One of the saddest days of my childhood was the day the Mets traded Tom Seaver to the Reds. I'm sure that many Mets fans of my generation felt the same way. Seaver will forever be my favorite baseball player ever!

@@8avexp I’m amazed that you remember the exact dates that you saw the great Tom Seaver pitch for the Mets at Shea Stadium back in the 1970s. I, too, was privileged to see Mr. Seaver pitch for the Mets during the early-to-mid 1970s at the Big Shea. One of my fondest memories is of watching Tom Seaver pitch his almost-no hitter against the Cubs during the Mets’ Miracle Year in 1969 with my grandfather on Channel 9. My father, who had been watching the game at our own home down the block, came over to my grandparents’ home after the “immortal” Jimmy Qualls broke up Tom Seaver’s no-hit bid, saying that he did not want to jinx Tom Seaver by turning off his TV set while Tom was still mowing down the mighty Chicago Cubs.

@@kensellers4082 Get this: I remember seeing Tug McGraw come out and loosen up throwing right-handed! Lindsey Nelson mentioned that McGraw was ambidextrous and could in fact throw righthanded.

@@8avexp Yes, the late Tug McGraw certainly marched to the beat of his own drum. I’m sure you remember that “great” Mets trade of Tug McGraw and the two “immortals” Don Hahn and Dave Schneck to the Phillies for Del Unser, the equally “immortal” Mac Scarce and young catcher John “The Bad Dude” Stearns. (May John Stearns Rest In Peace.) At least, the “Bad Dude” gave us some fine moments while playing for those truly lousy Met teams of the late 1970s. Tug McGraw’s autobiography, “Ya Gotta Believe!” is a great read. Tragically, McGraw died from a brain tumor in 2004 at the young age of 59. You get a sense of your own mortality seeing the ballplayers you admired as a kid dying, like Tom Seaver, Tug McGraw, Tommie Agee and Rusty Staub.

@@kensellers4082 The Mets felt that McGraw was damaged goods when his left shoulder started hurting. After the trade, they discovered a benign cyst behind the shoulder, and after it was surgically removed, McGraw recovered completely.

Who's thinking about TOM SEAVER on February 6 2023 in the middle of winter. Albert "Doc" Schweitzer!!!!! that's who! My Boyhood idol!!!! So Much so-----I buried my Father with my cherished Tom Seaver rookie Card in the casket. Your Boyhood idol NEVER EVER leaves you. Nancy and Tom were the budding perfect example of a perfect couple. They stayed married all these years. Just like Tom---Nancy was a showcase trophy wife if EVER!!!!! Thanks to New Met owner Steve Cohen for finally DOING HE RIGHT THING for Tom and family. That statue of Tom is a necessary healing for me. TY 64 yrs old next week(me)
