    How many years can you use the the same ground?

  • @insideagriculture2971

    @insideagriculture2971

    Жыл бұрын

    In irrigated cropping systems, we use the same ground every year, but we rotate crops. A normal rotation in this area is potatoes followed by 2-3 years of small grains (barley or wheat). Some growers also have alfalfa in their rotation for 4-6 years.

    How do those massive circular waterers spread evenly? Or do they not?

    They are called pivots and each span has a different size of nozzle for each sprinkler. The outermost sprinklers put down much more water than the innermost towers. Since the towers move faster as they get further from the center, it is very uniform across the whole field.

    @Inside Agriculture Yeah. There are many center-pivot irrigation farms throughout western Kansas and Nebraska as well, they're where the land is flat. You can always spot those circles up from a plane. And as you already know of course, there are many of them throughout south-eastern Idaho where most of the state's potatoes are grown

    A recent water use efficiency study revealed how different treatments affected water use efficiency during the growing season of a potato crop. The research results showed the superiority of SWRT subsurface membranes that reached 3.46kg m-3 compared to plant fertilizer, animal manure and comparison treatments that gave efficiency of 2.96, 2.66 and 2.34 kg m-3 respectively. The reason for the superiority of the SWRT treatment is attributed to the membranes that maintain optimum moisture content close to field capacity in the root zone and the consumption of water is minimal and yet produces a high yield.

    I buy potatoes at the grocery store, some of your potatoes. But the recent commercial I saw on tv about Idaho potatoes, was shameful! Running down home gardeners because they choose to grow their own potatoes, that was downright mean and insulting!
