Iconic Jet Aircraft - MiG-15 Dogfighter

Ғылым және технология

Subscribe - goo.gl/wpc2Q1
Revolutionary design made the Soviet MiG-15 one of the best dogfighters of its day, and is believed to have been one of the most widely produced jet aircraft ever made.
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 was a jet fighter aircraft developed by Mikoyan-Gurevich OKB for the Soviet Union. The MiG-15 was one of the first successful jet fighters to incorporate swept wings to achieve high transonic speeds. In combat over Korea, it outclassed straight-winged jet day fighters which were largely relegated to ground attack roles, and was quickly countered by the similar American swept-wing F-86 Sabre. The MiG-15 is often mentioned, along with the North American F-86 Sabre, as the best fighter aircraft of the Korean War, and among the best fighter aircraft of all time.
Clip from the documentary “Tycoon Toys - Fighter Jets”.
Watch it here - • Tycoon Toys - Fighter ...
What do the super-rich choose to spend their hard-won zillions on? We meet individuals who have a particular penchant for owning, driving and firing huge pieces of ex-military hardware, from field guns to tanks to fighter jets. Tycoon Toys goes on a journey to watch them at play.

I saw my first MIG-15 in the early 1980's. I was surprised at its small size. I can understand why the MIG-15 excelled in dogfights because an opposing pilot would have a hard time seeing it at high speed.

Apparently the design was largely influenced by the ME262, which was the first operational jet fighter ever built. Those Germans really did have a jump on everyone. If it wasn't for that psycho Hitler, they might have been the first with the bomb and spaceflight too.

Yeah, they didn't show the correct stock footage, although I think it does include the MiG-15 along with the La-15 & MiG-17. The MiG-15 UTI landing light is located at the left wing root, on the bottom near the leading edge. It swings down and forward, when turned on, like the landing lights of the MiG-21. It isn't at the top of the engine air intake like on the bis. If you look up pictures from the right angle of the UTI, you will see I am correct. And the bis could carry 440 lbs of bombs, not 1000... :P

I know, there's a tank and shit but when you're standing next to it, your brain just ... dk, doesn't get it.. It's was different than seeing any other plane in my life .. when you see a more modern plane, it's bigger, and you wonder how can something this big be so maneuverable in the skies.. when you see a bomber , you wonder how can this behemoth fly, and marvel at the size of them .. Love going to airplane museums, your mind works like a child's .. The Russians wore leather helmets in these at the start because that was what they were used to. Once ejection fatalities mounted up, it became obvious that helmets were required to survive ejection so they modified the leather helmet to act as a liner for an outer shell, which has two visors and these helmets are still in widespread use today. Western flight helmets use a permanent liner and some Western helmet wearers wear a cloth skullcap under the helmet to absorb sweat.

Yes, it is true that initially, the MiG-15 had an advantage over the P(F)-80s in the air in Korea, but that was countered by the F-86 whose record against the MiG-15 was impressive. The days when the MiG-15 were the best dog fighter in the skies were very brief.

How could he say those number of crashes when these planes are very rare in western countries. Not more than dozen . If those crashes did really happen then the MIG in western hands would have gone extinct.

@@billyrock8305 Righhht. The North Koreans admitted to losing 100 MiGs at least, the Chinese admitted to losing 224, the Soviets admitted losing 335. The USAF says only 78 F-86A, E, and F models were lost to MiG engagements. These are all official. Here is a complete compiled list of all UN aircraft that was lost during the Korean War that has not just U.S. aircraft but also from other nations as well. All aircraft lost or destroyed through a miriad of circumstances. Not necessarily by air-to-air combat. It's a 239 page pdf. @@billyrock8305 I have never seen a pit bull run from a fight like the MiG-15 did whenever F-86s showed up. BagoPorkRinds gave you the facts. "Nobody messes with it"? On November 18, 1952,, Lt. Royce Williams, flying an F9F Panther, "messed" with 6 MiG-15s, all by himself. he shot 4 of them down, all flown by Russian pilots. This was confirmed many years later by the Russians. For nearly 70 years, Russia has produced aircraft that are nothing more than flying coffins when American fighters appear. American troops, therefore, have never had the shit bombed out of them the way Russian allies have been during that period. Why? After the F-86 showed up in Korea, Russian fighters have never achieved sustained air superiority over American fighters to allow Russian bombers to get through the way fleets of American bombers have routinely.

@@duanepigden1337 Fun fact: On Nov. 18, 1952., Lt. Royce Williams, flying a Panther from the carrier Oriskany, took on 6 MiG-15s all by himself. He shot down shot down 4 of them, all piloted by Soviets. This was confirmed many years later by the Russians. The Soviets got more than the Rolls Royce engine from the Brits. As I posted to Patrick EH here, the NKVD's KhU Line in the U.S. acquired things like jet engine technology, metallurgy, production methods & figures, problems encountered, airframe design, plus wind tunnel and other testing. This helped the Soviets know where Western technology was, whether it was superior to the Germans, and also it helped them understand what not to do as well as how we approached and resolved problems encountered. They recruited spies in the U.S. aircraft production industry and government to steal the data. Some of the spies they recruited included: Mikael K. Cham, Joseph & Leona Franey, Loren Haas, William Perl, Victor Perlo, Aleksandr Petroff, William Pinsly, William Plourde, William Remington, Amadeo Sabatini, Greg Silvermaster, Harold Smelzer, William Weisband and Jones O. York. Here is an example of a May 1944 NKVD intelligence report containing intelligence provided by William Perl on U.S. jet engines: www.nsa.gov/public_info/_files/venona/1944/20may_gnome.pdf

Of course it doesn't like low speeds, of course it's dangerous to fly by novices; Just like all fixed, back swept wing aircraft!! You can't just jump in and go. You need preparation, study, and an experienced instructor, before attempting to fly alone in any of these type of planes. The Mig 15 is like sitting on top of hypersonic missile. But, boy, once you master to fly the Mig15s, no other fighter of this type stands much of a chance. The proper, objective statistics and reports by opposition pilots speak for themselves!! Some fanatical sabre commentators argue that the sabre was equal, or better, but that doesn't square with the objective reports of the Korean war.
