Lake St. Clair use to be like that in the 60's and 70's till they started using gill nets on the Canadian side. 12 13's were common and it was no limit. Then 90's came and DNR puts a limit on of 50 per day. Last year they dropped it to 25 per day which really sucks. Most days you go out and catch 4 to 6" dinks. Now you have to wait for the last ice to do any good. 3 of the last 5 winters around here we've had no ice on the lake only some canals. And there's no ice as of Jan 5TH 2020 and calling for 40's and 50's by the end of the week. And our president says there is no Global warming LOL. He doesn't go ice fishing so he doesn't care.

Most of those "sufficated fish" would swim away hours after sitting on the ice or flop around in your sink at home. Sometimes I'll release some smaller ones I have on the ice and only keep some of the bigger ones and 9 times out of 10 they'll swim away perfectly fine. Some of you maybe should just feed the fish and not try to catch them, it's much kinder and gentler.

The downside with Perches is that they are so friggin brittle in their mouth, you often loose them before you got them, must you lift them on the line ;). Lucky for them tough, for the wound heals soon and they live. The hook often never get a good grip that is. Their mouth is a bit like an accordion. Tripple-hook helps a lot though. If the hook glides towards the mouth-angle, it tears and they come loose. If they get hooked properly in one of the yaws, they are caught for good, however not allways the case :) I have a place to fish this kind from a bridge, I drop most of them when they twitch, for I have to use a special lure wich is not so effective in the hooking..."balanspirk" Summer-time though, different. More lively. Like they can imagine the frying-pan :) Trout almost allways gets hooked properly if you only sharpen them properly. I can also release fish and I do it nicely, so don't whine about them lying on the ice, waiting to become food, so backwards...
