It was always poetic how Ulquiorra, the aspect of Emptiness, was defeated not only by Ichigo, but by Ichigo and Orihime. Orihime is pretty much the cardinal opposite of everything Ulquiorra always was, she was always unconditionally kind and emotional and that just threw him off completely. Then comes Ichigo, a personification of nothing but duty and willing to self-sacrifice to protect others around him. It makes all the more sense as to why Ulquiorra never killed them both, even when he killed Ichigo the first time he say "if you survive this, go away" showing that some part of him legitimately hoped Ichigo would survive specially because he could've just completely incinerated his body to make sure Ichigo was dead but chose not to. Same with Orihime, the moment she stopped being a priority for Aizen Ulquiorra could easily kill her for defying him but instead was hellbent of destroying their will and winning the philosophical battle. Both Ichigo and Orihime defeatead Ulquiorra together by finally making him understand humanity

This reminds me of Meruem for hunterxhunter like the same sadness I felt watching both of them die. This is what makes me love both of their characters so much, how curious they were regarding humans they eventually grew to have feelings.

Ulquiorra's backstory was revealed to us in the Third Bleach Databook "Umasked". In it we see that Ulquiorra comes from a clan of Hollows that's pressed and forms/is born at the bottom of a crater. All those from his clan are all black and possess mouths, Ulquiorra was born all white and possessed no mouth, in appearance close to his first Resurreccion form. Not only that Ulquiorra possessed no sensations, he could not hear, smell, or feel a sensation of touch and all those that follow these sensations, and without possessing a mouth he also could not taste or even eat, he didn't even possess the appetite that Hollows are infamous for. Ulquiorra still possessed his eyes though, and with them his sight, tying into Ulquiorra telling Orihime that if he can't see something then it doesn't exist. But he was so different from others of his clan of Hollows that the others tried to eat him, and he was forced to kill them instead. Ulquiorra may not have possessed any of the sensations that connect him to reality other than sight, he still possessed human emotions and those could experience all of this as if a human would fear, confusion, etc. After he kills the other members of his clan, he wanders off for some unspecified amount of time eventually coming across a giant Hueco Mundo Tree, those trees we saw earlier in the arc that are basically just minerals in the form of trees, Ulquiorra was entranced by it because he felt relatable to it, not having any meaning to exist, unknown why it even exists at all. He attempts to merge with the tree, in doing so chipping at his Hollow mask turning him into an Arrancar in the process, and at the end of it feeling a strong sense of satisfaction/contentment just to stay there. A quote from Ulquiorra during this chapter describes how everything that Ulquiorra doesn't see doesn't exist to him, as he has no other way of interacting with it outside of seeing it, and that even the things that reflect across his eyes, the things he can see, hold absolutely no meaning to him either. For the most part I think I told this pretty well, I may be missing some things, but I'm not sure. And actually, Ulquiorra's Segunda Entapa form (2nd release) may have been close to the appearance of the other members of his clan, and this form has actually been said to represent Ulquiorra's second despair. Hence, why when he releases it he says to show Ichigo "true despair".

That wasnt his clan, ulquiorra was different because he was born a Vasto Lorde, not an adjuchas like every other hollow in las noches (espadas 1-4 were vasto lordes before becoming arrancars). He didnt feel the hunger because vasto lordes dont need to eat because they dont de- evolve like adjuchas, they just born like that.

Ulquiorra and Ichigo...The hollow who became more human...the human who became more hollow...

How i see it, Ichigo was in full hollow form (or at least as much of a hollow a non hollow can be) not in shinigami form... Hollows have high regeneration, meaning the hole he had while in hollow form was his actual hole as a hollow... When he turned back to human/shinigami that hollow hole got patched as part of the transformation, not as healing... Ulquiorra was the one who explained how arrancars mostly lost that regeneration when they left being full hollows and went to being arrancars... ichigo was the opposite...

He was a Vasto Lorde. Highest form a Menos Hollow can reach. Might as well be Super Hollows. Which means that it wasn't Ichigo at all. It was his inner Hollow that stepped in to protect Orihime.

Ulquiorra's end made me tear up

Remember when Ichigo met Nel she said something about single digits. And Ulquiorra said something about Yammy not beating them at "that" level.

Orehime is the heart and ichigo was her blade and her heart. ulquiorra was trying to crush that heart but he couldn’t and ulquiorra did something uncharacteristically stopping hollow ichigo from killing uryu granting orehime request

my only sadness with Ulquiorra's passing is that he was not slain by Ichigo's Zanpacto and that means his soul was not cleansed and he perishes with no way to be reborn at the percipice of finally understanding the concept of heart.

Apparently only Quincies completely completely destroy/obliterate the souls of Hollows, if a Hollow isn’t killed by a Soul Reaper sword or obliterated by a Quincy, they basically just skip being sent to Soul Society (or Hell) with their memories intact and instead just directly reincarnate as a new blank soul (usually in the Human world but also apparently sometimes in SS since original souls can sometimes be born in SS). Though Ulquiorra’s unique origins do make me wonder if his soul works different than others.

@@TheoVorster Honestly with how bizarre of a case Ulquiorra was I doubt he even had a "soul". Normally all hollows are deceased human spirits that have gone bad but Ulquiorra was never human, hence why he was born out of sand in a dark pit, already a vasto lorde, as opposed to any other hollow (which go through regular hollow evolution). Him not having a soul also explains why he was incapable of understanding such a concept as the human "heart" nearly until his death. Any hollow would be able to understand such a concept, as well as have emotions, whether that be greed, anger, etc. while Ulquiorra never had any such thing. The most likely case scenario is that he returned to dust, like how he was born.

Congratulations on being the first Bleach fans in history to call the Cero Espada twist "good writing" on your first viewing! Fandom was a little miffed at that years ago...and today...not me anymore, though. It is Good Writing. Also, he's a Kaiju. Yammyzilla, we call him (note how he fires his Cero from his mouth in a very familiar fashion).

Regarding Ulquiorras feelings towards Orihime.. actually in the manga theres a poem that kubo wrote and its Ulquiorras perspective( if you read the manga Kubo always do poems and it is always dedicated on one characters pov) and its Titled The Lust... This is the poem: I envy because of the heart I gutton becuase of the heart I covet because of the heart I am prideful because of the heart I slot because of the heart I rage because of the heart Because of the heart I LUST EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU! through this poem itself Kubo confirmed that Ulquiorra really did developed "romantic feelings" towards Orihime. Not just purely curiousity towards her being a human. Honestly when i first read the poem my heart shutters even more Knowing that he really developed those Kind of feelings to Orihime.. Especially that very last line.. The I lust everything about you! like man this poem is really deep and it makes more great impact to Ulquiorras already interesting character.... and it kinda made more sad... Sorry for my grammar, english is not my native language so..

I always loved the titles that Kubo comes up with for his chapters, like Ulquiorra vs Ichigo is The Lust and Ulquiorra looking like a bat or kinda like an incubus which is a male version of succubus. Incubi and succubi are demons of lust and they would prey on the opposite sex, succubi with men, and incubi with women. So Ulquiorra the incubus lures Orihime away from the human world and traps her and her heart in hueco mundo. The themes, imagery, etc they go deep, it's all very aesthetically poetic. Kubo is such an amazingly talented and subtle poet. It's why I love Bleach so much.

His soul is like a broken empty man, who has no meaning in life, what he needed was a game changer, and right then he found it, a woman that could be his pillar of reason to exist, a love of his life. Someone who can accompany him, to support him, to not fear him, not run away, but accept him as who he is fully, despite being someone fully abnormal to his own normal realm, which makes him even more abnormal to other realms.

Most people hate the Yammy reveal as Espada 0, so it's kinda interesting that you guys are on board with it.

I just want to point out something that I've noticed in past episodes up to this one ... Have you ever thought how strange it was that each time Ichigo got healed, his clothes also reformed ? At the end of his hollow state, his wounds were fully healed... Yet his shinigami uniform did not repair itself this time ?

I believe Ichigo turning into his Vasto Lorde form counts as a Resurreccion, and arrancars auto-heal when they use this. In Orihime's case, it reverses everything with the inclusion of his damaged clothes.

Funny you should mention this. Ichigo and Unohana talk about this exact thing a few episodes later. Basically, his clothes are a part of his bankai and are restored when his spiritual pressure is restored. Orihime only healed his wounds this time and didnt restore his spiritual pressure cuz Uryu's injuries took priority.

Its actually a debate of who is the actual strongest Espada, some say is Coyote Stark who is number 1, other says is Ulquiorra because he is the only one who have a second release, Yammy is number 0 because of how much spiritual pressure he can storage, don’t get me wrong, he is pretty strong and huge, but characters like Ulquiorra(4), Starkk(1) and even Barragan(2) could take him out

Yeah it’s kinda simultaneously funny/frustrating/sad that Kubo never really made it clear who was the strongest Espada among Yammy, Starrk, and Ulquiorra; so that to this day, people are still debating that question. Personally, I am in the camp that views Ulquiorra as the strongest Espada thanks to his Second Stage form (plus Ulquiorra’s Espada tattoo also disappeared when going into his Segunda Etapa). And it just seems the most consistent with the feats/scale of the characters’ fights.

Ulquiora didn't speak for all -humanity- hollonity, he was speaking about himself that he give up strength for healing (high speed regeneration). And through out the whole Arancar saga we were reminded that number 11 above is base on their birth as an Arancar *with* the exception of the above 10 Arancar call Espada (10 swords or something) and Nel her self said that she never heard of 3 digit arancar when Donpanini dude debut, and the face that 10 is technically 2 digit... You see what I'm saying? It's a foreshadowing right in our face all along.

Yep zero is the strongest... probably just in terms of raw power but it is difficult to compare... and considering that is from Aizen's numbering... Ulqiorra did say Aizen never saw his second release... so we have no idea where he ranked after transforming...

So some interesting trivia about Ulquiorra, in the third Bleach Character Book Tite Kubo created a bonus chapter about Ulquiorra, and it revealed that Ulquiorra wasn’t ever a former human, he actually came into existence as a Vasto Lorde from the very beginning. So it makes me wonder if Ulquiorra even qualifies for having a “human soul” to be purified and sent to Soul Society (or Hell if the human soul was evil in life). If he doesn’t (and he just dissipates like when a Quincy kills a Hollow) it kinda adds further pathos to how his Espada Aspect of Death was Nihilism/Emptiness. Also Yammy being the 0 Espada caused so much debate with the Bleach fandom, to this day there are still debates and disagreements over who among Yammy Espada 0, Starrk Espada 1, or Ulquiorra Espada 4 is the actual strongest Espada, as Kubo never really made it super clear. Personally, I am in the camp that Ulquiorra’s Segunda Etapa being a secret to even Aizen implies that Ulquiorra was actually the strongest of the Espada since no other Espada has ever achieved the second stage level (plus Ulquiorra’s Espada tattoo also disappeared when going into his Segunda Etapa).

@@filipeoliveiraladislau4533 Reiryoku (which literally translates to “spiritual power”) actually, not Reiatsu (“spiritual pressure”), and I think it’s understandable why many people will often default on conflating “most Reiryoku” with being the strongest/most powerful (even if it’s not always that clear cut). And as others have mentioned Ulquiorra’s Segunda Etapa being unknown to even Aizen casts some understandable doubt as to whether Aizen’s ranking/ordering of the Espada was truly accurate.

Yamy is like gas truck in gas capacity buts its not gonna gain any race prize. that said he can sustain a absurd spiritual pressure by a large amount of time and is basically impossible to be put down once released.(Ulquiorra probably would inflict fatal damage with his highly condensed lanças del relampar. starkand Baraggan wold probably outlast him be being more "economic")

Huh. White the hollow has been a part of Ichigo since be was born and he straight up said "I will take control if I have the opportunity" back in the Vizoreds training. He did the same when Ichigo was fighting Byakuya remember? The hollow took control there too. Coming back from the dead was a result of the hollow instant regeneration just like Ulquiorra said in the last ep. That has all being explained and foreshadowed earlier in the show
