Identifying False Teachers: Romans

Who is a false teacher and what are their tactics? Discussing the tactics of false teachers along with how the Bible says we can identify them. This is not just something for leaders, it is something that all Christians are called to do. May we apply this passage with wisdom and faithfulness to the word of God.

    Hi Bethelshiloh. I don't think Mike is correct in this. He is promoting division. We may not have to get on with everybody, but we are commanded to love everybody, not avoid them. ONce again, a single piece of scripture is taken out of the context of the whole scripture. Remember what Jesus said about what matters and what the most important commandment is: Love the Lord your God with all your heart soul and strength, and love your neighbour as yourself. That doesn't leave a lot of room for separation!

His talk demonstrates serious misunderstandings and misrepresentations of what the Church teaches. If he was correct, then all Catholics would just go, "Yep, that's what we believe!" Why do Catholics get so frustrated with the standard criticisms from people like Mike? Because he is fundamentally wrong! It would be like being criticised by an atheist about Christian doctrine and saying, "No, no - that's not what we believe!" But Christians wouldn't dream of doing that; instead they would say, "Yes, like it or lump it, that is what we believe." No Catholic has every said to anyone like Mike that he is right. Even if those teachers come with messages of unity on divisive issues, if that message is not biblically based or if it is adding something to the Gospel that is not there or contradictory, then that teacher is false. Sola scriptura- it doesn't mean we only follow the Scripture and have no traditions, but it does mean that the Scripture is the final authority. Scripture is the final test. Friar Rodney Burnap Not sure what your point is here. It does happen, and it should be handled biblically. Usually false teachers are wrongly naming names because they’ve been called out for their own heretical doctrines and theology. The whole reason they have followers is because they are so good at twisting Scripture for their selfish purposes. And though some most likely know they preach a false gospel, many have sold the lies for so long that they’ve deceived themselves and believe they are right. So it happens all the time. The point is for the congregation (or the Church) to hold these people in leadership accountable to the truth of Scripture and the gospel of Christ by actually reading the Bible for themselves, not just the bits spoon-fed to them.

    Ephesians 5 "1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. 3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be NOT ye therefore partakers with them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have NO fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

    @@Airel17 > Mike was praised in general, for what he does for the Kingdom. And, as such, my reply to that was also in general, and not necessarily to anything he said in this particular video. > Mark 7 must be kept in context. And, that context is not about the dietary Laws; but rather, the Messiah was specifically addressing the man-made practice of the pharisee's which required people to preform a "song and dance" hand washing ritual before eating. This same story is repeated in Matthew - which clearly restates that the issue being spoken about is eating with unwashed hands. *_Matthew _**_15:20_**_ NKJV These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man."_* > No, Mike does NOT "stay on Scripture". As I've already indicated, like 99.9% of all pastors in Christendom, Mike teaches that it's okay to disregard the Sabbath, as well as the dietary Laws - which the Scriptures call EVIL, and an ABOMINATION, respectively.

In other words, at the last Supper, Jesus said "Do this in memory of me" he didn't say write this in memory of me but DO. This is what the church father's have been doing ever since. Doing. The Eucharist is what is being referred to, the handed down tradition which became a tradition before the new Testament was even written. Jesus said "DO"!

There are so many out there pointing fingers at emergent church, while, some are a bit out there, some still teach the Gospel and the Word of GOD, properly. Like you said, it has to be solid doctrine, or the essential doctrines, regardless of whether the preacher has a big house or not. His big house is none of our business, whether we agree or not. Calling out a preacher with a big house is being divisive. I am guilty of all those sins, and am learning good balance.

    Hi Murray. I am sure Mike is well meaning and a man of faith, but when it comes to his pronouncements about Catholics it beggars belief. He states things that are either not true, were changed hundreds of years ago or are of no relevance. As a Christian Catholic you have no idea how frustrating it is to hear the same mis-information coming from pastors who should know better. I live in Northern Ireland and have been afflicted with this all my life. No matter how often I say, I do not worship Mary it is of no consequence. It is insane!! There seems to be a spiritual wall that Satan has erected for some Protestants thst prevents them from seeing the hearts of men ad He does. I will stop now although my heart breaks.

    @@williammarran5068 Hi William. We do not worship Mary. The Church does not teach us to worship Mary. To do so is idolatry. Why, why, why will many non-Catholics accept this? One reason I believe is that if you accepted what Catholics said they ACTUALLY believed then you would have no choice but to accept the Catholic Church as the one established by Jesus. Why on earth would I come out of a God ordained fellowship of believers, blessed with all the riches of scripture, wisdom, sacraments and the unshakable centrality of our Lord Jesus Christ? @@williammarran5068 Hi William. Me again! Yes, that is correct, as a true Catholic I don't worship Mary. Any Catholic who does worship Mary or anything other that God is in error. Also, there are no official teachings (or unofficial!) of the Church that teach the worship of Mary. And why would there be? The Catholic Church is Jesus-centric and without Him and the worship of Him, none of the teachings of the Church would have any relevance or meaning. I am not a biblical scholar, but I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that the early Church taught the doctrine of the apostles. The first elders would have been taught and appointed by the Apostles and they in turn would have appointed new generations of bishops (elders) having passed on the gospel to them. Paul says to the Galatians in 1:8 "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse!" The only Gospel the Church is free to teach is the one given to it by Jesus through the apostles and passed to their spiritual offspring; and so it continues to this day unfettered by internal and external attacks and even grave internal sin and weakness. The Body of Christ is a human organism (and therefore fallen and full of sinners who sin) but established and sustained by the Spirit of God through all generations. The gates of hell cannot prevail against the Kingdom of God!

    Jean-Marc Pinaud absolutely a false teacher. Anyone who doesn’t readily confess that Jesus of Nazareth was the Word of God manifested/tabernacling in the flesh is antichrist. John exhorts is all to “test the spirits.” The spirit in a person is the source of the words and behavior, unfortunately false prophets are smooth like honey-like a seductive women. A liar and false teacher will eventually slip up and slide in damnable heresy. Are they preaching+practicing holiness and Righteousness? 1 John 3: “Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's[b] seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.” 1 John 4: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.” Another quick and easy test is as they say anything about the law being completely abolished. That by definition is “lawlessness.” If they had truly crucified the flesh, they’d know the Law is what convicted them to that death. We have to be crucified to the world and the world to us. Preaching about money, and comfort, and best life now is Satan’s way of cheating you out of the glory that comes through the shame and suffer on behalf of the truth!

  • @PapaJoeWalsh

    @PapaJoeWalsh

    @@kevinschaefer3945 Hi Kevin. Thanks for your questions. Before I answer them, can I ask what the purpose of your asking is? Are you interested in learning more of the spiritual benefits of being a Catholic? Or are you studying Catholicism as an academic? I will give you my personal understanding of both areas, although each of them is a very wide area in its own right, and to try to answer them in a few sentences will of course not do them justice. Q1. “Do you believe in needing a "priest's" "absolution" to be forgiven by God”. You are referring to the sacrament of reconciliation and, in my understanding, there are multiple aspects to this. Firstly, our sins are only dealt with by Jesus’ life death and resurrection. To be more precise, our sin is dealt with by His death as that is when the price was paid for our fallen, sinful nature. His resurrection is when He also overcame death itself. To be forgiven, we must be repentant and resolve to change our lives (metanoia) as best we can to avoid said sin. Now, Jesus gave the Church the authority in John 20:21-23 to forgive sins on His behalf. “Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so also I am sending you.” 22When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.” Now, I am not going to dispute anything Jesus said. He said it, so I believe it, and I wouldn't dream of getting into a dispute with you about the meaning of these verses as they are plain and true. So, what happens in the sacrament of reconciliation is that the Lord uses the ordained priest as a representative of the Church and of Him, and the priest proclaims the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness over the sinner. It is very, very clear to all that it is the Lord who deals with sin and provides forgiveness for us. But, I hope that one day you will experience the sense of freedom when someone else proclaims your freedom, if you like, in an official way. Sometimes when we ask the Lord directly for forgiveness, which of course we do, we don’t feel forgiven, even when we are. But when you hear it clearly and unambiguously proclaimed over you then you are in no doubt and the Holy Spirit confirms it in your spirit. Wonderful!! I won’t get into what I understand, as a lay man, about how the Lord also restores us to good relationship with Him, the person we may have hurt and the Church. Restored relationships is a critical element of dealing with our sin. Q2. “or praying to the saints.” I presume you mean do I believe in praying to the saints. We need to define what Catholics mean by praying to the saints. We do not worship or adore saints as that would be idolatry. If we did then we would say that’s what we do, but we don’t so we don’t. Neither do we pray to the saints in the same way we pray to God. Nor are we communing with the dead, which is prohibited by scripture, and rightly so as that is a practice from the kingdom of darkness, and an entirely occult practice. What we do is, because we have union with all the saints, living and dead (the communion of saints/the Body of Christ), then through the power of the Holy Spirit we can ask the saints to intercede on our behalf, in EXACTLY the same way you would ask your friend to pray for you. That does not mean we are expecting any saint to answer prayer, any more than you can rely on your friend to provide the answers to prayer - only the Lord can do that. I have to say, that personally I very rarely if ever ask a saint to pray for me, unless it is on the very odd occasion included in a church service. But as a Catholic, I am not obliged in any way to pray to the saints, I just understand that I can if I so choose. Apologies for the long answer Kevin, but as I said, these are big areas to cover in a few sentences. I hope my comments have helped in some small way. Best regards, Joe

    @@kevinschaefer3945 Hi Kevin. I was thinking about your questions over the weekend, especially about the sacrament of reconciliation. One additional thing which I think is relevant is how in the early Church Christians confessed their sins publicly. Clearly, sin is not a personal event, between only God and me. It is also a communal thing as it affects the Body at least as much as it affects me. The Church would never have tolerated people who said, "Well, my sin is a private matter between God and me." Anyone who took that approach would have been ejected from the Church community. I hope this helps a bit more. Best regards, Joe

Judaism rejects The Messiah and is why The Lord put that curse on Israel for their handing Jesus over to the Romans to be crucified. (See Matthew 27:25 for more information.) The nature of that curse can be found in Matthew 13:14-15, Mark 8:18, Romans 11:8 and at least 14 other Scripture cross-references. It's also why we have Jews and Messianic Jews today. That's similar to why the U.S. is referred to as "One nation under God" yet not everyone is saved. Romans 11:26 makes the comment that, "All Israel will be saved". That's in reference to ETHNIC Israel: The Lord will remember His Promise to Israel and tose who are still alive when the end arrives will accept The Messiah 100%.

God said to honor the Sabbath, then someone put a fence around that, then another fence to keep me from getting too close to the original, then another fence around that, until now an Orthodox Jew won’t even flip a light switch! We have so many fences now in churches that we can’t find the doctrine. Or...we are so loose that we no longer care about the doctrinal truths in scripture. I am, Mr. Walsh. I've been a Baptist for 24 years, and so that I'm not misunderstood, I have no ill will toward my Catholic brothers and sisters in Christ. I am, however, concerned about the apparent doctrinal abandonment under the last two Popes. Prodestants have always included Catholics as members of The Faith because The Gospel and it's Biblical doctrine united us in Christ. This is no longer the teaching the world is recieving from the Vatican. I am also aware that many Prodestant denominations have been attempting to blur the lines of Gospel-crucial scripture as well over the last 30 years. The Faith seems to be in the middle of a fight with itself right now. I'm just hoping our leaders remember what is important and stick to it through this so that we can remember how we are supposed to be a family in the first place. May I ask what you found misleading about Bro. Mike's message regarding Catholicism?

    @@marilissh Hi. I am delighted that you are a Christian Anna, and that you belong to a strong denomination like the Baptists. It is good to have the support and admonition of other members of the Body. I am also happy that you don’t have any ill will towards Catholics, nor do I against Protestants, regardless of denomination. It is interesting that you say there is doctrinal abandonment under the two last Popes. I’d be keen to hear you expand on this if possible. It is surprising though, as Popes don’t have the authority to change core Christian doctrine. The infallibility thing only applies in very rare circumstances, and even then, it will always have the input and support of the Catholic people and bishops. I agree entirely that the Lord unites us under Him as we receive the good news of the Gospel and begin to live in His Word. Again, very keen to hear how the teachings from the Vatican have changed. Regarding Mike’s video. I could go over the points of doctrine that I think he misrepresents or misunderstands. We clearly disagree for example about infant baptism and the role of the communion of saints in the life of the Church. If you don't mind I won't go over those points of disagreement again. My issue is not with the points of doctrine that we disagree about, it's more to do with how and why they are presented. I know this is difficult for most Protestants to understand, but when Catholics - at least committed, faith-filled Catholics - hear talks like this, it is a cause of deep frustration and hurt, because we hear exactly the same accusations and misunderstandings regurgitated over and over again, and to what end? Mike is speaking to his own congregation who have no control over what the Catholic Church teaches and therefore will never change it. It only serves to foster further division within the Body. Instead, if pastors were to teach their congregation to love their neighbours, to recognise fellow brothers and sisters within the Body of Christ and to love and serve them as such, our mission would take on a dramatic new lease of life. Unfortunately, some Protestants are in constant attack mode, while Catholics are in constant defence mode, over the same issues, year after year and decade after decade. Surely there is a better way under God? For full disclosure, My family and I are members of our local Catholic parish, Saint Michael’s, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. We are also members of Charis, a cross-community group of a few hundred who have members from a number of denominations, Catholic and Protestant. One of our approaches is to encourage each other to be the best disciples of Jesus regardless of what denomination we currently find ourselves in. We do not avoid difficult topics, they rarely come up, but when they do we deal with them honestly and with love. We are too busy loving and serving the Lord and His people (or trying to!), that we leave the doctrinal issues to the theologians and the respective church authorities who can actually deal with them. I suppose that’s my suggestion, that Christians get on with doing what we are called to do; do it together, under the power of the Holy Spirit and our differences tend to take their proper place. Sorry for the very long-winded response, but I find it difficult when I see or hear division being sown within the family of God rather than unity. Blessings on you and all those you love Anna!
