love the bit where you show Deschamps while making the point that the best individual players are not always the solution to a teams problems :D
Crazy that the guy you picked out as Moroccos weak link turned out to be arguably the best young player of the tournament 😅
Loved when he said Ounahi as a weaklink shows how much he has proven everyone's expectations wrong
I think you missed it with Serbia. We have a great front line and a good midfield and defence. But defence is where you could swap any player basically with either Nemanja Vidic or Branislav Ivanovic. Either would have a bigger influence on the team than Dzajic.

Definetely a few players I could see being good alternatives to your picks are Beckenbauer for Germany, Puyol for Spain, Van der Sar for Netherlands and the already mentioned Zanetti for Argentina. Zanetti in particular would be excellent as the archievement of a World Cup win would mean so much more if Maradona wouldn't have to step in order to help Messi win his WC. Also I think for team chemistry reasons alone Zanetti would be the more reasonable and sensible decision ahead of Maradona

Nope Beckenbauer would be a horrible pick for Germany. Yes our defence could be better but we lack a true striker since Klose retired in 2014 after world cup. All of our striking options either are too weak or don´t fit into the playstyle. The only other option to Gerd Müller would be Klose imho. If i had to pick a Defender for Germany i would probably go with Phillip Lahm since our wingbacks are much weaker as our fullbacks and Lahm can play both sides.

@@paha4209 yeah, i expected Klose, too. but Müller is a fair pick.
I think that Serbia has more issues defending than attacking, so for us addition of Nemanja Vidic or Branislav Ivanovic, during their peak at Man U/Chelsea, would bring more value than adding Dzajic.

For Canada, our center-back options are incredibly limited so I'd go with David Edgar who played in the Premier League for Newcastle and Burnley. Then again, if you want to go for another former big name we need then we could go for De Rosario to add more attacking midfield options to back up Osorio (though I think a prime Dero is better than Oso) since Wotherspoon just came back from an ACL tear and Kone played his first professional game less then a year ago.

I would have said R9 for Brazil. He was more of an out and out striker and deadly finisher compared to pele who was more of a creative forward, even tho he was a goal scoring machine. I feel like R9 would allow the flair players around him to boss the game more just with his presence and the ability of him to just power through defences

No doubt a prime Eusebio would be a massive upgrade to Portugal for this World Cup. But there's another hipothetical upgrade that would be as good or even better, and without bringing anyone in. That would be to rejuvenate Pepe and Cristiano 10 years, back to 2012 form, or even 5 years, back to 2017. That, I think would make Portugal nº1 favourites for Qatar 22.

Nah, Poland has AMC pretty much covered by Zielinski, who's in a great shape atm, but even if you insist on strengthening this position, I don't think that Boniek would be the 1st choice of the majority of Polish supporters, cause that would be Deyna, in my opinion. However, where we're really lacking in quality is CD, so if it was up to me, I'd call up Gorgon, who was the pillar of defence in 1974 when we got the bronze. Also, he had better hair than Boniek.

To be honest I was not really following last 5 years in Polish football but I though that our biggest weakness now is CB (ehkm, Glik), although to be honest Krychowiak is also way past his prime. But I don't have idea who was the best Polish defender at his prime. Bąk and Żewłakow where long lasting but did they even have a "prime". :D Edit: when you wrote "CD" I was thinking about "CDM" not "CB". :P My bad, I am to young to remember Gorgoń, but I there is not much to compete with, so he definitely would be an upgrade. :D
7:46, this is the kind of quality commentary that keeps bringing me back to Alfies videos, despite that I don’t really watch any football
For Brazil, I see your point but still think those full back positions need the most help. Have to boost that RB position esp with most likely Alberto or Cafu. Maicon and prime Dani are and upgrade to current options.
I look forward to every one of your videos, where I learn almost as much about football as I learn about puns. You crack me up every time
This was a great video Alfie! Billy Goncalves is an amazing historic pick for the U.S. (and is the pride of Massachusetts) although given what we saw from the U.S.--a great ability to create chances and little ability to finish them--I'd stick him up front. For a more recent center-forward I'd actually go for Taylor Twellman, who (despite being bizarrely snubbed for the 06 US squad) scored 98 goals in his first six MLS seasons before a career-ending concussion at just 29 years of age.

Cruyff (His national team record is pretty much just about the 1974 Fifa World Cup. All the other players in the top 6 at least won a something with their national teams. But 3-7 are pretty close in my opinion). 8. Ronaldo Nazario (He could have been in the mix with the other, but his problems with injuries, weight, fitness and his missing CL title means I can't put him higher than 8th.) 9. Lothar Matthaus (With the exception of Beckenbauer all the names in my top 8 are primarily offensive minded. As a Cameroonian, the beef you got with Eto'o feels so out of place. At a local level, he has done way too much to change football here in the country ever since he became president of the federation. And we Cameroonians back at home all love him. He's arguably the best thing that could have happened to us. Listening to your analysis, I wondered if we are talking about the same person. You say he's putting pressure on the team, any Cameroonian will tell you that his words instead rekindled a belief that was dying in the national team. Anyway, the outside world is always free to make their analysis. And millions on your channel will believe anything you say.
I was thinking of recommending this type of video for Alfie to make again following the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 editions but I guess it was already in the process of being created.

Never before were we in more desperate need of a man like Gerd Müller. Well done, this one.
For Canada, you should have mentioned Dwayne de Rosario and Alex Bunbury. Bunbury was a striker, so he probably doesn't make the squad. De Rosario was a winger, so it all depends on whether you want to play Davies as a wing back or a winger. De Rosario would be a huge upgrade on Tajon Buchanan though. While we are weak in midfield, de Guzman probably doesn't displace Eustaquio, and while prime De Guzman would replace 39 year old Atiba Hutchinson, he wouldn't replace a prime Hutchinson. You could also mention Craig Forrest, but I'd say he's probably on par with Milan Borjan.
For Wales you at must at least have considered Ryan Giggs and John Toshack, surely? For Portugal, replace Ronaldo with Ronaldo in his prime. For England, Duncan Edwards if he'd had the chance to reach his prime. For Germany, can't argue with Der Bomber. Nitpicking aside, the research that went into this is awe-inspiring.
Pelé wasn't a center forward, he was a second striker/atacking midfilder, a classic number 10, playing behind the number 9, that is his ideal position
Tim Howard for the USA. Maybe Brian McBride also. Both in their primes would be massive upgrades at GK and ST over what is currently there

I would say Clint Dempsey would be in the mix as well because of his versatility in a front line and clinical finishing when it matters most. Our defense is just horrendous as well (mostly talking about Aaron Long here) so guys like Marcelo Balboa, Carlos Bocanegra, Desmond Armstrong, and even Alexi Lalas would be a huge upgrade because all of them can do more in the build-out (maybe not Lalas) than any of out CBs outside of Tim Ream.

I think for Denmark, if you want to go with who would improve the squad most, and not just who's the best player who would be an upgrade, you'd have to go with Michael's younger brother Brian. As fast as Yusuf Poulsen and Martin Braithwaite, he had more technique and was a greater goal threat than the two. At least where they are played on the Denmark national team. While Michael could always improve a team, his contribution to this team would not be much greater than that of Eriksen or even youngster Damsgård, whereas Brian would make Denmarks breakaway game a lot more deadly and would give the side a lot more threat in deep behind the opponents backline. He also had an excellent passing and good crossing game, far better than the current two. So would be able to service the team better. Overall he would be the player, from the past, that improve the team the most. Imho ofc. Being Danish and football interested.
I would love to see you do a video of every wc1990 Ireland player and rate them to the 2002wc Irish squad

I'd still love to see a video about a potential team for a potential country - the East African Federation, which is set to be a confederation of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. None of these are particularly storied footballing nations but building a talented side should be doable - Saido Berahino is a pretty potent forward, Yoane Wissa has been alright for Brentford, Mbwana Samatta played well for Villa and is a starter at Genk, Victor Wanyama's still pretty reasonable despite going to the MLS Retirement Home for Ageing Midfielders. You could certainly make something *interesting* out of it. At least, that's my opinion.
Maybe it's just recency bias but I think Clint Dempsey has to be the pick for a USMNT, he would really provide ruthless finishing in the final third for a team that struggles can create plenty of great chances when organized but severely lacks in the finish department. Honorable mentions for me would be: Tim Howard for obvious reasons, as well as Marcelo Balboa, Carlos Bocanegra, Alexi Lalas, and Desmond Armstrong as help for that concerning back line both in defense and in the build out. Personally my favorite of the 4 would be Marcelo Balboa because of his ability to be lethal on set pieces.

First viewer I am and the legend for my beloved France is obviously Zinedine Zidane sir for sure as he would easily dictate our midfield as a leader and not exactly for Hugo Lloris boss, good friends!!!Regardless, his respective inclusions in all the respective FIFA World Cup teams are spotted on,good friends!!!:-D

David Villa would be a good addition to the Spain squad. His goal scoring and his playing style suits the Spanish team. Spain have missed a player like him since he retired

@@aplman7099 my point is, Villa had such a huge impact on Spain compared to Puskas, Puskas played 90% of his games for Hungary as he was Hungarian, he only played for Spain a couple times because at the time they were involved in bigger games as far as I know and it nearing his retirement. Puskas over Villa for a Spanish legend is literally psychotic to me.
Lmfao went in on Eto'o
Could you also do this with the champions league ko squads once the World Cup break is over
Also, I would shout-out José Luis Brown as a possible candidate for Argentina, looking at their defense

Why? Their defense is strong.
Very weird pick for Switzerland IMO. Seferovic isn't expected to be in the starting 11 so singling him out (again) as the weak link is already weird, and even if that was the case no other player then Alex Frei should even be considered in that position. Other (more recent) options would be Berahmi for Sow in midfield or most crucially Lichtensteiner at fullback seing as Switzerland are hugely lacking in that position.
25:00 Mané indeed has officially withdrawn from the WC 😔
Croatia team and you pick Yugoslav player? Šuker, Bokšić, Olić, Pršo, Eduardo, all great Croatian strikers you could have picked.
LOL, Spencer for Ecuador couldn't be more obvious. Greetings from Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Love the Hugo Sanchez shout!
For Uruguay I would bring back Alvaro Recoba who is my favorite Uruguayan player of all time. He only played in one World Cup which was the 2002 World Cup where Uruguay narrowly lost out in the group stage just like at this World Cup. Adding a 2002 Recoba to the current team could had got them out the group stage. For the Netherlands I would had picked a prime 2006 version of Edwin Van Der Saar because the goalkeeper position is the Netherlands' weakness and the would had stood a better chance of beating Argentina on penalties if he was in goal.

France, we would need a midfield engine like Zidane or Makélélé to compensate for Pogba or Kante not being here. Or, to replace Kimpembe, someone like Blanc, Desailly or Tresor

Zidane wasn't a midfield engine though. Also Vieira > Makelele.

@@daarom3472 maybe engine wasn't the right term, but his creativity and vision was what made France work during his time and without him, they seemed lost. And I do agree with Viera, but I think Makélélé would slide into Kanté's role nicely

This bringing back a legend thing draws attention to the fact that teams don't have players..there is a player drought and its serious..the future is highly dependant on MBappe for some of the football insanity that we used to have on the Ronaldo Nazario era..
England should bring back David James in Goal to give them an Excuse for Bottling the World Cup Tournament …. 👀. ⚽️

Love you Alf, know you always do your research well. However yes ksa lost horrible to Russia in opener, but beaten hard by Uruguay by a corner, then we beat Egypt. All in all not abismal mate for us.
For the US, I’d have probably picked Brian McBride, Brad Freidel, or a trio of defenders- Bocanegra, Marcelo Balboa, or Eddie Pope, I think all of those guys would improve the squad a lot.

Has there ever been a video on the Hungarian National Team?
I’m Aussie 🇦🇺 but for USA 🇺🇸 I’d pick Tim Howard. His prime is the game vs Belgium 🇧🇪 where he got the most saves in a World Cup match. More then Neuer, Casillas and Yashin. If you count 1 game as a prime then he’s my pick.
Given that the concept is to replace people with peak versions of former legends, I think an argument could be made for Portugal's best bet to be replacing Cristiano Ronaldo with... Cristiano Ronaldo. Throwing him in a time machine and putting like the 2015-ish version of him out there with the rest of the current squad would be an interesting option.
Roberto carlos or didi in this brazil team would be incredible

Way too many strikers\attackers being selected in this when most of the teams problems are in midfield. Someone needs to provide the opportunities for these selections to score!
For Belgium, Kompany is a good pick, Paul Van Himst would have been justified as well, but i feel like alot of players are overlooked here. Eric Gerets for example, who won the CL with PSV and was a regular for AC Milan for a while. Ludo Coeck who won the Europa League twice with Anderlecht and played for Inter Milan afterwards. Pfaff, goalkeeper of Bayern Munchen, most expensive goalkeeper during his time. Players such as Enzo Scifo, Luc Nilis, Preud'homme, Jan Ceulemans, Julien Cools etc... Deserve a mention as well. There's a few more, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Picked Gerets for Belgium at previous tournaments, but I think centre-back is a bigger issue now. Picking a goalkeeper would seem a bit mad to me given that Belgium have arguably the best 'keeper in the world right now!

@@HITCSevens You're right, i kinda misread the title. If we could bring back a legend for the current tournament, Kompany would be a great pick. There's a few honorable mentions at Centre-back, such as: Georges Grun: Won the Europa League with Parma, won the UEFA cup with Anderlecht and was part of the Belgian team that reached the WC semi-final in 1986. Philippe Albert: Won the UEFA supercup with KV Mechelen and played for both Fulham and Newcastle Utd afterwards. Walter Meeuws: Won a league title with Ajax, reached the final of the Europa League with Antwerp and was part of the Belgian team that reached the final of Euro 1980. Stéphane Demol: Won multiple league titles and played for clubs such as : FC Porto, Anderlecht, Bologna, Toulouse and Braga. Also part of the Belgian squad that reached the semi-final at WC 1986. And ofcourse Daniel Van Buyten and Thomas Vermaelen deserve a mention as well. Some great defenders, but you're right, Kompany is definitely the best choice.
Would have been interesting to see your opinion on Scotland if we qualified. Would probably be Law or Dalglish for me however Souness Bremmer or Hansen wouldn't have raised any eyebrows
