Bobcat T300 skidsteer. Each machine has some task that it does better than any of the others. Ive purchased, used, then sold dozens of other machines that simply came up short. If I had to pick only one... It would probably be the tracked Bobcat. I am so thankful that Im not limited to one. My equipment makes my ranch life much more entertaining.

I have 5 acres about half wooded and a 1025r with front bucket and backhoe. (60in finish mower, 4ft brush hog) It does everything I need and more. I use a 1/2 acre capable Worx robot mower around the house where the "fancy" grass is. I got a fairly inexpensive set of clip on forks for the bucket and they really come in handy for moving things around.

We have a compact JD 3038e for our 400+ acre of mixed bush, field, and swamp. It's small enough to cut grass & evades low branches yet has the power to pull a 6' brush mower. A cab would have been nice in the winter but dressing up suffices good enough when snow blowing. Also have an older backhoe we picked up for larger jobs but when I really needed it, my lack of experience forced me to hire a contractor. Making it short, the JD 3038e was a great investment.

For me it’s my Compact Tractor. I have a Bobcat CT 5558 with a Cab. I rent CTLs and Mini Excavators when I need something specific, but they really tear the ground up.

As you said, it depends. We have a lot of clay here, so a compact track loader (Skidsteer) is what I chose. Keeps me out of trouble, and I can do everything I need to easily. I do have the neighbor plow and till my garden for me on his tractor, but I could use an attachment for that on the skiddy if I wanted.

The Skid-steer would be my pick. I value safety over pretty well everything and also the main problem I can see would be compacting a field that needs tilling. Since I'm not tilling any fields anytime soon, Skid me up.

It took me two years to decide on my first tractor. I went for the Kubota B26 TLB. It does everything I need done , just takes a little longer on a big job. I really had no need for a tractor on 3 acres , but it has made life nice.

I've had a JD 4300 for years, great machines, tons of utility. Tractors rut EVERYTHING up, and they suck on hills. If you have any sort of grade to work on, or a property with wet areas, a skid steer is almost a must to compliment your compact tractor.

Have a 1025r and 11 acres. Works for most of my needs. Granted something bigger would be nice on occasions but just can't justify it.

the m4-071 I'd would like to have plus good size if mowing lawns with the m4-071 be needing turff tires

A few months back I was commenting about using the skid steer more and parking the 1025r to put in the driveway. You defended the use of the 1025r. Once you use the Skid steer and the excavator to get the property the way you want it, sell both and keep the big Kubota to maintain what you have. You can't beat commercial machines for getting the work done initially. To maintain afterwords a big utility tractor should do the job but I would add something like a commercial zero turn for finish mowing a few acres per week during the summer.

As someone who loves skid loaders tractors are super versatile, they don’t do anything too well but do everything

I have 2.5 acres with a couple of houses. I need utility trenching and drainage, spreading a little gravel.. eventually a small capture pond. A subcompact would do it for me.. Great video. Thanks!!👍🏽💯

Early this year I bought a late 60s early 70s David Brown 4600 (46hp) 3cyl gas tractor for $4500. Runs drives, heavy duty front loader and rear blade. Absolutely love it for my 2.2 acres. Mainly use it to clean up trees and move them to where I’ll mill them. I need to make a pallet fork attachment or make my loader compatible for a skid steer quick attach.

My property was already ‘tamed’ at 11 acres but had plenty of oaks and pines spread out on a hilly terrain. I originally wanted a 3033R but couldn’t get it due to the Covid buying spree. So I bought a 2038R and I’m glad I bought it because it can maneuver better. I don’t mow with it nor do I have a backhoe attachment because of the prevalent sandstone everywhere. It’s all I need or want.

I got my 1025r because of you, because I got .66 acres. Yeah, I can do other small jobs, but a bigger job would be just as fun. As for the equipment, the work and acreage is the main deciding factor, especially in your case with trails. But nothings wrong with multiple pieces with a designated task. Skid steer with the heavier harder tasks like mulching, excavator for trenches and water edge cleanup, and a compact series tractor for mowing, tiling, and everything else.

I bougt a Kubota MX5400 for all the reasons you mentioned. I have a 40 acre farm in east Tennessee and it fits. Of course it can't compete with the bigger M series for brute farmwork, but it is like a swiss army knife with attachments. Favorite attachment is the root grapple!

I have used them all and love em all. I already picked the 4000 series JD tractor from the beginning of your vid. I totally agree Brother! All round usefulness. 🚜 Get'er Done!!!

My father has a mini ex and a skid steer and I have a small Yanmar tractor. The best way I can sum it up is to say that the mini and skid steer are perfect for developing raw land and doing big projects, and the tractor is best for property maintenance. It's nice to not tear up the ground every time you want to do a project, and the tractor is lighter and easier on the grass and soil.

I just purchased an implement from Good Works tractor. Exceptional customer service. They are great people to deal with I recommend them. . That been said…. Without a doubt I would choose a 1025r. It can do it all it’s compact affordable reliable. Yes sometimes it takes ab little longer than a bigger tractor but it gets it done no matter what. I can squeeze in small places. That’s my go to machine. I also have a 3 series. If I need more power I just rent it. I can’t afford an excavator or a skid steer….. they’re way too expensive for my budget. The implements are high too. So yes 1025r I have 8 acres and a mini farm. Hope this helps.

I went with a JD 4WD utility tractor with much taller wheels than the ones on your kabota. Great for the deep snow we get here in winter. I use it for almost everything with a wide selection of attachments for it. Very pleased with it. I also have a 4WD Kabota garden tractor for mowing the lawn. Now I want an excavator for doing some trail work (I have lots of hills and large rocks).

Which Deere did you get? I’m about to get a 5115M. I have 80 acres of mostly woods, but working on clearing pasture for cattle and sheep. My property is extremely rocky and hilly, and I have a mile long gravel driveway to maintain. Right now I have a Kubota L4330, doesn’t even have rear hydraulic remotes or a swappable loader attachment, doesn’t meet my needs at all so I need something new. I also want to cut hay in the future so I need a tractor that can run a disc mower/conditioner.

@@graysonwilliams4826 Deere 5205, bought it new in 2006, don't think they make it anymore. Got the optional taller full ag traction tires so it is basically unstoppable in snow or mud. Got a rear blade (clears my 1.4 mile driveway of snow in no time), front loader, post hole auger, spader, chipper as well. Use them all regularly.

40 years ago, I couldn't do it with just one. I ended up with a Ford TLB. When I hit 5 ton rocks I had to get a 12 ton shoveldozer. When it came time for landscaping I had to get a Ford farm tractor with an FEL and 3 ph. Good Luck, Rick

Hard to beat what you picked for just overall effectiveness. So many attachments for the front end loader as well as the third arm/quick hitch. Plus you're in an enclosed cab, out of the weather and insects, with ac & radio... Skidsteer with a forestry mulcher though.... so much fun.

Yes you can get back hoes for tractors, but in terms of use, if you do have a lot of projects, you will never beat a purpose built 360. So I would strongly recommend keeping the 360 or hiring one for those jobs. I would probably keep the kubota, or a tractor 80-100hp farm tractor. But the skid steer seems such a good peace of equipment to perhaps have instead, but it is against tradition, its a tempting. But I love tractors and probably go for the skid steer, 360 and 80-100 hp Farm tractor. But if I only had to have just one, for me it be the farm tractor with loader as you can drive it down the highway, cultivations and mowing, bailing, ect. But I live in a built up area in the UK and I have a farm vintage farm tractor in my garage

I’ve had a skid steer of every brand in every situation but flood waters and by far the most versatile machine

I love my Tym T454 - does everything I need, with cab AC & Heat to boot :)

I just bought a L3902 …an upgrade from my old L2501… I didn’t mind the manual trans of the 2501 but many many times I needed get in tight areas on a slope or incline and it’s too intricate clutch operation without hydrostat drive! Plus I wanted more Hp and with the additional upgrades of the 3902 vs 3901 it was a no brainer for my needs! Love the L series frame size , fits my needs well…I only have 2 acres but have other properties to take care of also. I don’t run fields or run my tractor for hours and hours so I typically won’t have to worry about over heating in the heat of summer!

Excellent choice- that's the 1 I would keep in your situation. My current ride is the 3005, only have 5 acres, tho. We live in a world of compromise, it could stand to be a bit smaller in the woods, & it could stand to be a bit larger when moving heavy large items. And, don't get me started on the antique manual transmission. Hydrostat would make everything so much better lol.....

If you ever check out an actual farm, you'll see they have Numerous tractors. Many even still use the little baby Sears model they got 50yrs ago to mow the lawn....

Haha, I had a gem of a 3005 a few years back that I wished I would have kept. I loved the sound of it every time I fired it up!

Currently in that situation.. my property, 91 acres, approx. 40 pasture and 50 woods. For me, I would choose a good utility/compact tractor. Tractor I chose for my situation - Kubota MX5400. Big enough to run a decent sized flex wing rotary cutter for pasture maintenance as well as future hay equipment and still able to work in the woods as well. I can not recommend a good root grapple enough if you are clearing trees and brush. It has saved me countless hours of back breaking work having to drag limbs, logs and brush to the wood pile or burn pile.

I have the same tractor as you. The Kubota MX5400 I bought it from in March of this year. Overall I’ve been very happy with its performance and size for the maneuverability. I just had the dealership add all three rear remotes. It can take so hydraulic top and tilt will be coming soon on mine. I also agree with you about the grapple. I have the land pride 1572 which is overkill. Reduces lift capacity. But is a tank. I could demo with that grapple lol

I know there's a back log on stuff but, I'm beginning to think the salesman at my dealership is giving me the run around. I need to just look online at some place like Messick's to see if I can get them on my own.

@@rogerr1296 I got them from the dealership where I bought my tractor here in Florida. I’m not loyal to any dealership or salesman. I used to be but my advice to you this day in age and in these times especially. Seek your parts and equipment from wherever you can get it. I actually started off really good with my salesman I bought the tractor from then slowly he’s been getting worse. So I just get attachments and products from other people and dealerships. Or the same dealership from a different salesmen. Loyalty will make you wait as you have been my friend. :)

@@JaseVaughn Sounds familiar. My salesman was good at first then little red flags stared popping up here and there. Like me asking him to order my rear remotes then getting the very distinct impression he didn't do it until I asked him about them a few weeks later. I just get the impression he was through helping me after his commission check cleared after I ordered a tractor and three implements from him. I think it's time to do a little shopping elsewhere. I hate it because the next closest dealership is about an hour away and, it's the same dealership just a different branch. And you know these guys talk to each other so, if I try to go through them word would get around and I'd bet my current salesman will tell them not to get in a rush to help me.

@@rogerr1296 I bought an implement in front of my old salesman with one that was there because he knew the stock better than him and when I called about box blades and what I was looking for. I looked at my salesman and said nothing personally but you said you didn’t have this box blade and evidently you do. I can’t let your lack of knowledge or effort get in the way of me getting my equipment and work done. Hahaha I feel the same as you about the salesman as well. Which is really dumb on there part because down the road I plan on getting a 65,000 dollar Kubota mini excavator. But won’t be using him!

6 acres on 300ft of a river, and I have the 1025. Attachments are bucket, 60in. cutting deck, forks, rotary cutter, back hoe, snowblower & rake. There are times when I could use bigger, but really it’s all we need.

Im loving the subcompacts with drive over decks,4wd, and a snowblade

I could not have a "one size fits all"🙁. With 8 acres of land and odd shapes/fencing/gates/ outbuildings/ narrow lanes, my 1026R is for maneuverability/mowing/flailing/ pallet forks/ leveling/scraping and other general use. The Polaris Ranger is a fast run-about on and off road utility. JCB 8014 is for lots of digging. They all had to fit my budget and indoors in my small barn😄. I think the answer for us all is - how big is your plot and what are your routine needs as you can always hire for one off projects.?

We owned an acreage for 19 years, the make of the tractor doesn’t matter(Kubota) The tractor itself was 21 hp, had a three point hitch mower,rotor tiller, and snowblower, that was the best purchase I made personally speaking

I would choose a skid steer but, as you mentioned it’s pretty expensive.. lots of attachments and tons power with speed. I have a 2320 which I love, I’ve got 34 acres and it’s perfect, my ground is pretty flat. You can also purchase a hoe ram for the mini and they work great. If you’re excavating and run into a big rock you can just chisel it out of the way with the hoe ram and go back to excavating. Great video!

I'd go with skid steer. Because you can basically do everything you can do with the compact and you can dig with it some too. Not much, but running pvc or cable, you can cut a small channel with the bucket. Clearing land, mulching, bush hogging, moving dirt. Skid steers are nice and it's all in one machine. I see why you like the compact too though

Agree. I've got 5 acres and been looking for a machine. Skid steer seems like the best bet currently. My one drawback is me knowing maintenance on it vs tractors-which I'm familiar with

I went with the 3033r with a backhoe I can do everything I need to and do some small side jobs to help cover the coast a track loader and a mini excavator would have been more efficient but just can’t justify the coast and the maintenance of two machines the tractor does everything well just not perfect it takes longer but on the plus side it’s more seat time on my machine

The JD 3033r is a very good starting point of a Rig. The "E" series is a bit of a "tinker-toy" conspired to the "R". A 25% more investment will yield a 250% better yield on longevity & reliability. Happy safe Tractoring Sir.

Every project is different and each machine has its own significant advantage. Such a hard choice unless your main projects are mostly the same kind of work. Then when you decide on the type, the size and features becomes a factor. I went with a mini excavator Bobcat 418, and a subcompact Massey Ferguson 1215. Both already well used when I got them. They have saved me so much time and work I am very happy to have them. I do use the mini ex the most, and the subcompact mostly for the box blade, and for its tow hitch.

Between the options presented the versatility can be quite similar between all the machines (especially when using adapters) - however, the ground speed between the different machines can be significant (especially if/when it can be fully used). That may not make much of a difference when working, but if you're having to drive from one side of the property to the other to work - or do a lot of transiting back and forth being able to go 50% (or more) faster while driving can make a difference. It can also be interesting to compare a tractor to a skid steer of similar weight/power as the differences in capability shrink quite a bit, which can highlight how much more skid steers are specialized for certain tasks - even though they are frequently (especially with larger sizes) used as general tool carriers. Of course when considering options, compact wheel loaders, compact telehandlers and the various hybrid machines (like Bobcat's Toolcats) can also be worth a look.... really depends on the needs of the situation.

When cleared and shaped my land I went with 17 ton Volvo excavator equipped with Encgon tilt rotator. A number of attachments as well.

As stated, it all depends on many factors. I really need two. A utility tractor (gear driven) and a skid steer. The tractor is a good all around machine and the skid steer is a good heavy lifter that is very maneuverable. So a tractor for open field work and a skid steer for tight woods work and heavy lifting.

For me I decided on a new 2015 Kubota HST 4x4 L2501 with a Kubota BH77 Backhoe. It has the skid steer attachment option, & hydraulics for grapple. We live in the Sierra Foothills where the gold rush began. We do not farm and have no fields. The HST is golden here and constant direction changes are needed. From road building / maintaining using my Gannon box scraper, replacing our leach field, moving earth, and general property care this tractor has been very worthwhile. I think gear drive would be fine for large field work but not for constant back and forth.

I pull weeds with my mini. For brush, for piles, loading logs branches rocks. All the heavy lifting. Leveling making roads pulling other stuck equipment. Wonderful logging tool. When I cut firewood no bending over and pushing on logs, no more chance of running chain in the ground. Oh yeah it will also dig holes and trenches.

I would chose the skid steer. It seems like it's the one machine that has no limits. I have the 1025r which for 2.5 acres is perfect but on larger property I would go skid steer all the way. Great video and love the channel, lot's of info you put out there that I'm sure helps a ton of people, me included.

Plus if you can rent attachments for the skidsteer to take care of certain projects for a day or a week and not have a monthly payment for 5 yrs on a separate attachment. But if you finance tractor/skidsteer with all the attachments you'll need for 5 years to do what you need to do then you can sell off what attachments you don't need as the projects get completed. Just pick up side jobs to help pay for equipment.

That blade on your mini ex is very good for making roads. Mini ex can push down trees, dig holes (basements) make trenches act as a crane. If I could buy one pice of eq it would be the mini ex. If I could get 2, I would add the skid steer. But I do more construction and I have a sawmill.

My "only have one " machine would be a Kubota M62(or the earlier M59 like I have). Powerful backhoe with thumb. Great loader capacity compared to a 4720( right at 4,000 lbs). Three sets of rear remotes. Backhoe comes off in 10 minutes. Drivers seat just spins around for backhoe work (can't stand the models where you get off the tractor and walk around to the back seat every time you use it). Only downside is the lack of cab. I prefer open cab, but many don't.

Love the M59 great machine 2000 hrs and going strong

Just thinking a 4720 with power reverser transmission would be a better choice for that many acres. I'm more of a gear transmission guy. Keep up the good informational videos.

And the winner is... to rent this stuff. I have a JD gator I use everyday but very few needs to have a tractor I would own so I rent or borrow. The mini-ex I have one in the back that the turn table broke off the tracks. This is proving so impossible to fix I think it will have to go to the junk yard. We are using it to put in french drains around the barn. I think the New England mixture of rocks and gravel in the soil got to it. One other item to consider is the JCB Telescopic Handler (the AG version). It has all the attachments you are showing in the video but can lift high for large hay barns. I notice in my travels many EU farmers really like those things. Cool video and interesting line up. Thanks!
