Physics determines that only 10% of an iceberg is visible above the water, because the density of ice is 10% lower than salt water.

The warmer surface water tends to melt into the ice at the surface. Often then, the buoyancy of the ice below the surface will cause a crack and it float upwards, rather that the weight of ice above the overhang crack and fall downwards. Think of the iceberg like giant letters db with just the top of the stalks above water.
