Idler wheel problem (solved)

W801 Magnavox Micromatic record player inside of a Magnavox Astro Sonic. For whatever reason the idler wheel won't stay in contact with the pulley. This is also the case when the turntable is in position. According to the manual, its the "Idler Arm Assembly" that's not keeping the wheel against the pulley. Am I missing a spring? Looking at the manual it doesn't appear that I am... Do I need to replace the idler wheel because its too worn? Any ideas?

Another helpful tip: once you resurface the outer edge of the idler wheel, treat the entire idler wheel with Rawn rubber cleaner and rejuvenator. After applying it with a qtip let it soak and penetrate the idler wheel for 15 minutes. This solvent works great on hard and stiff idler wheels! I swear by this product.

I had this exact same problem. I found that a spring under the idler wheel that creates the tension required for the wheel to engage and remain against the motor pulley was a bit loose. I replaced the spring to create more tension and problem solved.

The platter actually does provide the pressure and guidance for the idler to contact the motor pulley. The idler itself is dried out. You can try sanding it lightly with sandpaper, or have the idler wheel redone.

Yes, the platter rim and the motor's torque do help with maintaining tension, but you need the spring to pull the wheel in FIRST.

thanks Robert. I actually got it working! I came across another Magnavox at a different thriftshop and $8 walked out with a second stereo! I was able to part it out and get everything working! it ended up being the tension springs on the idler wheel!

Mine has a long spring that pulls the wheel to the motor, if you look from the top there is a hole that the spring goes between the two motor screws and the other end goes to the idler wheel right below the wheel if you take the c clip off and wheel you'll see where it goes.it will go right toward the motor, I should know because I have BSR turntable on a Realistic Clarinette 112.

Most likely the item that moves the idler wheel needs all the old grease cleaned out. Once it is cleaned and a little 3 in1 oil al with work again

I have a Zenith console of which the original turntable was removed and replaced with a BSR. In my case the platter spins but it is noisy in that it makes a grinding noise. Once the records play the music hides the grinding. I did the cleaning of all the linkages and areas of contact but I can’t determine where the noise is happening. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

I have a BSR table similar to yours but I have a spring on mine where you do not. In the picture of yours when you are measuring , you see a hole between the motor spindle and the stud with the E clip on it. On mine ,the spring attaches under the wheel and comes out under it to the hole. Maybe this could help. I hope this will be of some help to you.

I see your problem, if you look down at the idler wheel and the motor, you'll see two screws and between the two screws you'll see a hole and that is for your spring to your idler wheel.

there is a white plastic part that the idler assembly moves against, the spring i think you need to be concerned with is hard to see unless the changer is removed from the cabinet

Wow! Same issue. SO, nice people have been telling me that underneath the spring I need a new one and I need to super lube and clean! I went underneath and with my arm I moved the metal that is supposed to push for different settings the round disc with rubber- if you touch while underneath you can see what needs to be lubed:-) and apparently it’s that spring that needs to be changed ( for me at least)… it looks normal to me?

The voiceofmusic.com will refurbish your idler wheel. You can also try cleaning the edge of the idler wheel with a paper towel soaked in rubbing alcohol.

Your missing a spring that goes from the idler wheel to the small hole that's across from the idler wheel just make sure you adjust the tension in the spring not loose not to tight.
