@@stoniptfosupersonic Ovo je najbolja generacija, pogotovo mislim na igru u kvalifikacijama 95g i ovaj euro. Igrali smo tada kao Brazil, bili ispred jake Italije koja je bila vice prvak svijeta, na euru ispali od Njemaca od kojih smo bili bolji, oni su na kraju osvojili.

This tournament was the peak of the original Vatreni in terms of the quality of the football they played. Came through qualifying on top in a group with Baggio's Italy, put on this brilliant second half and were unlucky/stupid in the quarter-final against the Germans. The eternal question remains what would've happened had the coach Blazevic decided to play for top spot in the last group game against Portugal. I'd love to have seen the reaction of fans and the football public had a coach of England, Italy, Germany etc. made such a huge mistake. He copped heat for it in Croatia but still kept his job. Two years later the team had a great run at the WC but did so without playing too great. Blazevic made some changes, by the end of the group stage he dropped Prosinecki again, giving the midfield more balance and being prepared to outfox teams rather than try to play them off the park. Real pity we never got to see Boksic (apart from 45 minutes in the opener at Euro 96) in this team at a major tourney. He didn't play his best for Croatia but he could've been the difference in some big games. The Modric generation similarly played its best football before the WC final run in 2018. For a lot of people the performance in the group stage at Euro 2016 was the best football ever played by a Croatian national team. Unfortunately, they ran into Portugal in the second round where Santos was simply too smart for Croatia's non-league standard coach Cacic. They just killed the game, pressed Modric and Rakitic high, isolated Perisic and the Croatian coach sat there and watched it all unfold. From memory his first change came with 2-3 minutes to go in the 90. Under Dalic at Russia things finally came together, Rakitic was played deep and Modric pushed up into an attacking midfield role. Brozovic was played in a position that most suited him and these changes were key. The rest was a bit of luck and an unbelievable spirit within the team. Comparing the two teams I still favour the 1996-98 team. I think it was more well-rounded. Modric the best individual from both generations but generally there was more quality in the team in 1996-98 with Suker, Boban, Asanovic, Prosinecki, Jarni, Stanic, Bilic... The original Vatreni were a genuine mix of the old Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb schools. The more refined Dinamo style (Suker, Boban, Prosinecki) combined with the more robust, direct, physical-type produced by Hajduk (Boksic, Jarni, Asanovic, the whole defence). The 2018 generation was very much a product of Dinamo's school with the odd standout coming from elsewhere.

Bao Nguyen you can tell from that performance that Šuker is a forward thinker. When your mind’s already in the goal, then the control, knowing what to do, it all just follows naturally...

I cant believe that this Croatian team never won a Euro or a world cup. I know they came close but my Jesus, this Croatian team is one of the best ever football teams I have ever seen. As for Davor Suker, yes he is for me in my top 5 best ever football players of all time

EURO '96. and WC '98. were the peaks of this generation. We didn't qualify for EURO '00 and in Korea/Japan majority of this players were 34-35 and some didn't even play football anymore.

As a Croat, as much as I'm proud of my home team, the same way I have an utmost respect for Peter Scmeichel. One of the best goalkeepers in history. 🤘

I fell in love with the Croatian team during this tournament from day one. They were awesome throughout. Then in France, they were so unlucky in the semis against France in 98. I think if they'd played that final, they'd also have beat Brazil. Such a classy team of players.

@@kristijanEX I think that was original golden gen. Both teams needed little lady luck to take it all. Plus Croatia was Brand- New country, and football of that time was prettier. Original Vatreni had some SWAGGER boy. Perhaps the 3rd time the throne

@@bayridge3569 Agree. Remember Suker scored first in semis vs France and then french defender (I WILL not say his Name) scored 2 lucky goals and those were the premium ones in his career. Guy never ever in his professional time scored, but then he does in world semis vs Croatia. There would be no doubt in my mind they would had win it if they made it to finals.

Having watched Croatia in both 1998 and 2018 I would say that the 98 side was more talented, but the 18 gen was more physically fit. A lot of the game's evolution in the last 2 decades has to do with the physical training (speed and endurance). If Suker's side had the training programs that Modric & Co. enjoyed, they would have been champions in both 1996 and 1998.

I think this '96/'98 Croatia team is even better than the 2018 World Cup one: Suker is a unique striker, plus we had a better defence. Also we had more players with technical skills who could pass the ball.

Suker was a gem, but as for defense I think we just finally dialed in with youngsters against France. If Petkovic would return to his old self, sku would be limit in Qatar

Hmm, not sure about that. Šuker is the best striker we've ever had, and Boban and Prosinečki were fantastic midfielders. But Modrić's quality is on another level altogether, not to mention also that Perišić is the finest winger we've produced. A combination of the two teams picked with players in their prime would be unstoppable though.

@@Zoso_1990 the 1998 team had leaders all over the pitch, both Boban and Zuti were leaders, also Bilic and Stimac were solid at the back....I would equate Perisic to Stanic, yes Perisic is slightly better. I would say Modric is the absolute standout in 2018 team vs 1996/8 But then there is Suker to equal that.

This is the first golden generation of Croatia, along with the team at 2018.

Davor Suker was a classy left footed genius of a forward!!

I'm not a football fan but I watched these games as a little kid, I had no choice, the grownups controlled the remote 😁 and 8:35 is my favorite moment in football, ever, and one of top moments in sport. Crazy bold attempt from halfcourt but he ALMOST made it, Schmeichel managed to tip it out - and then a mutual sign of respect 👍 - such a moment, pure sport!

Probably the best team in history of Croatia...It was a fantastic generation of footballers and unbelievable EURO performance.

Brilliant, orgasmic football match, ill never forget it. First big victory in first euro for croatia. Earlier croatia beat spain in friendly, and italy in qualif for euro96, but this was somenthing special. Suker was god on earth. Greetings for denmark and good people there, wish you best!

I remember this Euro96, I expected Portugal and Croatia to go really far, both have been eliminated in quarter finals. In the Portuguese case really unlucky as they fired 20 shots, and attacked the whole game, but a sensational lob by Poborsky gave the Czechs the semi final birth. After that Portugal played 2 finals, and 3 semi finals in the last 5 Euros..I wish u guys in Croatia also good luck for the future.. 🙏 from a portuguese football friend⚽🇵🇹

Glöm ej entré på den stora fotbollscenen eftersom ni har inte riktigt "funnits" i fotbollssammanhang dessförinnan åtminstone inte förrän VM ´86. Laudrup den äldre, Sören o löparen Elkjaer. Great squad in the 90s Croatia. Suker was brilliant especially. Brilliant team.

After a 24 hour flight from Sydney , we travelled from London to Sheffield for this game on the first full day of our honeymoon in 1996. The previous day we jumped on an open top bus to witness English and Scottish supporters chant at each other across Trafalgar Square. All marriages should start this well.

Man these were the Glory days of danish and Croatian football.. iconic players for both sides. Both teams could of won Gold if they had a touch of luck as the skill set, grit and heart were there. When small nations like this dominate it truly is something special. We could only admire the players of this time. Some legends of the sport.

It's a crime we never got to properly see Boksic and Suker together in tournament football

I watched this game on live television. I was full on supporting Hrvatska, as a fellow Balkan :)

Tu smo rasturili Dansku a gle čuda sa,o godinu dana kasnije upravo zahvaljujući Danskoj a prije svega Schmeichelu smo otišli u Francusku ( spasio nasu kvalifikacijma svojim obranama u zadnjoj tekemi protiv Grčke). Što ti je sudbina.

@@nikolasmiljanic1403 Slažem se i dodao bih detalj koji se ne priča. U finišu kval za SP98 u Sarajevu su Danci izgubili 3-0, a da nisu izgubili u Ateni bi Danci igrali opušteno i popušili. Ovako su tražili taj 1 bod i ugurali HR u baraž. Hvala DK, ali možda i više hvala BiH !!! Navodno je uoči te tekme u Bih Ćiro posjetio njihov savez🙂

I am croatian, watched this team and our team from 2018, and I can say this without any doubt: Modrić is our best player ever, but Prosinecki is our most talented player ever. Period. Remember that Maradona once said for Prosinecki; "he has better dribling skills than me". Cheers

Ja sam imao tu srecu gledati ga 2 puta uzivo i to izvedju 1989 i 1990. Dva puta na Grbavici protiv Zelje i na Kosevu 1990/91 protiv Sarajeva. Takodjer ga vidio sa svojih 12ak godina "face to face"u Holiday Inn-u u Sarajevu (prije tekme sa Zeljom) i dobio autogram od njega, Andeja Panadica, Shalle i Igora Cvitanovica. Cvita je te sezone po 1. puta zaigrao za Dinamo. Usao sa klupe u 88. minuti na maksimiru protiv Sarajeva (6-0) i zabio 2 gola u 2 minute!!! Da li si ti iz Sarajeva? ja sam dio djetinjstva proveo na Grbavici (od 3 do 13te).... Skoro da nisam propustio utakmicu na Grbavici, iako oduvijek Dinamovac, zbog cega sam dobio toliko puta batina u istom Sarajevu ;p

I remember Croatia outplayed us, but watching the highlights again... Oh dear, oh dear. That Croatia team was world class in Euro 96 and Denmark were in very poor shape

My goodness. Croatia's golden generation in its finest form as they began to hit their stride towards France 98, which they came close to winning as a debutante nation. And the world began to appreciate Suker, who was sublime here. Schmeichel (and now his son) must still have nightmares of the Croatian spectre.

This was my first ever euro to watch when i was 9 and the games were soo entertaining..i named 1 of my first childhood friends Boban cause they looked almost alike and cause we played in the same team and he was a striker and scored so many goals...will never forget this croatian team!!!

@@flykicksdj we knocked out the Germans 3:0 in the quarter final and won a bronze medal, in our first World cup ever, a country of only 4 million people. And last year in Russia we won a silver medal ;)

This was the day the commentator did NOT know who SUKER really is and claims he wanted to do a Pele. And yes, in reality he is MUCH better than Pele.

Check Croatia-Ireland 1999 Suker goal. One in football history.

Only one player was missing. The classical left-winger and attacker.That would be nr 11, Alen Boksic. The one and only. Totally overall-skilled. Find him a match nowadays;)

Šteta za 82'. Tad je Jugoslavija mogla komotno osvojiti turnir. Uvijek mi je bilo čudno da Miljanić nije zvao Kranjčara i Mlinarića - prvake s Dinamom. Da se nije raspala uzeli bi ''čileanci' Euro 96' i WC 98' pod uvjetom selekcije odrađene po formi i statusu igrača neovisno o nacionalnosti. Pozdrav iz Pule i sretno u Katru!

Suker was pure class.

Golman Hrvatske Danijel Subašić je tek drugi golman u istoriji Svetskih prvenstava koji je uspeo odbraniti 3 penala tokom penal serije.

I was 5 when seeing this game and I still remember it like yesterday. The battle between Schmeichel and Suker, 2 gentlemen of the sport. Croatias first appearance in the finest of rooms. Is it just me or did this time (90's and the early 2000's) contain players with strong character? Im talking about everyone from Schmeichel, Suker, Boban, Cantona, Keane, Beckham, Oliver Kahn, Bierhoff and the list goes on and on. Nowadays players change their hair color more often than they score a goal, or just having some cringy celebrations like griezmann/pogba. I miss the golden days of football.

Honestly the 90's had the best players. Goodness me! Suker was a monster.

Davor Šuker..... one and only... however, beating the European champions 3-0 was a clear sign that Croatia had one very talented team.

Croatia having a white away kit seems pretty pointless. I've also just realised that Denmark were defending Euro champions!

@Tom Santo zgd It came in place for a reason, they where "best of losers" but they grabed their given oportunity and won. Yugoslavia had good team (as usual) but i doubt they could be champions ... Balkan mentality is like ... well ... Balkan itself - explosive 💣

@Johnny Hash In the end yeah, but in 60's twice 2nd on euro and once 4th in world... They were on fire. Then 70's were bad and after Tito died, Yugoslavia died also.
