Ice Baths, Handcuffs, Starvation: Victim's Brother Recalls Torture

#BREAKING: Key witness Paul Ferguson, victim Timothy Ferguson's older brother, said his mother, Shanda Vander Ark, forced him to lock up Timothy's food, feed him bread soaked in hot sauce, keep him from taking his medicine, and give him ice baths. Timothy, who had special needs, was handcuffed and slept in a closet.

This is what I think about too. You never know what is happening behind closed doors. It could be happening at your neighbors, in your neighborhood, in your town and no one would know until the ultimate tragedy happens and the police get involved. It kills me to think that there’s children suffering right now. About 10 minutes from me AJ Freund was murdered by his disgusting birth giver and his sperm donor took his tiny body and buried him in a field in the next town over before reporting him missing. No one knew what was happening. DCFS was notified by the local ER doctor because he had huge bruises and DCFS dropped the ball. One of those workers was just convicted. One was not.

Nah, he was an adult who had a job. He's using words like reiterate, & induce. He says he knew the child didn't like eating things with hot sauce and refused to pour hot sauce on the kids genitals ( he wore a diaper and prob had sores and rashes).... All signs that he knew what he was doing was dead wrong. Sounds like this abuse didn't start until the special needs kid came to live w/them and after the step father had the stroke. They say the kid was chubby when he came to live with them. This isn't some long standing abuse. This is them not being able to handle the child with special needs. Think of how many teens get charged as adults for their crimes this guy was an actual adult yet y'all wanna treat him like a child. He knew it was dead wrong to do what he was doing he knew it was a form of punishment/discipline I have no sympathy for this child abuser.

Simply repeating “big words” doesn’t mean that he can understand them. He wasn’t able to answer very simple questions unless they were REPHRASED (that would be the appropriate word to use, reiterate means to repeat; rephrase means to say in another way). This kid has been just as victimized as his brother who died. I have nothing but empathy for him. The person you should detest is the monster sitting in the defendants seat. This kid needs therapy in a locked in environment until he has built skills to live in a group home, and then slowly moved to the outside world. All he is guilty of is trying to not get his mother’s attention and suffer her wrath too.

@@user-nq1ok8cz6snah, i wouldn’t say that’s normal. Normal is protecting your younger sibling. I’m speaking as someone who was abused and traumatized, by a parent and step-parent, and who has diagnosed c-ptsd. I stood up for my younger brother (2.5 years younger) when I was much younger than Paul (starting around the age of 8/9) MANY times. I stood up for him against physical violence and at the threat of, and execution of, other extreme punishments (not nearly as extreme as Timothy had to endure however). I’m also diagnosed with ASD (high functioning) so mental disorders aren’t an excuse either, as I’ve seen other commenters use that alongside Paul being afraid himself. I’d fight my parent(s) to the death before I allowed even a fraction of this torture to take place, let alone participate in it. No one’s trauma/ reaction to trauma is the same so ofc my experiences don’t define everyone else’s, but it’s a false narrative that fear overrides love/ morals, or is an excuse to behave so cruelly. Paul even said he didn’t love Timothy enough. He feels bad cause he knows it was wrong and he should have done something sooner, and if he knows it’s wrong, then there’s no excuse for him to not get help or TRY. Even if he was afraid in the moment and that made him complacent, he would have gotten help or tried to if he felt bad and loved his brother.

It is a belief, an idea, it is not an absolute... What you are referring to is "having empathy towards others". That is something completely different. Any person with empathy towards others would indeed not do this, because they don't want to inflict pain on others... And maybe he was afraid of what his mother was capable of. If the parents think their child is being groomed and complain, they can be jailed, fined, have their children abducted by child protective services and then the child can get hormone blockers, and surgery even though they can't drive a car, get a piercing or a tattoo or vote. There is no where safe for kids these days.

It is a simple way of looking at undesirable behavior in people. Imagine if people are just so complex, that we have both desirable and also cruel sides within us. That doesn't mean the act can be justified but we are still human. If we are to find some kind of reconciliation in humanity, maybe we need to start there.

This case reminds me so much of the book “A Boy Called It”. The authors mother chose him to be the main recipient of her sadistic abuse and used his older siblings to also perpetuate abuse against him because they feared for themselves and the mother always manipulated them to believe that their younger brother was bad and deserved everything he was getting. They were abusers but they were manipulated to be abusers by their mother and to a much lesser degree they were also abused by her. They also had no reason to think their mother’s behavior was abnormal. Truly a sickening story of just literal evil torture of a child who couldn’t defend himself.

She coerced, bullied, and brainwashed him. She was always watching. She forced this kid to torture his brother, while wanting him to think she was always watching. This whole thing makes me so mad. Surely he had interactions with co workers and managers that must have been friendly and relatively normal. I don’t doubt his disgusting mother had a negative impact on him, however this guy had a cell phone, held a job, had the ability to be online, got rides from co workers, and he very clearly knows right from wrong. I don’t for a second believe that his “terror’ and “fear” of his mother overtook his discretion of right and wrong. I’ve listened to jail calls of his, and read all evidence and listened to the interview/interrogation. This guy is not an innocent bystander. He is just as guilty as she is. He deserves the maximum punishment. This case is so so sad. Rest in forever peace to sweet Timothy.

You probably didn't live in the household run by a violent narcissist. I told no one about what happened to me and my siblings growing up until I was in my mid 20s going through therapy. It wasn't until I found the right therapist in my 30s that I ever actually explained to degree of what happened. The level to which you are reminded that no one will believe you, that you will have nowhere to go if something happens to the parent, the amount that you are torn down mentally you don't have the willpower to even stand up for yourself. It's a constant autopilot. You get reminded that you should be thankful for what you have, that you won't have it better anywhere else, and this is just the psychological toll. The last time I remembered trying to tell someone when I was a kid, I'll never forget one specific bruise I came away with. That was when I knew it wasn't worth fighting. Year after year after year, it breaks you. I am 40, I've been on medication and in therapy for 15 yrs and I still struggle to trust others. When those who are supposed to be biologically programmed to love you don't, and you are constantly bombarded with the world talking about how awesome it is to have a loving family, it must be me. It's my fault this happened so you desperately try anything and everything to just convince them that you are worthy of love.

Paul might be 'a' victim, but he's sure as hell not THE victim here. A boy is DEAD, and it happened as a direct consequence of Paul's actions, an adult with a job who frequently and enthusiastically texted his mom about wanting to torture and kill Timothy, exchanging conspiracy theories that Timothy was 'faking it', etc. It's outrageous that people are feeling sorry for a child murderer who turned state's witness to avoid a murder charge himself.

The judge was amazing for adding an additional 50 years to her LIFE sentence. How could a mother do this to her children? Including this young man whose now going to suffer extreme trauma and mental illness after all of this. He’s a victim too, he doesn’t deserve a lengthy sentence like her. Maybe 10 or less but within that sentence there has to be forced psychiatric treatment and psychotherapy. My heart goes out to him and that he can heal from this. Im in tears thinking of the mental anguish Timothy went through. I watched my mother torture my sister for years, not at this magnitude. Yet it was traumatic enough for me to continue to have nightmares about it. I always tried to help my sister but was fearful for whatever could happen if I did. I’m not a mother yet, I really hope that in a few years I will be. And when i am I am going to LOVE my child no matter what…because I know the feeling of having a mother who doesn’t show love!

Unless you’ve ever lived with an abusive parent who you feared, no one can fully understand Paul’s involvement. I can almost 100% say that he was abused most of his life. He didn’t dare disobey his mother. For emotional abuse is almost more devastating as physical abuse. I hope this kid gets the help he deserves, and gets no jail time. Counceling hopefully will be sufficient… he had empathy for his brother… he deserves it back. I’m so sorry for what he was forced to do.

Yeah I’m sickened by all the people being ignorant in the comments , it’s not like he gets away with it , he did also do harm and should be held accountable. But context matters, it’s clear that he’s been manipulated and scared of his mother his entire life. I also think he’s a neurodiverse person himself, it’s not shocking she got him to do her dirty work and he did it to please her.

He listens so literally to every word, he’s been so traumatized to get every answer and word right. I went through some home horrors but this guy has so much trauma from his own survival. He’s not a sociopath, he was terrified and his mother gave him reason to believe it’d be him if he wasn’t the one doing it.

And just look at how he reacts when he has a minor error like nodding/shaking his head instead of verbalizing yes/no. Regardless of what has gone on, this is a man who has been severely traumatized by his mother, this is someone who is extremely scared of saying or doing the wrong thing, and this is someone whose behavior has been under surveillance and scrutiny. He has such clear guilt and discomfort for what happened. At the end of the day he never would have done this if he wasn't in this bizarre reality his mother constructed. Wow this video is devastating to watch. And Shaunda is over there just shaking her head in contempt that he isn't smart enough to lie as well as she does. Wow.

He is a monster, he killed his brother as well as his mother, duo from hell.

I feel so bad for even Paul. You can tell he has also been abused and conditioned to starve himself. He was so uncomfortable when talking about the weights and when he described Timothy as being "chubby" when he first arrived he looked over to see the reactions and then had to hug himself basically to calm down. Then when he heard that Timothy was supposedly going on a hunger strike (a lie) you could see the anger in his face that his mother would even think to make that lie. I'm not even 15 minutes in, and I'm shaken, really. I couldn't help but cry when he said he had to sneak the meal that he cooked for fear of getting in trouble. The amount of torture this woman put her children through is so sick and to do this to someone with special needs is even more horrific. I hope this vile woman is only fed bread with hot sauce in prison...
