Instead of Spending $350 on a patch bay You should have Hire a Landscaper to Clean up Your Back Yard. You should have never shown that in the video Or maybe Invest in Curtains or something. Or maybe Spend less time tidy up the Studio and Work in the Back Yard...

@@iConnectivitySupport I just got the mio10 for my birthday and the preset configuration is lost tried everything. Videos, contacting the company etc... I cannot restore my routing or configuration. If iConnectivity can revamp its iconfig software and incorporate it in auracle instead of separate programs, auracle can restore iconfig to factory default. I have wasted time to restore this without assistance and I've got a show to do with this. You must do a step by step instructions video for just restoring the main mio10 settings or find in iconfig the routing settings rest default settings. Seriously myself and others who bought the mio10 or other products from iconnectiviy. I'm not getting results nothing is or has worked to resolve my issue. Please answer the phone's and verbally tell all your customers what to do in this situation. It's an awesome unit but the settings and restore and iconfig portion is a considerable waste of time if you're a novice or pro with it. Please review, revise the mio10 manual and get a step by step video out. Put it on a video DVD and KZread and write this in the new users/owner manual.... Superb tutorial/review, very well done, and I especially like the VNV Nation screensaver haha... my Mio10 is arriving tomorrow, to a mixture of excited anticipation and dread, because like you I have a bunch of old and new devices that require many different flavours of MIDI channel and functionality, and as much as I am looking forward to hooking it all up, I have a feeling I'll be obsessively switching configurations and parameters for weeks to get into a comfortable preset in the Mio software. As a nineties MIDI operator like yourself, I cannot imagine such a device existing back then, both in terms of how happier I would have been not wasting so much time with dodgy 5-pin cabling and tiresome pages of LCD menu settings, and also how it would have changed the entire music industry if people like Jean Michel-Jarre and Martin Hannett and Trevor Horn had such a wonderous piece of hardware. I'll try to keep in touch with regard to my own successes and failures - great to see iConnectivity Support being so eager to ensure their products are working well, so unlike a lot of companies I shan't name who don't even bother updating firmware for their expensive legacy interface devices (*cough* M-Audio *cough*) Anyway brilliant video, many thanks for your time & effort to make this!! :)

Thanks so much for this. I'm pretty much sold after watching. 👍 I've been looking for something like this but haven't wanted to pay the money for the motu. In my scenario I've currently got all my hardware hooked up to my MPC but that makes it a pain to integrate the computer usefully so I have to choose between the two ways of working. I'm hoping I'll be able to set this up with a couple of configs so I can switch between a preset that routes everything from the mpc to the hardware as it currently works but also allows me to use the computer & ipads as additional instruments and then another to allow me two way communication to all my synths and drum machines from the DAW without having to spend half an hour re-cabling.

thank you!!! excellent review. I wish i had looked this up sooner:) spent a few hours learning from the manual ( this can be better written especially giving more examples of in the midi routing page with respect to midi modules, vs synths vs midi controllers as well as in the midi filtering page. Also listing the din jacks separately on two usb for computer connection as well as separately was also a bit confusing, especially for novices. Illustrating each concepts with examples would greatly help in improving the manual. you did a very good job in explaining things. the way i got around the usb hosts midi channel was to directly program the synths to receive midi on 1 channel from the daw. On my korg kronos i left to receive on all channels for sequencer to play in 16 channels is needed. My moog one, subsequent 37, deepmind and Model D receive on predetermined channels set on the synths.

Good video. Coupla things. Your master template, (20:43) seems to have two ports named for each USB controller, but Max Ports per USB Device is still set to one. Also, when naming devices, I find it less confusing if I include both the Mio-10 port type and number, AND the name I wish to assign to it. Example, a DX-7 on DIN port 3 gets the name "D3 DX7." An Akai MPK-261 on USB port 2 gets the name "U2 MPK 261." This is especially useful when inside a given PC or DAW. A string of 16 devicenames only, makes it hard to know which LEDs on the front panel should or should not be lit at any given time, and missing assignments by one port then LOOK pretty much ok, delaying successful troubleshooting. These problems go away when the devicename includes both the port number and device type, as described above.

Thank you for this review, it's really good. With your video you've answered a lot of questions I had about the mio10. I'm still not sure what to think about the user interface when it comes to the midi port routing, especially when I want to cascade two mio10 devices together. Additionally to the missing hardware panic button, the USB ports are not ground lifted, from what I've read. However, I guess I will give the mio10 a try...

Fab review thank you. My question is based around further expansion. I have an old Edirol UM880 which stopped working properly with my Macbook when El Capitan came out hence buying the MIO10. The UM880 is a class compliant device so I wondered if it should work with a hook up from the (standard flat) USB port on the back of the MIO into the (square) USB B in on the UM880. I'm guessing I should then set the maximum number of ports to 8 in the software to be able to "see" the 8x8 ports for routing?

Great and very usefull review, thx Bro! But one more and maybe a noob question: For example your arturia is connected through a USB hub and this usb hub is connected to the "usb port type A" on the Mio10, right? So this way it recognizes the keystations automaticaly? Will this do as well with the Nov-Peak, Rol. Tr8-S and to all USB connectable devices that i hook up to the same usb hub that is connected to the Mio10? I'm using a FocusRite Scarlett 18i20 that is hooked up on my Intel Core i7-8700K 5.2 Ghz with Ableton live 10 and also connected by the DIN to the MIO-10. My MIO-10 detects a "FocusRite AE Peak(Port 1)" only, So i realy don't understand. Because i use a TP-Link powerd 7ports usb hub(3.0-2.0 usb supported) and its straight connected to the MIO-10 and on my USB hub is the Novation Peak and a Roland Tr8-s but it isn't shown in the MIO-10, just a "FocusRite AE Peak(Port 1)" I don't understand why its not in the list. Maybe you know why not, or anybody knows why? Thx

Hey there great review on the mio10! My quick questions. 1) I have a few midi synth modules that I want just pull sounds into my DAW for, so can I just use a single midi cable on my DIN ports? 2) for the USB hub can it handle a midi controller keyboard as long as it is class compliant? 3) Do you have a video on working with virtual synth connections (I’d like to use my Native Instruments Komplete library in this chain as well)? Thanks for any thoughts you can share. Keep the great vids coming sir. -Mel...

Helpful video! Thanks for that. Although the Mio10 is now discontinued, it put me on to the MioXL. I need a MIDI interface upgrade and was about to get the Motu Express XT (in-spite of the reported ongoing SYSEX problems - because what else is still out there?) - until I discovered your video. Two things that got my attention immediately: USB input and Ethernet. I have synth gear from pre-Midi (CV), MIDI, USB eras, and even 3.5mm to Midi DIN (adapter). Being able to connect most through one hub will be a big advantage. How reliable has your iConnectivity gear (hardware and software) been? Question I have at the moment is what is the difference between AVB and RTP? Eg MOTU and PreSonus uses AVB networking (I have a MOTU AVB switch and Audio Interfaces). Is the iConnectivity compatible with the AVB Switch, or will I have to plug it into a normal ethernet switch? I cannot find an answer through google, but I assume the latter. Will any conflicts result? I assume the computer can handle the different protocols through different host software. I also use Steinberg (Cubase) and other software on Windows 10. Also I assume the mioXL can be used in stand-alone mode without a computer - something I need ocassionally to connect my legacy hardware synths together without a PC.

I'm a little confused and hopefully you can clear this up.... This allows you to go from FL Studio MIDI out 1 into the mio10... which then goes from the output into all your synths.... & in FL Studio you can control all of your synths by giving each MIDI out inside FL Studio a different number?

I wish they had an iconfig reset if ya make an error as I did and I've had my mio10 since August 8th and as I finished all connections it ran as claimed but do make a video explaining how to fix the iconfig settings if everything was and is deselected you can reset it back to default in the iconfig program right now, this will be a major problem for new users and current users also. So please revise the manual for resetting the iconfig settings back to default as well add the iconfig reset defaults in auracle too this is required if you make a mistake routing information to and from devices. The reset function should also be in the auricle settings program and have all the settings backed on a USB drive. Figuring this out as a novice is not practical for anyone using any iconnectiviy unit. I'm contacting iconnectiviy Monday to see if I can resolve my mistake. Because my mio10 is blank and no instructions to read here, online at iconnectiviy.com anywhere is unexplainable. Be very careful what you route to and from any devices even if you do not know the iconfig program and it's preinstalled settings. This is what you get for not reading the default settings in the mio10 or other units main screens first six tabs and so forth. Recommend making some calls and changes to iconfig and reconfiguring iconfig into auracle so auracle can reset and resolve mistakes users make. Be careful. However make iconnectiviy aware of this.

apparently this doesn't support midi time stamping and the midi drift is different on every port, it gets much worse at port 8.. I am sticking with 2x motu microlite instead to get my 10 midi i/o. Would have been nice to only need one usb port but it is what it is.

  • @wotzefak1983

Hey, i just got my mio10 yesterday and i think i might have figured out how to configure the feature you needed... i am using a advance61 as a master keybord and have the ability to select the 16 midi-channels like you wanted to do... What i did on the OUTPUT filters on each synth port: enable all filters on the channels, the device should not listen to... so for the d-05 for example only the 5th "stack" is disabled (white) and so on... as all of my devices are configured (on the device) for port 1, i also did a remap on each OUTPUT midi port where the synths are connected with ENABLING (dark color) the reroute from port 5 to 1 (again the d-05 example) These 2 settings for each synth OUTPUT side... (filter + remap) solved the issue to me.... the funny thing is: as the virus is multitimbral, i did this for many ports of the virus so i can select the different virus tracks from the master keyboard as well an use it as "different synths" very easily... The bad thing about this kind of "workaround" is: only 16 channels!!! thats it.... But you could expand this idea with a second master keyboard routing to a complete new 16 channels on 16 diferent instruments - so if all 16 "instruments" from the first 16 port stack do not communicate to the 2nd. masterkeyboard, they'll not get any trigger from it... in fact i can do it with my master-keyboard alone because it has a second virtual port and i can select Channels A1-16 and also B1-16 - so i have 32 channels to use with only one master-keyboard... i am using: Virus TI2 polar, Virus TI2 Rack, D-05, Digitakt and getting Deepmind12 and Behringer Model D soon... Controllers are Akai Advance61, Beatstep Pro, Akai MPD232 and Keystep is ordered already...

i just wanted to add why i wrote OUTPUT in big letters: on the port-filters and channel-remap tabs, in the left upper corner the little select box is automativly set to INPUT... which means the INPUT PORT on the mio side.... but the communication TO the synth is on the mio OUTPUT side.... so this little box-entrry has to be changed to OUTPUT in order to geht the correct interface for these settings!

My VoodooLab Ground Control Pro Foot Controller stops responding, sending MIDI messages after 5 minutes of use, i don't know why this happens every time ! Do you think this MIDI Box could solve this problem of MIDI messages errors, weak signals and latency ?

Sounds like the issue is in the controller itself; I'd suggest hoking it up to a computer and using something like MIDI-OX (www.midiox.com/) to check what's actually coming out of it..

If I understand your main issue with the Mio-10, it is that a device, plugged into say, DIN port 3, has all port, channel, and event mapping set...once. One channel map, for all its port maps...yes? If so, I think problem resolution enters a numbers game. Example...right now, the config file preset contains 16 channel remap datapoints for each of 56 MIDI ports, or 896 total datapoints related to channel mapping. If a single device can be channel mapped 56 different times, depending on what it's connected TO...then you'd have 56 channel maps, containing 16 data points each, per device, times 56 devices, or 50,000 plus data points, for a single variable, channel mapping. Then, applying event filters etc, you'd be up into billion (or more) variable territory very quickly. Not just a case of having to store them, but each switch would then have to be set by the user as well. Not saying it's impossible, but... Here at E4 Multimedia, we have a 30 port ADAT multiplex, the Z-Systems Optipatch Plus. It connects 11 audio interfaces, which are hosted by 6 PCs. (Motu PCI(e) 424 cards with multiple breakout boxes per card.) After slugging thru a mind bending system wide setup, involving 19.5 million variables, we added one more device...and the variable count shot up to 5 billion plus. This shut us down for months as far as progress went. We didn't get a handle on it until we seperated the routing task into three discrete levels. Room to room, we have 4 blocks of routings, those which terminate in (record to) room one, are under block 1, terminate in room 2, block 2 etc. Each of these is a simple 15 inputs, routed to any of 15 outputs, 225 variables. We ignore the 8 audio channels riding on each of the 225 ADAT pipes, at this level. Drilling down to the mid-complexity level, we have the DSP mixer config presets for each interface. PC 1 lives in room 1, and only needs DSP configs for ADAT configs routed there. (Not the whole story, but illustrative.) Finally, at the lowest level, we have DAW templates, to take advantage of various high level ADAT routings, when married with individual DSP routings at the middle interface level. This allows us to build ultra complex, 5 billion variable, routings, at a modular level, and this is the only way I see to rationally approach your objective. Put simply...a saved file that contains only channel maps, in a folder full of numerous other channel mappings. Another, seperate file folder, full of port mapping files. This way, you'd be assembling fundamental building blocks, over months or years, one manageable chunk at a time. The Mio-10 interface software would have to be modified to load not just one massive config preset, but instead, several smaller ones at different levels. Port map number 003, combined with channel map(s) 0017, 0043 and 0056. The biggest problem with larger multiplexes (arrays), isn't setting the few switches you actually need, instead, it is UN setting the ones you don't. A modular approach resolves as much of this tedium...as we're able to...so far. Finally...a simple request. My Mio-10 arrives two days from now. I can see great utility, I think, in two simple additional buttons per page. "Enable all" and "Disable all". In fact, my first task, on Mio-10 arrival, will be from lessons learned from the ADAT octapus. Set everything to off, (by and large) and save that preset as the default starting point for all my future config builds.

The complexity you describe in this instance is only a problem if you're trying to brute-force the entire mapping matrix. That's horribly inefficient, and almost certainly unnecessary; I don't know whether there's any special tricks (FPGA, parallel stuff) being done in the MIDI processing on this device to reduce latency, but if it's a straight up traditional serial processing algorithm, I'd expect there's an input buffer (holding MIDI messages tagged with source port), an output buffer, and an algorithm inbetween that writes on or more output messages based on input+config. If you want to guarantee the latency of this process then yes, you fix the size of the config complexity. But that doesn't mean that it has to store every possible combination; a fixed size list of connections (Input port, Input channel, Output port, Output channel) would equally achieve guaranteed latency and I'm sure it could be more than big enough than anyone would ever need to use (famous last words of course, but MIDI data is small and slow.)

I'm with you, but from your video, it seemed you wanted much more granularity than just In port/channel and Out port/channel. I thought you were asking for mapping and filtering on each of those, independantly. That's where the variables can start to pile up. And like you note, you'd be at the mercy of whatever default config they choose. (All DINs feeding all DINs.) The "Diable All" and "Enable All" buttons I mentioned is precisely to avoid the brute force necessity of having to flip every switch. I like your "not broke, don't fix it" approach too. Leave thruput unchanged, regarding mapping and filtering, unless it needs changed.
