    Always look forward to your updates. Curious, if anyone has looked at any recent heat maps, since lava was detected not too far under Natthagi and that was the original place everyone was watching. The fissure could still move, as it has over the last couple of months.

  • @JustIcelandic

    Yes it could still move but I have the feeling the they expect it to move north rather than back under Nátthagi Valley, judging from earthquake activity..but then....since we are here, anything could happen...

It shows you're deeply dedicated and that you truly love your work and Iceland as well... i don't often have time for a comment, but I felt you deserved a thank you..... eventhough it comes from some stranger who, like you loves everything volcanic, but unlike you can hardly pronounce anything Icelandic. Make a "small valley" under the road? Do you know how difficult that would be? The road is by the sea, so there won't be enough height for a ditch of adequate size, esp considering the road still needs to support itself. Also, lava layers onto itself as it keeps flowing. It'll eventually reach the height of the road anyways.

    @@Unusualalex he probably meant to make a small valley to the sea. If there is a hot spot near by (which is how Iceland formed), that volcano lava, coupled with the lava formations from the hot spot under the sea would make for a larger country. That makes complete sense. Your explanation is only accounting for lava pooling off the land and into the water...easy mistake to make. Hot spots are volcanos under the water which build up and build up, Hawaii is getting a new island because of this.

    What about a set of 'pre-cast' concrete tunnels? One for the road and one for the telecom lines. Bring them in as 5 to 15 meter sections on trucks, heavy machinery can prep the base, and the sections can be moved into place with a crane. Have the ends of the tunnel well outside the area where the lava is expected to flow. When lava ceases to move in the area, the unneeded tunnel sections can be removed from either end, and the road and telecom lines are still usable and able to be maintained at a normal level.

    Thank you! Now I have a question……Why didn’t your ancestors settle in the eastern part of Iceland? Settlements there would have been closer to Norway and Denmark. Did they know they were settling in the most geologically unstable area?

  • @stuartschaffner9744

    @stuartschaffner9744

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Eastwind, very perceptive. I hope you get some answers as I have wondered about these issues a lot. If nobody with real expertise answers, let me suggest a few things to ponder. First, our modern understanding of places like Iceland stems from the 1970's, when the idea of plate tectonics went from radical theory to accepted hypothesis. It's amazing how recent most of our modern view of geology is. Second, while I am sure that there are differences, the islands of Hawaii are formed by very similar processes: a stable volcanic plume under the surface of an ocean, producing islands that move away from the plume over millions of years. A lot of the population of Hawaii is near the southern end of the chain. Mauna Loa is an active shield volcano and Hilo is directly in the path of some geologically recent lava flows. You might look at why these parts of the island chain are the most populated. I believe that part of it is that the surfaces of recent lava flows are good for agriculture. In contrast, most of Kauai in the north is so deeply eroded that it is accessible mostly by helicopter. Notice that Grindavik, an Icelandic fishing port, is on a harbor that was formed by recent lava flows into the ocean. I suspect that safe harbors in Iceland are few and far between, and are mostly formed by recent volcanic activity.

    Climate. Due to prevailing winds coming off the warmer Gulf stream, the weather in the South West of the country is a milder than over to the East. When your winter is 6 months long & the growing season for crops is so short, even a tiny difference in temperature for the warmer is hugely important!

    @@alexfrance500 , fascinating. Hawaii in this aspect would be a bad analogue since it is so far south that the prevailing winds are the easterly trade winds. This means that the eastern slopes are wet and good for growing crops while the western areas are often desert like. I am presuming that the prevailing winds over Iceland are westerly like in Canada. There's also the matter of all the big glaciers in the interior southeast. From what you said, it sounds like the glaciers are there because the winds are colder rather than the other way around. I really don't know. I am more asking questions than trying to give definitive answers. What a fascinating place Iceland is!

    There is more relatively low ground around Reykjavik than almost anywhere else in Iceland with the potential for agriculture, though how they prevented their crops from being blown out of the ground by the SW’ly winds is more problematical.

    I find your videos so interesting and informative. In amongst the many gigabytes of (highly addictive) Lava Porn, it's great to get an authentic feel for the social and structural impact these eruptions have on the Icelandic people who, over hundreds of years, have mastered the art of living side-by-side with the most awesome, overwhelming geological events - the creation of new land.

    Really nice explanation of "What? and why?". Gives better 3D view on situation and what could come into future. Despite living in far away country far far away from any dangers (from nature side), I *love* following volcanic stuff, specially with local eyes that sees things for real (without using too many "huge, massive, terrible" words everywhere - unless they really are necessary ofcourse)

    Thanks for this very informative update! It seems difficult to prevent the south coast road to be cut in a near future if the eruption does not stop within a couple of months. A bridge over the lava flow or a tunnel under it would be very expensive and may be not a good idea. Would be a car ferry option worth studying, for example from Grindavík to Þorlákshöfn? By the way, does there exist a safe coastal harbour between these both coastal cities, so that the ferry trip could be made shorter?

    An excellent video. I have special interest in the PEHD cable protection pipe as we produce such ones. I have learned that they now bore them through the valley by directional horizontal drilling to protect them further. Deeper down the heat may not affect the cable protection pipe with the fiber inside (LJÓSLEIÐARINN) Maybe a video addressing this this matter? Thank you for keeping curious souls informed. You have such a wonderful, yet quite different country up there in the north Atlantic!
