OK.... Mean-Green armatures have green tips and either green or copper windings. The AFX (non Magna-Traction) chassis was introduced in 1971. Some cars had left over Tuff-Ones armatures (red tips + green windings), but most had one of the Mean-Green variants. The Dragster/Specialty chassis (4-gear) came out with a really high-torque blue tip armature with either green or copper windings. Given the gearing on that chassis, a stronger armature was necessary. The Magna-Traction chassis was introduced in 1975 (late '74?). These chassis came with what you're calling a Red Devil (red tip with either red or copper windings). This armature was used in both the standard 3-gear and 4-gear chassis. The really hot one out of these was the Quadra Lam that was installed in the Super-II chassis. Like you said, they came with black tips and copper windings. According to Aurora, it spun up to 68,000 RPMs. They call it the Quadra Lam because the wires are wound around 4 plates. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Additionally, the commutator is engraved differently. You need to look at this if someone is telling you that a car has a Quadra Lam. I've seen these armatures on E-bay for $85.00 and up. Be careful. I've gone on and on about armature tips and wiring colors. My experience: I've been screwing around with pancake motors since I was 12. I'm an AARP member now. I remember buying a Magna-Traction car in the late 70s. It was a #43 Road Runner, brand new, off-the-shelf from a department store in New Jersey. I got the car home, opened it up and found an armature with red tips....AND GREEN WIRES. I'm thinking they plugged a Tuff-Ones or early AFX armature in the chassis. I don't know. Either way, that car was FAST, and yes, I still have it 40 years later. Back in the late 70s, a hobby shop in one of the area malls were selling what I guess were the last of the old Tuff-Ones (by this time, G-Plus was the hot ticket). I bought a Cougar XR-7, an AMX, a Firebird, and a Camaro SS. These cars had the silver-plated Tuff-Ones chassis. The armatures were red-tipped with copper windings (!!). A couple of years ago, I bought an old Tuff-Ones chassis car through E-bay. The armature had green tips and red windings. Way-back-when (Jimmy Carter was President), I bought a Quadra-Lam armature and put it in a 3-gear Magna-Traction chassis. That car (a Chevelle Stocker) was super quick! Yes, I still have it! Had I known Quadra-Lam armatures would be worth what they are today, ..........oh well! Mean-Greens installed in a Magna-Traction chassis will make a fast car. I plugged a Mean-Green in a T-Jet chassis, with Tuff-Ones gearing, Super-II magnets, and AFX-rear wheels. It was a monster when using 18-20 volts. Blue-tip armatures coupled with Super-II magnets are even quicker. I discovered that with a '57 Nomad. Still having fun!!

I started in 69,I bought and sold probably 300 cars but I have a triple deck tackle box full of cars and parts.Tyco,Afx,Riggen,Tomy,4 super2s,Tjets,Lifelike ect.I've probably ruined 50 cars experimenting on gearing, rewinding, body lightening ect.The end result is I have 48 magnatraction cars that are extremely fast. They accelerate like Gplus cars but have more top end.The gold wire green tip motor is fast as is the green green. The green wire blue tip motor is fast but is a torque monster and lacks top end compared to mean greens. The stock red on red motor can be made faster but doesnt have the top end either. The quadralams have it all, quick and very fast on the top too.I have 7 quads 5 gold black and 2 green and black. The green black quads aren't from Super2s.They wont work with magnatraction gear plates unless modified but work in Tjets very well.Sorry about the rambling just an old enthusiast with young enthusiasm.

I find some inconsistencies with this guide. To my knowledge the tjet arms are correct, Wild ones came with later tjet red, green or copper on grey arms close to 15 ohms. Tuff ones had lower 6 ohm green on grey (like speed wind) or green on red arms. Early AFX non mag had tuff ones arms, red devils, or mean greens green or copper on green tip. Magnatractions had copper on red 15 ohm arms but there are also some copper on red 6 ohm arms. These could be late tuff ones or Afx n.m.
