Right down to his wind-up and delivery Seaver was text book perfect #the franchise

I feel 100 years older. I remember him when I was a kid. What a great pitcher and quality person. I can't believe he is gone. And this is coming from a Yankees fan. Best pitcher in MLB for over a decade. Pure Greatness. RIP No. 41

Life long Yankee fan (from Cleveland), but always a big fan of such a quality ball player and first class guy as Tom Seaver. We all get old and we’ll all pass, but I was quite saddened that Tom and his family had to suffer through the ravages of dementia. RIP.

R.I.P Tom Seaver, I was 9 years ago when Tom Seaver Pitched For My Favorite Team, The Chicago White Sox, And I Lost My Mom at 67Years old, It hurts So bad Loosing Mom of August 16th Sunday, and loosing Tom Seaver, if my mom was still living she would’ve Been 68Years Old Labor Day

So am I and feel so blessed to have watched Tom Seaver in a Reds uniform. More so, to have watched him in any uniform. Tom Terrific was who my parents wanted me to be, not as an athlete, but as a person. This era of my life has passed, but I pray that there are kids who come along and emulate him. Now it is time to grieve Tom and that remarkable time from my childhood.

R.I.P you will be missed Tom Seaver.

Man, this one hurts. Tom was as great off the field as he was off it. That's why he will always be my favorite athlete. Condolences to Nancy, his daughters, and my fellow Mets fans. RIP, Tom Terrific.

@@rickgeller6043 I don't think anyone is idolizing or worshipping you. I don't think anyone even likes you.

I kind of remember the sports media labeling Seaver as "the Golden Boy" and a "can't miss prospect" while he was still pitching at USC. With all this popularity and attention bestowed upon him, He seemed to be humble and a nice guy. I'm glad he had a successful baseball career.

My favorite player of all time, my neice who is a Phillies fan sent me a text of the news, my heart was broken and i had tears in my eyes. R.I.P. #41 Tom Seaver you gave the Mets fans many great years on the field pitching. I loved to watch you pitch, you will be missed ! The baseball world lost a great man today !

My first taste of his broadcasting chops was the 1977 World Series when Reggie hit his 3rd home run in Game 6 "on the black" in the old Yankee Stadium. He knew that Charlie Hough knuckeball was tagged before the other guys in the booth AND gave a perfect breakdown of Reggie's body language and his mechanics. A testament to his greatness that is that he on an EXTREMELY short list of the all-time starting pitchers you could want in an elimination game. A longtime met fan said it best regarding the Midnight Massacre. My parents had Walter O'Malley. I had M. Donald Grant. At least Frank Cashen owned up to making a mistake.

Great piece. Well done. As a 42 year old life long Met fan, even though I never got to see him pitch in a Mets uniform, I still welled up at the end of this one. Great pitcher. Even better human being. They didn't really touch on that in this piece but all the stories you hear about Seaver were overwhelmingly positive. He was good to his teammates, opponents and the fans. The emotion he felt when he was traded was so genuine. You'll be missed Tom Terrific. Greatest Met of all time. RIP George Thomas Seaver.

My mother died from Alzheimer's on April 27, 1997.

I still have some of his baseball cards from when I was a teenager. He will be dearly missed.

I always remembered that the whole sport of baseball considered him one of the nicest guys around as well. We need more class like Tom these days. What a great role model, gentleman and professional with integrity.

Mike Pantaleo He would do Mets games on WPIX from 1999 to 2005 (mixing with the Mets FSNY and MSG teams) and even did Yankees games on WPIX from ‘89-‘93

First MLB player death that has truly saddened me. This guy was special to us kids growing up on Long Island. 😢

I was 8, when my dad woke me to get up from sleep and watch Tom Seaver. He was"on". Two spots and a hop. It was the 19 strikeout game and I watched the last 7 batters. A glimpse at perfection I still remember

I loved this guy! All Class and one of the greatest ever. I'm a Reds fan and watched him beat the Reads 1 - 0 and Tom hit the home run to win the game.

Today I woke up to very sad news, a big part of my youth Tom Seaver's passing. I'll never forget the 69 season when the miracle Met's won their first World Series, I was a senior in High School. RIP Tom thank's for all the great memories, you really were terrific.

I was in box seats between 3rd n home with my avid parents under 10yrs old at Shea Stadium in the late 60's early 70's. Great memories of being right there! A true legend we will always know! RIP Sir! He was definitely a handsome guy as well!

Thank you for this post commemorating the memorable MLB career of Tom Seaver up upon his recent passing. As a long time native Fresno Californian from his hometown I would like to pass on my remembrances of him. Although I was not a close personal friend of him while we both attended Alexander Hamilton Jr High on 102 East Clinton Avenue in Fresno and also later at Fresno High on 1839 North Echo Ave ( we didn't attend grammar school together as he was at Fremont Elementary near where with his parents Mr and Mrs Charles Seaver on North Channing Way. above West Clinton Avenue. I attended T.L Heaton Elementary School on East McKinley. He graduated from Fresno High in 1962 and I graduated in 1963 as I was a year behind him. His story in his early life is from my observation experiences as well as a friend his who grew up in the same neighborhood on Channing Way and was in the 1961 class of Fresno High. From this friend of his , who I became acquainted with as a neighbor several years ago, as well as my own recollections of contact with him are interesting life lessons and principals to be learned from George Thomas, aka Tom Seaver or" Tommy Terrific " Seaver that many of today's parents, who overly push their young athletically inclined in God blessed athletic talent to become major league ability by the time they are 12 or 13 years old and also pushing them in other sports as well, causing them to burn out and never have it fully developed. When Tom was young he did exhibit some baseball talent. His father Charles, who is a golf pro an avid amateur golfer, State on top of Tom Seaver to practice and become what he thought he could be from being disciplined in baseball pitching. At the time,,Tom Seaver, who didn't appreciate his father's mentorship for discipline, has he was a young junior high student with other interests that happen when you are in puberty going toward young adulthood. However , he obediently acceeded as he could to his father's desires. I batted against him when I was trying out for the Hamilton Jr high Hurricane baseball team in early Spring 1958. He was in the 8th grade in this junior high that went through the 9th grade. I remember he had a very good fastball as I struck out on my first appearance before him. He didn't have any other types of pictures with she developed later on. Although he was accomplished in Babe Ruth League Baseball after he was 12,,( He pitched for the city wide championship game in a losing effort against Wade Blasinggame , a left handed pitcher who later stared at Roosevelt High School in Fresno, eventually be coming a picture for the Houston Astros..). With the encouragement of his father Charles he continued working on his baseball talents, eventually making the Fresno High varsity baseball team in his senior year from the junior varsity. At the time, it wasn't evident that would ascend to MLB, such as other pitchers from Fresno at the time like Dick Ellsworth('58 FHS), who pitched for the Chicago Cubs, Dick Selma( also graduated during this time from Fresno High& pitched for several MLB teams as well as Jim Maloney, a MLB HOF for the Cincinnati Red Legs( I had the blessed opportunity to interview Mr Maloney on a couple occasions for underwriting investigation this for insurance when he movedback to the Fresno area after he retired when I was employed by Equifax Services) Tom Seaver didn't really blossom as a pitcher to became known as the major leagues prospect until he was coach that Fresno City College by Hans Wiedenhofer and a famous baseball coach in transferring to USC. The lesson learned is be patiently supporting your children and their athletic endeavors with good baseball coaches from college when they become older. After retirement by his MLB and Connor bullet cheese mints has a 300 win plus picture, strike out records and other statistics, he had a blessed later baseball commentary career with other business interest. He married is early school sweetheart and was recognized and visit Fresno in the early 2000"s and having a portion of North Echo Avenue north of McKinley Avenue to Weldon renamed as Tom Seaver Lane which runs by his Fresno High school almamater by the campus on the west side with the majestic Royce Hall in front. This Fresno hi location was opened in 1921 after Fresno High was moved from downtown Fresno Chris started in 1888. My Uncle Charles Innis , my grandmothers youngest brother was in the first graduating class after this location opened in 1921.

I was just cleaning out some drawers in my sports room n found a nice picture of him I took at a sports dinner. Also just watched a day before he died the 68 AS game n struck out The Mick on 3 pitches!!!

Professional in everything he did. A Pro. One in a million. Made it look so easy.

The heroes of my youth (b.1961) are slowly going away and I'm powerless to stop it. Mickey Mantle, Tom Seaver, Ernie Banks... Never was a Mets fan, but I will always be a Tom Seaver fan. . RIP, heroes.

I had the privilege of meeting Tom Seaver back in 1993 at my place of employment. He was signing decorative plates with his likeness for every team he played for. I received an autographed ceramic baseball card for assisting in the activity. I still have it to this day. My condolences to his family, friends and acquaintances. RIP Tom Terrific. A high school classmate of mine attended that same game and noted how boring it was to watch because Tom's pitching was so precise that it was like watching a machine.

DDEENY I’m sorry your friend was bored. I was in awe, and shocked when I looked up and it was top of the 9th. But your friend’s description was spot on. A machine of incredible precision. Later in life I watched Chris Evert mow down an opponent in a 45 minute match. Apex athletes are incredible to watch.

@@michaelsegriff3362 I remember listening to John Maine's performance announced over WFAN in the next-to-last game of the ill-fated 2007 Mets season against the Marlins that kept the Mets' pennant hopes alive to see another day, when he hit an incredible groove and was announced, STRIKE ONE, STRIKE TWO, STRIKE THREE! It reminded me of hearing Seaver's typical performances. I also remember hearing Tom's last start of the 1974 season after he'd been successfully treated and finally recovered fully from the pinched sciatica that had placed him on the disabled list for the first time at about mid-season. In the late innings he hit the same strikeout groove and mowed down the Phillies en route to a complete game, 4-hit, 2-1 victory, also setting the record for most consecutive seasons with 200+ strikeouts. Commenting post-game and referring to Tom's recovery and remarkable performance unhampered by his former injury, Mets announcer Bob Murphy said that "Tom let it all hang out". Tom was never the beneficiary of reliable run support from the Mets and he would have otherwise won a lot more decisions. I remember listening to the game that he lost a no-hitter with 2 outs in the 9th inning against the Cubs in Chicago in 1975, a game that the Mets eventually lost 1-0 in 11 innings, 10 pitched by Tom surrendering only 3 hits. In Tom's next start after his "imperfect" 07/09/1969 1-hitter against the Cubs at Shea, all he did was lose a complete game, 5-hit 1-0 decision against the same Cubs at Chicago. The 1st place Cubs had scored only one run in 17 consecutive innings against Tom. Tom's low-scoring loses with the Mets speak as much as his victories to his greatness. In the day with a 4-man starting pitching rotation together with the custom of statring pitchers allowed to remain in games until their lead was lost, plus the fact that Tom was a power, strikout pitcher meant that Tom threw an enormous amount of pitches during a season and only his devotion to physical conditioning and perfected mechanics allowed him a career with limited arm trouble. He was truly The Franchise.

DDEENY John Maine saved our butts, to live for another day, with the most dominant performance of his life. I knew we’d win the next day. Alas...I also knew we were going to the Series when Endy Chavez made “the catch” in 2006. I was at Shea and sitting high above the left field fence. Alas... And you being a devoted fan, I wouldn’t even test you with the names Jimmy Qualls and “Tarzan” Joe Wallis. Child’s play for you! 😝

That catch rivals Ron Swoboda's in Game 4 of the '69 Series. Each were equally critical. Too bad that the Mets lost the '06 NCLS to the Cardinals because Chavez' catch became basically lost in history rather than historically celebrated for the spectacle that it was, like Swoboda, Mays, Gionfriddo and Amoros. Qualls and Wallis were the 2 no-name Cub players who broke up Seaver's 2 no-hitters, each in the 9th inning. Recommended reading: THE YEAR THE METS LOST LAST PLACE by Paul D. What a comedown it must have been after Qualls' hit. Tom also told of the stiffness in his right shoulder that he felt while warming up before that game and he had trouble getting loose. The adrenaline masked the stiffness during that game but the stiffness persisted for some time afterwards and Tom was genuinely fearful that it could end his career. Thankfully the stiffness eventually went away and the rest is history. Thanks and stay safe.

Best memories of Tom are actually off the field -- on Kiner's Korner after a win, soaked with sweat, laughing, and talking about the game. But to how great he was... every Mets homegrown pitcher will be compared to Seaver and how they measure up. deGrom is great, but can he do it for 10+ years.

As a Yankee fan, I rooted for Seaver and the Mets back in ‘69. Modern day pitchers can’t compare. Will always remember his 300th win on Phil Rizz Day. RIP

From the time I remember watching baseball till I was 30 years old Tom Seaver was always there for me. Looking forward to his next start was just part of life. He was my hero while growing up in New York. He was the rare combination competitive excellence and class. I still have my tickets stubs to game 4 of the 1969 series. He went all ten for the win. Thank you Tom Seaver for a life well lived and for enriching all of our lives.
