    The motor shaft that you sanded will determine the speed since you filed the motor pulley the speed will always be slower no matter what you do to the idle wheel the speed will still be slower

    There is a small screw on the base of the brass motor spindle. Crack it loose and you can raise and lower it to adjust coarse speed. Ideally 33.33 when the pitch control is centeted allowing for freedom of adjustment in either speed.

    This my hit the disbelief button but it works. Remove the Idler wheel remove that parcel tape then put the whole wheel in near boiling water for about five minutes while the rubber is hot rub some wintergreen oil into the rubber this will soften it and make it feel like new. This works because the wintergreen replaces the plasticizer lost over time.

    @@03taru Sorry to disappoint but at seventy years plus I do find the technology rather difficult to get my head around these days so no video as yet but you never know. As an apprentice in the early 1960's I was given the job to repair turntables from Goldring to the lower end BSR and Garard and 78 speed wind up and electric gramophones. There are a lot of trade tricks to keep these turntables working and wintergreen for the idler pulley is just one.

    Hi your trick is nice, but you are saying something incorrect here... the diameter of the idler wheel, does not affect the turntable speed at all. The speed depends either on the motor spindle diameter or the platter diameter, no matter of the size of the idler wheel.

    Takis Z Hi there and thanks for the comments, but are you absolutely sure about the wheel speed? I used a stroboscopic disc and I'm pretty sure that the speed changed a little with the rubber on. If the diameter of the motor pulley change, the speed change, so why don't change the speed if the diameter of the idler wheel changes too? both spin, both have a direct relation... hmmmm!

    The idler surface contacts both the inside of the platter and the motor shaft, so changing its diameter will change the speed of the idler itself, but the speed of the platter will still be proportional to the ratio of the rim diameter and the motor shaft diameter. It was probably slow at first only because of slippage.

  • @pcno2832

    @pcno2832

    6 жыл бұрын

    I should add that there are some rare idler wheels with a different diameter for the surface that touches the motor shaft from the surface that touches the platter rim; changing either of these will change the speed of the platter. But with most conventional wheels that touch both, any change in the size of the wheel changes its ratio with respect to both, so the changes cancel each other out.

    Well, thanks for the deep information here. I'm going to double check everything related to the idler wheel, platter, motor and stroboscopic disc.

    The pulleys of DUAL turntables are usually slightly conical for speed adjustment. By adding the rubber band to the idler wheel you may have changed the point where it's touching the pulley and therefore changing the platter speed. Using sandpaper for cleaning the pulley can decrease its diameter which will slow down the platter speed.

    Hi. There is a C clip that holds the platter. You can see it around the spindle cylinder. Just take a flat screw driver and pull it out. If the clip isn't there, just grab the platter and move it up. Sometimes the platter can be stick to the cylinder so use a hammer and gently hit it and at the same time try to pull it up. Hi. The problem must be the "steuerpimpel" which is just a piece made of rubber. That piece is placed underneath of the base, close to the tonearm pivot. You can find tons of videos on KZread about how to clean the tonearm platform and how to put a new steuerpimpel in a Dual. Also check the service manual at vinylengine.com. Go to library and find the brand and model. It's free if you want to download that manual. Greetings from Ontario Canada.

    Hi. You're talking about the amplifier. In general the HS 31 came with a Dual 1015. You can get a shure cartridge/stylus for that one. There are many options for a 1015. EBay or Amazon are good sources. Keep in mind that the dual must have the cartridge sled for the cartridge otherwise it will be impossible to use it.

    Hello, I have two questions: 1. I have the same kind turntable (1010F), and I think something is also wrong with my idler wheel (I assume the rubber band just dried out, it's just super loud and even affects the speed). How do you get the platter off the table? The manual I found online says I get the platter off using a screwdriver remote a C-Ring (which I did), but somehow the platter can't still be removed. 2. My turntable somehow produces only mono sound (even though it should be stereo). I only get sound on the left channel of the DIN connector (although you can still hear sound on the right one, just in extremely low volume). Do you know by any chance what could be the problem? I tried checking the cable through a multi meter, and I assume the DIN cable is alright (although I'm not sure if I did it right).

    Update #2: Apparently the problem is not the idler wheel or anything else. My assumption that the rubber band just dried out was wrong, because there is no rubber band (the whole wheel is rubber and it feels alright). I started the table with the platter, so only the motor (without touching the idler wheel) was spinning. And it's making noises, I assume something is grinding in there. Now I don't really know how to fix that.

    @@BlueCubeSociety hi there! Duals are tanks but the problem with them is they've short temper! 1.in order to avoid annoying sounds from the platter the idler wheel must be soft. A dry wheel can produce constantly clacks. 2.in general for different reasons (temperature, humidity, current, etc), the cartridge can be damaged and that's one of the reasons you have sound just for one channel, so check it. 3.also check the metal plates that are connected with the sled cartridge. 3.switch the rca wires and check if the sound appears and disappears for the channel that is "damage". 4.related to the motor, you've to take it apart, clean and lube it. Isn't difficult but you've be patience. I think there are some videos in KZread about that. Greetings from Ontario Canada.

    @@03taru Thanks for that fast reply! 1. Regarding the idler wheel: I'm not sure how soft is good enough, but it still feels alright 2. Regarding the cartridge: Good to know, I'll check these things out in the next few days. In the worst case, I would have to get a replacement stylus/cartridge. According to the manual it comes with a sapphire stylus (and I assume it's still in there because that turntable was in my grandpas basement for probably decades), so it would be nice to upgrade to a diamond stylus no matter what 3. Regarding the RCA Wires: I'll also check that out in the next few days 4. Regarding the motor: I took it apart, cleaned it lightly (but haven't lubed it yet; any idea what kind of lube is ideal?). Tried it out, but it made obviously no difference. But I think the problem is really the motor (I started the turn table once without any motor, just to see if it's not a problem with the coil; I dunno, it was just an assumption, it sounds alright to me, but I'm not an expert lol). I'll let you know on my progress :) Greetings from Germany

    @@BlueCubeSociety hi. That's a common symptom with Duals when they are sitting doing nothing for years: oxidation. Use a soft sand paper (600/800 grit) and fix all the metal connections. I use engine oil for the moving parts with good results. And check if the motor spindle spins freely inside of the motor compartment. I guess your grandpa had a ceramic cartridge with a low quality stylus (perfect for normal records) but I know German press are very good. Try to find a shure or audio tehnica. I think those tts have medium/high mass tone arms. Hopefully you can fix that one soon. (I'm in a project with a 1015 but it's driving me crazy!). All the best!
