If you staggered your blocks you could nail them straight through the joists. And buy doing so your nails would be true and straight instead of toe nailed. Other than that the build looks great should be a very strong building when complete.

Had to chuckle at your daughter repeatedly telling you, "I KNOW." I don't know why parents even bother to warn them when they clearly already know literally everything. Great progress on the build!

In the event you've not considered it yet, layout your plumbing ASAP. The last thing you want happening to that beautiful floor system is your plumber cutting a joist to accommodate a drain for a toilet or tub/shower. It's much easier to header off if necessary now rather than later. Great job so far. 'Looking forward to following the remainder of the build!

I’m not a carpenter but decided to take on a similar project because it was my own house. My joists were sitting on block so I decided to cut all the noggins first, and to use the noggin as the spacer around the perimeter when fitting each joist. For the mid span noggins, it wasn’t quite as simple. I realised that with the twists of the joists it’s not always practical to cut the noggins in advance. At the end of the day I realised its a laborious process to get it right. It’s not some thing you can just rush through if you want good work, so hats off for putting the time in to measure them all. 👍

I realize it's too late now, but you made that into an excessively long and arduous process. 1st, the reason you stagger, is to be able to end nail into the blocking. 2nd is that you never run your blocking sequentially as that is a recipe for cumulative error. What you do is count your number of bays and cut half that number of mathematical blocks. In your case, 14-1/2". Then place all those blocks on the same side of the line, in every other bay. Any grow error will be limited to about 1/16", and contained to one bay. THEN you go back and measure the space at the top edge AND to bottom edge and cut the "custom" block to the SMALLER of those two measurements. By cutting to the smaller dimension, you will never "grow" an error. I have been a rough carpenter, finish carpenter, drywall hanger, drywall finisher, roofer, window installer, door hanger, flooring installer, ceiling installer (and a few other trades as well), and most notably a project manager for both residential and commercial construction for more than half of my 46 years in the working world. I don't mean to brag, but I have picked up a few things along the way, and I don't mind sharing. Love the channel, and love the outtakes! Been watching, and subscribed since the solar panels.

Question, would you ever lay subfloor first so you could straighten joist with plywood then add blocking later. Then this could maybe be a rainy day project.

@@Knotrockets You could, but that would increase the level of difficulty (and accuracy) substantially. You snap a line to layout your course. When you later come back through to measure your custom cut blocks, you'll be looking down from above, (daylight side). And your measurement is done as a straight stick read. If you put your subfloor on first, your measurement is from below (shadow side), and your second measurement (against the subfloor) would need to be a 'roll tape' estimate- causing a loss of accuracy. Also, by blocking 1st, you can hit the blocking with subfloor adhesive as you go for A) more stiffness an B) less squeak potential.

If you are going to toe nail all the blocking instead of end grain nailing, why do you offset every other block? In the future plumb down at each end and snap a line across the bottoms of the joists and save yourself all the fiddling with the square on each board.

Around the 7:30 mark, getting to watch the timelapse of you working with the sky in the background - it definitely paints a nice picture of the beautiful sunrise/sunsets in your future home!!

with all the up and down you guys do I'd put in a dumbwaiter now for all your canning stuff! Great show!

Very neat and pretty, BUT I found myself confused as to why you STAGGERED the blocking and DID NOT face nail them through the joists instead of TOE NAILING them. Over time you may have a higher chance experiencing squeaks in the floor with toe nailing the blocking rather than face nailing.

Lol!! seeing Jeremy poking his head up in fast motion reminded me of the game whack a mole. Jaime I was right there with you! I gasped when Ilaria was backing up!!! Looking good guys!

Too late, but let me offer some suggestions: If you're worried about propagating errors across the joists, work from the outside in (outside of the scaffold in...) Instead of measuring each side one at a time, then going to the other side of the same joist bay, get up top and measure all of 'em, writing the measurement on the inside of the ledger. Then, a glance across gets you the correct measurement without going up and down a ladder. You're using your partner poorly. She can be doing the above measurements while you install. It takes 20 seconds to cut a block. She waits in between for a long time for the next measurement to be called out to her. She can cut a half dozen blocks ahead so you don't have to get off the scaffold at all. Stagger the blocks on either side of the centerline enough so you can end-nail into them from the joist instead of toenailing all of 'em.

Great job, y'all!! Yay! Big task checked off the list. Woo hoo! I so completely enjoy bloopers and I really needed a laugh right this moment in time so thank you for that!!! 🤣

Nice job! Y'all work really well together😊 Once the floors are done everything will move along fast. It took a contractor and crew 3 months to remove all of our flooring (from a mold issue) and replace 2 subfloors, then the decorative wood. I believe we would have rather of built a new home!

Instead of placing the blocking exactly in the center Did you consider installing them at an 8 foot increment that would give you an additional line of edge nailing on the 4 x 8 sheet of plywood subfloor?

We usually use T&G for flooring, or some will overlay a 1/2'' and break the seams which really makes for a stiff floor.

To much ladder work. You could could put down the first row of plywood then you have a runway to work from above. Your doing great work it's just that your doing it the hard way. Feel free to ask me anything I have been building houses for 30 years. ICF buildings, stick frame, panel homes,pole barns, metal frames, I keep my job because I get shit done.

SHORTCUT - first nail down a stringer from above to space out the joist perfectly. This way they don't move on you. You will also have perfect placement for your blocks. Remove the stringer afterwards.

We don't use wheels but do cut V's in the side for venting. 4 V's along in the lower section and 4 in the middle. Once cut, just bang the V in a little. Burns like crazy.

With the sub floor on you will have a massive workshop, shelter and store area for the rest of the build. Should make life easier.

That only works if all the joist were exactly the same thickness and all the end spacing was exactly on 16" centers. Measuring the spacing at both ends and splitting the difference is the way to go.

I see cutting a window in the basement in your future. That view and light is too gorgeous for a closed studio.

Add clue and silicone now to all the joist, corners and so on, now ,while you can see them. You don't want your floor bounce and squeak like mad ,it's a pain in the butt. It my not bounce and squeak for the first few years ,remember the wood drys and settles over years.

He is right. When you backfill the majority of the weight /pressure is at the base of the wall which until the slab is poured isn't braced.
