I mean I kinda makes sense when you remember the new Mean Girls is an adaptation of the musical. On stage, you have to make everything more dramatic and in your face so the audience can see it. If the original Regina acted the same way on stage, it would be wayyy harder to understand her.

It doesn’t work because the 2004 line is high key homophobic but in 2024 Regina George is supposed to be a queer icon and also Janice is canonically lesbian in the musical version, so the homophobia would be out of place.

Rachel's Regina is so subtle yet so effective. She's not the aggressive kind of mean, but more of like the subtle and intense kind, which makes her character even more terrifying. I love Renee, but yeah, the OG will always be it.

@@carinag4635really? I feel like it’s the opposite! I’d say bullying was way more in your face and aggressive in the past, and people got away with it because schools weren’t dealing with it. I feel like the last 10-15 years there’s been a big anti-bullying movement and today’s kids are more aware so the ones that are bullies have to be more subtle. But I also don’t know, I’m a millennial and I don’t know too many Gen z’ers in high school. I guess Gen z’ers are a little more in-your-face and outspoken, with a more morbid sense of humor so I guess I could see that too.

@@slideshowgurllol what. Today’s bullies are definitely not subtle. It depends on where you live ig. My high school was in a run down area, but it also had a special program that people would come from the neighboring city to attend. So you had a bunch of rich kids from the other city and then you had the kids who actually lived in the area. The rich kids were jerks and would straight laugh in your face. There was a lot of sarcasm and in your face bullying but no fighting. Everyone else was a lot more chill; if someone didn’t like you they’d just ignore you, but if you pissed them off it could lead to a fight. I don’t remember anyone other than the rich kids bullying people. They used to snatch people’s tests up in the middle of class and laugh at your grade man. And they got away with it bec they were rich and the school was run down so none of the teachers were gonna say anything. There’s tons of bullying movements, but it hasn’t changed much.

The actresses in the older version *actually* acted. They embodied their roles completely instead of just giving expressions and acting like they were trying to act. Like it's so easy to tell in the remake that the actors are just acting but in the original, you couldn't tell whether the character was real or not.

What made Regina so iconic was the fact that for most of the movie she’s nonchalant and passive aggressive.

I think some of yall are forgetting the 2024 version is a mix of the 2004 movie and the MUSICAL. Not just with singing, but ALSO ACTING. Some things are a bit more turned up because it's supposed to be MORE theatrical than the 2004 movie, but tamer than the musical.

New Regina is the only one who measures up. Because, you have to remember the new version is a Musical (apparantly, yet they chose a lead who can’t sing but none of my business). So a more dramatic and theatrical Regina makes sense. However, that does not account for literally everyone else’s lacklustre performances when accounting for the musical aspect. 2004 nailed it from the get go. So good.

Regina played the role on spot actually the way she said " get in looser" by yalling actually gives you are in trouble vibe but the later version of it was just way too extra for no reason. The way she asked "get in looser" gives more boyfriend vibes than a mean person.

I never got around to watching either movie all the way through... but just looking at this, there's something unnatural about the remake. Like it just feels like they're aiming for perfection and forcing it too much to the point where it just doesn't work.

@@stanbtsforaclearskin It's still a remake, just a musical version. It's not like it's full of twists and turns, just a bunch of songs, and some adjusted content to fit the songs. Otherwise, it's enough of a remake for a proper comparison, and the acting is still...off.
