IF CHAINSAW WON'T START, WATCH THIS VIDEO!!

In this video I fix an old Craftsman (Poulan) chainsaw that was given to me. It didn't run so I took it apart and fixed it! Runs great now.

You were dead on. You inspired me to take another look at my old Poulan which hasn't run in about 10 years. Put some starting fluid in the carb and it fired, than noticed the fuel line disintegrating just like yours. This old Poulan looks just like your Craftsman. Went to Tractor Supply and got a fuel line kit as you mentioned. It's back running again. Good job dude.

Good job for a newbie! There is a preferred way of replacing fuel line without drilling the hole bigger. You cut (split) the end of the fuel line in half about an inch up. Cut one of the sides off and stick the other cut side in the hole and pull it through with a pair of needle nose pliers or a hemostat.

Good job, man, it's nice to see people keeping these old things alive! All it needs now is a carb adjustment: Lower Idle so the chain doesn't spin when you don't need it. More responsive throttle (low)

Holy crap people, what's wrong with some of you haters out there? This guy has *never* owned a chain saw before in his life. He gets one that doesn't even run, fixes it on the first try with great troubleshooting skills and is happy about it. That's awesome! I'm pretty sure he knows to not run it in sandals, it was probably him just testing it out after fixing it, relax people. Yes, the chain shouldn't be moving when it's idling, and even though many of you pointed this out, I didn't see anyone mention that it might be because the choke was still pulled when he was showing it, presumably because there was too much oil in the mix (others have explained this already) so the choke needed to stay on, and thus the idle was higher than normal and so the blade was still going. Good point about adjusting the fuel/air mix that someone pointed out. I grew up with one of these (purchased new) and just got rid of it about 10 years ago. It was a damn beast and cut everything I could throw at it. Nice fine man, and great job getting it running again! And the smoke, even though it's not normal, well, everything and everyone smoked back in the 70's. Cars, chainsaws, men, women, children....lol be safe with that thing. And if you are new to chainsaws in general please be careful careful careful. One kickback and you have taken a chunk out of your leg.... be safe!

Your chainsaw is from the 80's, everything was typically mixed at 32:1 because of what there was for oil technology back then. With modern 2-stroke oils, you can safely run the saw at 40:1 and not worry about it. I have a Poulan 2400 Woodmaster from the same era as yours and it runs perfectly at 40:1. Just make sure you run ETHANOL-FREE high test, especially in that saw. Tru-Fuel is perfect if you don't run a chainsaw constantly. It'll last a long time in storage especially if the cap is on tight. It doesn't matter what it is, garbage fuel ruins everything. If you think your little Craftsman/Poulan uses a lot of oil you should see my friends old Homelite C-5. The info label is still on his saw and it calls for straight SAE 30 to be mixed into gas. He can still safely run 40:1 even in that because modern oil is so much better. Especially high-end synthetic oil. :)

This is the same thing my small engine guy said. You mix the gas for a given engine according to the oil your using, not what the engine manufacturer. In a related aside, i had a friend who mix the gas in his sthil saws & trimmer with the used oil from his cummins diesel- and was very casual about getting the ratio right. His stuff was all old & running like a champ. Maybe it just dont matter as much as we think. IDK

@@ronfox5519 Oil technology is far superior today versus what my father and grandfather ran in their saws. It didn't have the additive package in it like modern synthetic oil does. Some of the really old chainsaws like my friends Homelite C5 was in an era where there wasn't any designated 2-stroke oils and it used regular motor oil from automobiles for its lubrication. So the engine didn't burn up during use it was required to mix the gas at 25:1 which is very rich. It's no different than comparing modern engine oil for automobiles to what cars used to run which was just straight dinosaur oil. It had to be thick to last for a good while before being changed. Now, depending on brand you can get 10,000 miles out of your oil before needing to change it. Where old oil was only capable of only getting you 2,000 miles before a changed was needed. A big difference. I like running AmsOil Saber in my Stihl MS251 at 40:1 versus the suggested 50:1 that Stihl says to run it at. It doesn't affect the saw much and I know it has a tad more oil in it so it won't get damaged while in use. The AmsOil Saber even says on the bottle that it has the capability to be ran at 90:1 and 100:1. But I don't trust going that lean with the mix. $13 for a bottle of AmsOil Saber is still cheaper than $400 for a new saw. :)

@@Slane583 thanks for the perspective. In your opinion, could some of the extra protection your getting with the 40:1, be gotten with 50:1, 60:1 oil mix & a slightly richer air/fuel mixture? A parallel question would be at a 90:1 mix, does the engine rev higer due to a better burn & therefore need to be richened up to keep it from burning up? Dont mean to pester, but it sounds like youve done some reasearch on this.

  • @Slane583

    @Slane583

@@ronfox5519 Running your power equipment at the stated 50:1 is usually your best and safest bet because that's what the manufacturer of the equipment has tested the saw or trimmer at for emissions purposes before shipping it to retailers. Running my saw at 40:1 is just a personal choice as I flip-flop between 40:1 when mixing my own gas and 50:1 when using pre-made containers of fuel as it's easy to get. As for your question about mixing the fuel to 60:1 & 90:1. Yes you can get similar protection as 50:1 IF you retune your carb for it so the saw/trimmer is getting more fuel and if the oil you're using says it supports such mixes. But the only oil I've seen on the market that states on the bottle that it's "safe" to run at mixes higher than 50:1 is the AmsOil Saber I run as personal choice. There might be others but that's the only one I've seen personally. Usually if you're wanting to run your equipment at mixes like 90:1 it's because you want to run LESS oil in your fuel so your saw/string trimmer runs cleaner and smokes less. So that again stems back to emissions. At the stock 50:1 a new chainsaw and string trimmer barely smokes anyway. It also gives you longer run time on pricier bottles of 2-stroke oil. But for me $13 is a small price to pay for keeping a $400 saw working properly. Especially when sawing wood on hot summer days you have the added oil so the saw doesn't over heat and burn itself out.

I then went to a 32-1 mix & it performed much better. When idling the chain Shouldn't be moving. So you may have to Adjust the Idle & Air ,(High Speed) needles. I like to mix my own OIL & FUEL. Also add some SEA FOAM to the fuel, as it Definitely helps the Carburetor stay Clean. Good Sawing, BROTHER.

Inherited this same model, same brittle gas line and rotted sponge filter. I brought a fragment of the gas line to the local chainsaw dealer, who knew exactly which chainsaw I had just from looking at the line. Replaced it and it ran, but not well. Sat for a year, took it out again the other day and scrubbed out the carburetor. Ran great for a bit, then stopped. I took it apart and realized I had left the rotten decomposing filter sponge inside it - the engine had turned the center of it into dust and sucked it in. Now I’ll have to clean it all out again, and hope. You were wise to have chucked it out before running it.

Most homeowners make a mix and goes bad as do all the 2-Stroke motors..Same with 4 -stroke lawnmowers, etc. It's all about bad fuel - "it was running great when I put it away!"

I went through the same evolution as this guy but I learned a few tricks along the way. #1- the parts (fuel line filter gas cap etc) are common with the poulan chainsaw. #2- the fuel line can be stretched with a needle nose pliers in order to go over the filter knob and attach to the small coupler fitted into the handle (drilling not necessary!) #3- beware the gas cap! After starting the saw up on a friday and running it, the following monday it was sputtering out gas from the small hole on top of it. This malfunction interrupts the flow and the saw won't start. Now I have to find that gas cap or I'm dead in the water!

With the newer fuel and modern oil a 32:1 two-cycle engine will work find @ 40:1 I had several 40:1 and only one 32:1 so rather than two different mixes I just decided to use 40:1 in everything, I did have to make a slight carburetor adjustment to the 32:1 engine but it worked fine. It still produces a fair amount of smoke and its still going after several years now. The difference between 32:1 and 40:1 with premium oil isn't enough to fool with. I have an almost NEW vintage Craftsman 18" chain saw with case that my brother just gave me and when he told me that it hasn't been started in 11 years I knew the fuel line was rotted, and it was (is), and I figure for almost sure so is the air filter. I've not worked on it yet but that's a project for another day.

@@mwv8408 That's true but older engine cylinders are made of a softer metal, sometimes even chrome plated. It's always better just to run a bit more oil in just in case.

That's very common to those. There's about 1' of fuel line & you'll need to clean & kit the carb. Bear in mind that a fuel line that long will take 15-20 cranks for fuel to get to the carb. Unless you start those once a month or so, you'll still crank it a lot. It's a Poulan XXV.

Oil burns hotter than gas, so be careful how much "extra" oil you add to "help" with lubrication....Big problem back in the 70s with the 2-stroke dirt bikes, people put too much oil in the mix and it caused the bikes to seize.

I agree with the other comments that the saw should idle a bit slower, so the chain does not move. Also that chain is to be used with a 'Self Sharpener' that clamps to the bar end. If you don't have that piece of equipment, then maybe replace the chain with a normal type, there are lots of different sizes, so consult your chainsaw shop technician first.

Wow I found this video and i just got the same saw. Someone threw it away. It was all seized up and wouldn’t pull. I soaked it in oil and got it moving again. Replaced the gas line and air filter just like your video. Mine were in the exact same shape. My problem now is the carb adjustment. Did you have to adjust it? If so can you tell me how you did it. I can’t seem to get it right. Won’t idle or won’t start at all. When I adjust it, it will just run away. Figured since you had the same saw you would probably know. Thanks. I hope you can respond to me.

If you can check the compression, above 65-70 psi might be worth $12 for an ebay carb, but if below 60 psi it needs rings, cylinder wall honing, not really worth all that.

These little saws are difficult to start , because they have to draw the fuel up the line, unlike the newer saws with primer bulbs. If the saw haven't run for awhile, remove the black plastic cover on the top , 2 screws. Put 1/2 a teaspoon of gas-oil mix into carb opening ,and start the saw , repeat until running . Also, these saws have a vent hole on the gas cap, make certain the hole is clear.

Always store your chainsaw empty . Run it to warm it up , dump the fuel out . Start it up and run it until it dies , then try to start it with choke until it will not run anymore . Ready to store .

I got this same exact chainsaw yesterday from my grandfather. He picked it up years back and said it runs. And it does. but the only thing that’s missing is the 14 inch bar. I can’t find one anywhere that looks like it and I was wondering if anyone knew. If you can’t tell this is my first chainsaw as a teen. Learned about these from my grandfather and was running these at 8.

Grat job. Chainsaws should have been built differently. They suck at running. They are cold natured. Then they get hot. Then they won't stay idle. The idle should be so low that the chain does not move. With brake off. But it is super hard to get them to run when they are that low on rpm. The cantankerousness is why people give them away, toss them. They get tired of cranking on that rope! Luckily this one was able to start up and run. Good job on bringing it back to life. Now you can give it to someone and never have to crank the darn thing again!

Didn't you notice? That damn chain was turning even when you pulled on the starter rope. Also, the saw had a fast idle indicating the carb is out of adjustment or there is an air leak. Sorry Jimmy. Your an idiot to think that saw was running good. It's a good thing you weren't fixing the saw for someone else.
