Ice Fishing BIG Walleyes | Overnight on Lake Winnipeg in a Yetti Wheelhouse

Спорт

Three nights on Lake Winnipeg (AKA Big Windy) chasin' big greenback walleyes with my good buddy Brett McComas (Mr. Target Walleye). Lot of big fish action and some great Livescope footage. Enjoy!
Special thanks to Kris Gaune (gaunefishin.ca/) for hosting us in the fancy Yetti fish house and putting us on a sweet bite!

Have traveled to Lake Winnipeg many times starting 20+ years ago and I really don't know where to start but you're spending a lot of time and money with hopes of catching something really special. In my experience you have to be very mobile. You're spending a lot of precious time and money to make the trip. I, personally, would absolutely not lug a massive fish house up there. I've been up there when you had to have two extensions on your auger to get through the ice. If you're extremely lucky, you'll have a year where you can get around with a properly equipped 4X4 pickup but many years we would not have been able to fish without a snowmobile or tracked quad. A decent two up snowmobile with a covered pull behind sled that attaches to your sled with a static coupler and a rack for your auger gives you the ability to be constantly on the move until you start to locate pods of huge fish. You'll know that you're on them when everyone in your party is icing giants which sometimes take hours or even days to locate. If you're catching 2-7 pounders, move on, you can catch them at home. Plan on experiencing busted equipment and horrible weather conditions, I could go on and on including one year when we had a pressure ridge form out from the access during the day while we were out on the lake forcing us to drive many miles across the lake to another access point where we were very, very lucky to get off the lake. That was a decent fish in the video, when you're with a group of 3 or 4 guys and you're all putting fish like that on the ice you'll have experienced fishing nirvana. Your group should be loosely spread out and leapfrog around once someone gets a decent fish, like 50-100 yards until you really get them dialed in. To fish it right is truly exhausting as I get quite a bit older I have to be honest with myself and not attempt it on a year without optimal weather and ice conditions. Best of luck to everyone, we've made a lot of friends up there over the years, mostly friendly and helpful Canadians some of which we, in turn, helped out. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with sitting in a fish house drinking beer and eating deer sausage, just not here imho (well, drinking beer on the ice is illegal in Canada fyi).

Believe it or not, we actually ended up out producing many of the other parties we spoke to on those particular days, which I would never have guessed. It helped that the bite was very tough during that three day window. But it was very interesting to see the line of folks leaving the lake in the evening, then the fish would start going nuts about 30 minutes later. I was very surprised by the night bite out there. I didn’t put all the fish we caught into the video, but the bite was very good during the key morning/evening windows. We would have had a lot better results during the day if we had been mobile of course! Regardless, I know we didn’t experience the absolute best of the best that Winnipeg has to offer.
