I've been trying to design an rpg like D&D for kids for a few months now. Haven't been able to trim things down to a more digestible scale for kids. Then I remembered this video and how you structured ICRPG. "Losing resolution" was EXACTLY what I have been chasing. I'm going to marry some of these concepts into what I already have. See if they jive well. Thank you for having such an efficient mind Hank. You made combat more fun for me to run as a DM (I hate combat.) With all your D&D content from your Drunken days I've been able to enjoy D&D more from both sides of the table. And now to be able to call upon an almost 3 year old memory of you uploading this to help with my unrelated rpg woes? Just a happy day is all. Cheers bud

Like the Common Sheild gives you an armor boost (standard stuff), but you can also sacrifice the shield to absorb half of the damage of one attack against you... That's so friggin cool. Like it's a super simple effect but it puts a cool story image in your head. "A knight on his last leg interposes his trusty shield between himself and a troll. The troll slams down on it with his club, shattering it into pieces."

There are so many great ideas and concepts in ICRPG. Even if you don't run the system, lots of great ideas to crib and use in other games. I love the timers and the death mechanic. I would totally use that instead of the endless death mini-game in 5th edition, or other systems as well. I plan to use it in my Castles and Crusades game. It adds tension and pressure and urgency to save a fallen comrade. Love it to death ( sic) !

( 21:06 ) I came up with a similar dying mechanic a while ago that I use in my games. It works like this: 1. I use 2d4 instead of a d6 2. I roll the dice behind the GM screen and don't tell the players what I rolled 3. I don't tell the players if/when the characters died, they have to go to the body in game to see for themselves whether or not they can save their friend or if it's too late (doesn't cost an action to see, they just have to be next to the body) 4. Everytime a character gets up from from dying they aquire 1 wound 5. When I roll the 2d4 I take the amount of wounds a character has from what I rolled. This means that if a character has fallen twice, they enter a "danger zone" when I could roll a number equal to or less than the amount of wounds they already have and if that happens then the character dies immediately, no saves 6. If a character dies immediately on the 2d4 then as the GM I can choose how the character dies, be it quietly so the players still have to check on the body to see that they are already too late or make it more dramatic like the charcter is strait beheaded by the enemy, so long as it makes sence in the moment 7. A days bed rest will cure 1 wound As you can imagine, this makes death fairly rare but very intence at the table when it does happen. It makes for some great memories though

Beautiful!!! I do the stat thing too! I’ve reworked a lot of DND to do exactly what you are aiming for. Adding and subtracting smaller numbers. I submit this for you and your community to consider. I don’t like the many many hits it takes to knock down a 5e enemy, and none of those hits have consequences until the last one. I propose that each heart you lose comes with a severe handy cap. This means that you can’t yawn through the first ten rounds of combat, because you have so many HP’s that the enemy can’t drop you in ten rounds. I would like to see the tension and terror as players find their characters beaten to the point they can hardly defend themselves. It would also be great if a goblin surrendered because you broke his arm, instead of fighting to the death every time.

But this is the juice man, these kinds of videos are why I've stayed subbed. What you're saying about using natural language is really great, a bit of a call back to your first or second DW videos. Also, I didn't know your room DC was for everything, including attack rolls (I thought it was just ability checks), that shit's crazy. Gracias por la oportunidad de ganar. Hey Hankerin! Big fan! I was wondering if you plan on doing a video on how Items and Milestones work in ICRPG. Though the mechanics talked about here make great strides in simplifying and making the moment to moment gameplay much more fun and satisfying, I believe the biggest difference between something like 5th edition is how progression works. To me, I view it like the sword vs. the hand that wields it. ICRPG progression is about the sword, D&D is about the hand. The absence of Skills also kind of reflects that I think. I'd love to get your thoughts and get into your headspace when it comes to why you decided to handle it that way. Also, just wanted to say that the fluidity of this system and the ease of hacking it has inspired me to work on a ruleset to run a West Marches style game using ICRPG! Thank you!

Hi Hank, a few things we did to add just a little more detail were to add the distance very Far which denotes double far I guess, and the concept of very easy (-6 from target) and very hard (+6 to target). Overall the game is very flexible and lends itself quite nicely to house modding. One thing i started to do in order to keep track of all the mod rules we add in certain situations, is to use what Mythic does for its questions format. Basically i have cards with the mod rules on them So for example, one of my players has that one item that allows multiple ranged attacks if the roll is > 13, so they have to keep track of all the arrows they shoot. Sometimes they pop off as much as 10 in a row. After the battle is done, I have them make an INT check, if they succeed, then I have them roll a dice (the size of the number of arrows to recover) and that indicates the number of arrows they recover. If they fail their INT check then no luck. Another cool thing I like to do is vary the target while in the same room to indicate an area of particular difficulty, for example when traversing a section of the room thats underwater, etc

Why would you need an INT check to recover arrows? Seems more about perception and luck..

Peter Koperdan I could see perception as well. I used INT, because it would take skill in my opinion to remove an arrow embedded in a dead carcass without breaking it

Skill yes, but not INT. Even a person of low intellect could learn it with practice. It's not brain surgery after all. I can totally imagine a 'dumb' barbarian being super skilled at it. Then luck would determine whether an arrow is retrievable at all (without a demanding operation). If arrow is really stuck, bad luck, you can't retrieve it. Because even if a brain surgeon could take it out, what brain surgeon would really waste time on that? If you wanted to be super pedantic, you could roll perception or other search skill to determine how many arrows the character finds. Then you could roll luck to see how many of those arrows are retrievable. Then you could roll a skill (or INT) check for each arrow to see which arrows are retrieved. But why bother with such complexity? One clever roll should suffice. D&D is not a computer game. The whole point of ICRPG is to streamline gameplay. There are plenty of other complicated systems available. That said, you are free to do as you wish.. One tip about the arrows, The Black Hack has a great mechanic - Usage die. "Any item listed in the equipment section that has a Usage die is considered a consumable, limited item. When that item is used the next Minute (turn) its Usage die is rolled. If the roll is 1-2 then the usage die is downgraded to the next lower die in the following chain: d20 > d12 > d10 > d8 > d6 > d4 When you roll a 1-2 on a d4 the item is expended and the character has no more of it left."

Peter Koperdan I actually like the usage die idea. Clean, and easy mechanic. Thanks!

Having 01 HP instead of a heart seems obvious, but I never thought to use it in my games. Thank you for that tip. Had a character die being dragged underwater and pulled away by a [Carrion Crab]. Timer was 1 for drowning, and death roll was 1. Here's a picture one of my players drew: i.imgur.com/2T21wjh.png

One thing with effort, can you mix effort (I am sure you can)? So jumping a 2 heart chasm, I apply intelligence effort and strength effort. Find the best way to jump across and then physically do it.

Yeah generally effort is best left for situations that can be partially done. Jumping across a cliff for instance is simply a pass/fail usually. But you can handle things like picking a lock, bashing down a door, hacking a computer system, or similar things with effort. The idea though is generally there should be something else happening in the scene alongside the checks. Monsters coming up as the PCs desperately try to open a locked or stuck door is the most obvious scenario here, but you can find a lot of other similar situations here in other scenarios like trying to fix your hyperdrive before the enemy capital ship gets into range while fending off enemy fighters.

I've been playing D&D since "Holmes" Basic D&D (1979) into AD&D through 5e. I did purchase a copy of ICRPG but it just seems more like board game mechanics rather than the mechanics I grew up playing. But to each their own and more power to you.

My core book arrived back on Sunday, ended up buying the Worlds PDF the next day. Excited to run Ghost Mountain, but I have a question. I have not found anything about a cover mechanic in either book (or perhaps I missed it). How do you usually run it? I was thinking if making a ranged attack, it just makes the target or player AC a hard attempt (then having cover diminish a bit, such as a barrel getting destroyed by a shotgun blast). Additionally, what product would I be looking for if I wanted cutouts for buildings and such?
