Ignore the commentary on back. I messed up 🤷‍♂️

The best tell tale sign for authenticity is the blue dots. That's how a silkscreen printing process was back then. Rounded corners? They easily rounded when kids placed them in there pockets back in the day. Paper stock is not gray all the way through on Bowman's. I have peeled back some and its off white.

I had it and sold it .I don't know what I was thinking. I got 400 for it 35 years ago..wow

PS...just pulled up a 101 Bowman Card online advertised as Reprint - yet has just the 1952 at bottom Back with the paragraph- does not have the reissue date on Back Left like the 1996 I saw - and was like new White Borders - not aged to mislead as original...and the one point hit me in the Face - the 253 was shown to have Face as Sunburn in some cases - this 101 aged that I received has flesh color Forehead and top of Nose but Cheeks and Neck very Red. Not sure, but I checked expensive cards closed on eBay and other internet sites and all the 101 cards show Flesh Color. I do not want to get a dealer in trouble if a legitimate dealer - but I think if someone is aging a card and selling for $40 that would be a $4 card - then this is a problem. The originals are selling even in worse than the Good Condition one I received for $1000 to $2500. I don't work for PSA or Beckett - but if there are a few dealers selling fake or Bootleg cards knowingly this could destroy the sports card industry. I will be careful - will check with another dealer first, and if he feels is a fake then I will request credit first before contacting the site of pay service

I have a 51 Mantle, authentic in every way it seems except there is no copyright. Nothing at all. Blue dots with a 30x loupe and blue/red dots at 60x. It's not a forgery, because the copyright would be there. I have found no similar reprint through periodic research. I believe I have a pre-print or a second print of the second half of the set soon after the original print. The second half had issues with the press which makes the 51 Bowman Mantle even more rare. I will be posting a video with the card based on this brilliantly helpful video. Thank you very much.

Great info! Just to add, the "Old Man" that came into the card shop in the 80's where I worked always told me to use a loop, look at the NY on his cap. The white letters will have black "dots" "pixels" that bleed over into the white letters on a real card. A fake one usually has pure white letters. Hey, easy on the 52' Berk Ross...those cards have perfect imperfections...lol

Awesome video loaded with great information! I would never buy a key raw card from eBay, too many scammers. I’m in the market for a 54 Bowman Mantle but I wouldn’t trust my judgement enough to buy it raw. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Really detailed video by Dave if you have the 1951 Bowman 253. I was looking for a video on the Bowman 101 Mickey Mantle 1952 to see if there are Bootleg - I'm sure a cheap one might raise Red Flags compared to same condition or worse ones selling for $600 to $2500 more...the one I have 101 has complexion Forehead and Nose flesh then Reddish Cheeks and Neck - Video of fake 253 shows more Reddish. 101 if off center with wider border on Right but not Whitish - if this is Boot is a card made to look aged - has one corner more perfect. Video shows or mentions Whitish areas as card if Grey through - so sort of some white edges on my 101. Also saw video on 253 about letters of Mickey Mantle at top and how aligned with letters below - but this 101 is a different card so not sure if that info would be same - as this 101 is not aligned as the 253 should be - is there a way to tell if the Bowman 101 1952 is a Bootleg - if so, this has to be nipped in the bud - I'm not a pro collector, but this could destroy the entire industry of Bootlegs are passing like originals as market will get diluted

Baseball should be red, on reprints it’s black.

You just gained a new subscriber. Impressive sharing of knowledge and much appreciated. From a printer’s perspective, you brought up some great points. I acquired a few Bowman cards from the 50’s through a local online auction a couple years ago. I just wanted something old. I began to question a few things about them, so I took them to work and used a good loupe. The printing dots were definitely from that era and stock was right. I’m not a collector, so to speak, but I have been adding some cards to the safe since then. So......guess that does make me a “collector”?

Great info! I also look at the seller's sales history. If they've sold others of the same card, one after another, it could be a red flag.

Great video, thanks for putting it together. I learned some details about this issue/card that I was not familiar with. Taking the time to research/learn about what you are considering buying is so important... I found this card for sale online and the seller says he found a cigar box full of cards in his uncle’s attic after he died, and he doesn’t have time to grade them. The photos are a bit blurry and the guy only has three feedback ratings, do you think it’s real? 🤦‍♂️

I agree with everything you said, and i think this was an excellent video and would give it 99.9 stars, but I'd like to add a small caveat if you'd allow me please... At about the 21:00 or 21:30 area you judge a card; clearly fake by other metrics easily identifiable, and continue on to matching print lines by comparing the red "mickey mantle" above to the black verbage below. This should never be a deciding factor... like ever. My argument here is this: First I'd like to add that I believe this technique may be good as a flag area but never ever ever should it disqualify a card solely by itself. 1. The red verbage was printed on a different plate than the black verbage underneath. The large presses this card was produced on would of had many, many, many meters of paper webbed through festoons, rollers, etc... and it's easy for a few thousand sheets to be off at the speeds they run before ever catching it. 2. As a former press operator (20 years in printing industry) a small left to right discrepancy would be hard to catch without a transparent copy to always compare positions. Running at around 1000 feet per minute these presses cannot keep registration worth crap, especially pre-digital age, pre-servos, pre-siemens registration technologies. 3. Which is why most cards during this era have centering issues, bleed thru, etc... you see, the image isnt applied all at once. 4-color process printing is the best printing method we currently have; minus a few novel approaches currently being used, which use the least amount of individual colors to produce a full-color digital image. All commercial printers to this day even use the process. But instead of seperate plates on an industrial press you have an ink cartridge with 4 seperate colors now... magenta, black, cyan, and yellow.

Hello again, this video played as I was commenting on the Griffey video, and glad it did! Good chance I won't be adding the Mantle to my 51 Bowman set any time soon, as I am only about a third of the way through the set, not to mention the price tag, though I once again appreciate your insight, and am sure many others will as well. It kills me that we must rely on third party graders to authenticate vintage cards, as you can't touch the card, am ponder what it was like opening a wax pack nearly 70 years ago, unless you break it out of the case. One of my best purchases was the same loop you own. Just like people who do not vote should not complain about elected officials, people who do not examine cards with a loop should not complain about the grades they receive from third party graders. I do only buy 51 Bowman which have been graded. It is interesting that a 56 Topps card with wax on back will earn a (ST) qualifier; however most 51 & 52 Bowman usually pass without the qualifier designation. Did the Bowman only have 1 or 2 cards in a pack, which explains it. I also find it interesting how PSA treats print lines on vintage cards. Personally, I like that a print flaw speaks to an imperfect time, and authenticity. I bought a 51 Bowman Johnny Sain with a print line and just love the card. Not perfectly centered, no wax on the back, but with a print line which adds has character. 1/1. Regards, Mike - base1956ball

I went to look at a '51 Mantle earlier today and used a loupe. I saw dots in the white of the name but everything else looked good. I can't find anything on the dots in the white of the name. Could you let me know if they are supposed to be there?

Yes that’s printed with white so yes Use a black light and compare it to known old card

Great video Dave! Although I don't see myself being in the market for a '51 Bowman Mantle, I may pick up a '51 Bowman Mays, and I'm sure these tips would help with that. Actually that's a card I would not buy a raw though!

Thanks for doing this video. It must be so hard to know for sure if a card like the Mickey Mantle is fake or authentic without proper training and the right tools. The Mickey Mantle I acquired from my dad is authentic but seems to have a little bit of a sunburnt face. Like you said, that doesnt mean it is a fake, but Im mentioning it to agree with you that there are a lot of variables to consider. Thanks for doing this informative video.

Hey man I have a bowman hank bauer, yogi berra and mickey mantle card. All three are together on the card There is a 1983 and a 1997 reprint and I cant tell if it's the reprint or the original 1953. I know it's not the 1997.

@@Bluejacket66 it does have huge white borders, but it is not bright white and it looks just like the original 1953 card on the back. I don't want to send it in to get it graded and then find out it was a reprint. I think it is the 1983 reprint, but I'm not sure. I don't have a black light or a Magnifying glass.

Sorry, but they let FAKE Jordan RC cards go by graded , so older cards i bet went through , also ? Fake auto's can also be added to the Grading problems & these were years ago !

I know you mean well but this is not how you identify fake cards. I am a artist and I can make any baseball card you want and have it perfect. You identify fakes by the printing ink and card stock and the way it is printed you are sending people down the wrong path because like I said I can make a perfect card with no printing mistakes but you would be able to tell its fake by the card stock and printing ink and how it was printed. I also can put fake cards in a PSA slab with a fake grading label you don't look for errors the counterfeiter does because if they are a talented artist like me there are no errors. I can make reproduction paintings do you actually think that I can't do a simple baseball card.

I guess you didn’t watch the video because I show the exact printing pattern to look for under magnification and clearly talk about the card stock.... and yes I think ( know) YOU couldn’t make a fake baseball card that I , and most people, couldn’t spit immediately
