John Farrow (director) was an Australian and lived an adventurous life. He fathered seven children with his second wife, actress Maureen O'Sullivan. He passed away quite young, aged just 58, from a heart attack in 1963.

Thanks for posting. These late 40's westerns really had some class especially from the big studios like Paramount. John Farrow an underrated Director.

I hadn't watched this movie in over 50 years and was so looking forward to it. It was so disappointing that the sound was so out of sync.

Capt. Pharaoh Coffin - now there's a name! Enjoy anything with Barbara Stanwyck, she was a very versatile actress and of course the dashing Ray Milland, very talented comic actor. See The Doctor Takes a Wife, my fave.

Good movie, pity the audio is out of sync a little. The problem is that the dates of the events depicted in this movie are all off. The Mexican American war was 1846 and California won it's independence from Mexico in 1847 and became an independent country, the Republic of California, with it's own President and Constitution. It remained so for a total of 9 days before officially joining the United States as the Territory of California. Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill by the recently released soldiers of the Mormon Battalion, US Army of the West, who were hired by Capt. Sutter to build his mill later on in 1847. The news of this gold discovery was taken back east by them in 1848 when they returned to their families in Iowa. This news in turn started the 1849 gold rush to California.

Não entendo, o porque de postar um vídeo, de um bom filme, e não ter a opção de legendas, em Português, gente estamos no Brasil, o nosso idioma é o português, para quem não sabe, é lamentável, no KZread, tem boas opções, mas as produções cinematográficas dos anos 20, 30, 40, 50.60...poucos tem legendas em Português...

Yes, the sound was about 1 second late.

Pour le sous-titre en français, appuyez de façon prolongée sur les deux CC. Ensuite, choisissez votre langue, français, portugais etc....

I would have enjoyed the movie much more if the sound had been in sink with their mouths.

What gorgeous, old Technicolor Western I noticed lots of long takes, which should mean excellent cast, crew, and director. It's a shame the sound on this copy is out of sync especially considering that the print is mint quality. Try to fix it, won't you?

Just take me back home to Oklahoma. My older brother said that when they moved from Oklahoma they were stopped at the border and before they were allowed in all of their mattresses were ripped open to make sure they didn’t have any bed bugs 🐛 in them. I’m 79 now and my brother is 96. His wife is 98 and they live in Utah. When they lived in California he was Superintendent of the Highways. His wife was a high school teacher in Watts during the Watt’s uprising. The gates were locked and before they were let in they had to show identification. Her students were mostly black with only a few white students. One of her students was pregnant and my sister-in-law made her promise to bring the baby back to show her after she was born. She was holding the baby and a little black girl about 6 or 7 years old was sitting on a bench nearby watching. She went over and asked my sister-in-law whose baby it was and she told her that it was hers. She said that the little girl walked slowly around her, looked seriously at her, nodded slowly and said,Nu uh. 😅

The mouth were behind the words 😅

Rather maudlin, with awkward stunts/fights, often corny dialog. Very different roles for Barry Fitzgerald and Albert Dekker. Rather standard fare for Barbara Stanwyck but unusual for Ray Milland. Check out Milland in "A Man Alone" (1955), a much better western.

But the voice track of this film copy being out-of-sync with the "visuals" is totally undesirable, inexcusable *_and_* intolerable = 👎 15 minutes in = ADIOS!!!! 😝 SAD.... since otherwise at minimum, this is an unusual though well-scripted role and a role performance by Barbara Stanwyck.

I like old American films. No blacks in the frame.

Farrows a weird director. I don’t care for his movies. California was lacking something idk. A great director would have known what was lacking. Barbara being Barbara not a bad thing, love her. Millands fight scene with the knife was comical, I was embarrassed for him. Scene should have been reshot. Barbara and Milland had zero chemistry. The gold rush aye. Farrow did show how money turns humans into greedy monsters. Shame on them pilgrims. Where were the Native Americans? Oh, being stripped of their culture. And the blue coats Satans army.

Unfortunately unwatchable because sound and pictures aren't synchronous. Please be fair and delete it so that somebody will upload a better version.
