I have an ICE adventure HD and it has an Bafang 500watt with manual 10 speed. I have removed the 500watt Bafang and the rearwheel. So i have placed an 1000watt rearwheel. This wheel is gives more fun to ride the ICE. Speed is not so important but tourque and fun thats what i like. Keep on going Utah Trikes, greetings from The Netherlands.

Thanks for the comparison of the two types of motor drives. I think I am going to opt for a Bafang 1K mid drive motor for my Greenspeed Magnum XL. I am an amputee and put a lot of effort out with my good right leg. Long rides are not an option for me right now but with the addition of a pedal assist going places will be a great option with electric pedal assist.

@@rango_unchained hi ron, i had my trike converted and have a Bafang direct drive on the front driving the chain. I think i would consider the rear wheel drive as it is a more simple drive and i don't think it puts the strain on the chain like the front drive does. it cost me about $1,500 for my Bafang set up.

You can literally buy a Japanese made 1000cc sportbike for that money. Yet you think the only comparable product to this is a cheap Chinese e-bike? You can get 99.95 of the bike for $3k or less

like the seat and armrests...nice touch. Nuvinci rear hub with harmony auto shift interface, would reduce manufacturing costs with the bafang mid drive, and the few extra ounces of weight would not be noticeable. 11 grand is intolerable, unexplainable, even with the pricey Rohloff hub, however. At that price, I would expect a couple of flexible solar panels over the rider for shade, and battery charging. When’s that coming? Cheers from northern British Columbia!

I have a JC70 trike and I am considering putting a 1500 Watt Hub Motor from Amazon on my trike. I know that it is bigger than is legal here in Canada. BUT! I have my reasons. The investment in a trike is sizable abut there is no insurance for Bicycles of any sort here in Saskatchewan. Ergo, go over the limit so that it has to be licenced as a Moped. By doing that I can then licence it with SGI as a Moped. I will need a Motorcycle Licence to do that, but I have had that since I was a teen and I am in my 70's now. What are your opinions on running with this much power on a bike that is already pretty fast?

Can you get both mid-drive and hub drive for maximum "assist"? ....in a fat quad? ...with suspension and a comfy seat that's good for cornering? Yes, I live near Thompson Pass, Montana where legendary misjudgments have been made by those no-longer with us. ...and regenerative breaking for the 11 mile down hill speed checks. 4 wheel breaking would probably be a smart alternative to the parachute. Optional windscreen tough enough for the emergency use against branches, rocks and wildlife?

Question. Hub motor when turned off or set to 0 assistance do you notice any back EMF... (Back Electro Magnetic Force). It happens on permanent magnetic motors. Its the electric current in a motor that is created when coasting which adds a lot of resistance to coasting and or peddling without power. I have a hub motor on my bike very similar to your hub motor it becomes a lot harder to ride at 0 assist and or no power. Lift the trike. Try simply spinning the hub motor by hand time how long it coasts. Do the same with the mid drive it will coast much longer. Its kind of a large effect. My real question is do you notice the difficulty peddling with a mid drive with zero assist? The mid drive should do better without at freewheel coasting because the motor is disconnected from the drive wheel due to the rear sprocket. given that alone I like the mid drive. How does the mid drive feel with 0 assist? Like when you just need to get home with a dead battery. my bike is actually quite a bit more work. I am beginning to talk myself into a mid drive over hub drive for my velomobile.

if you live / ride hills, the mid-drive is definitely the way to go.. keeping the motor spinning fast keeps the motor cool, and keeps the motor from lugging down. Small front sprockets on Bafang Mid-Drives is the way to go to keep the motor spinning faster.. I use a 30T Lekkie blingring, and a Rohloff Speed Hub 14... And i never spin out.. Always have gears for steep climbs and fast speed on level ground.

The 1000watt bafang mid drive puts out 160 Nms of torque . that's insane , but probably eats your battery up in short order . The great thing about a geared mid drive is you can increase your range and power by , wait for it , PEDALING . 😂 I have a bosch gen 3 cx motor on my cube mtb and try to stay in " Tour " mode , except for super steep hills . i can get about 65 miles out of a 500 watt battery , so pedaling a lot on the bafang will definitely give you some decent range .

I picked up my ICE SprintX last week with the 1000 watt motor (mid drive). Took a ride around Payson near the shop. Again took the trike out at a nice trail on the way back to SLC. The next ride around my home I hit 36 mph on level peddling as fast as gearing would allow. I’m pretty sure the displayed speed is a bit high. Anyway the thing is crazy fast. The sad news is I was hit by a pickup truck about 5 miles from home. I was moving slowly as the light had turned red. I was in a “bike lane” (aren’t we grateful for those white lines the city painted on the road?) The trike is now pretty much a pile of noodles. The boom with the aforementioned motor is one of the only parts undamaged. The display and throttle also seem okay. I’m extremely sore from head to toe. Miraculously no broken bones. High end mips helmet is cracked. Don’t skimp on your helmet kids!!! I’m letting the jury deliberate about the motor when I get a new bike which I believe insurance will pay for in full. More about the motor. You definitely pass everyone on any bike. Hills are just not an issue. The bad news, you really notice the weight gain. The trike no longer feels nimble. If you miscalculated a trip and had to ride unassisted you’d likely have to call for towing. The battery seems to have a short life between charges. Way too early to tell. Battery is close to 9 lbs. can’t guess the weight of the motor but it’s pretty hard to lift up to my Subaru Outback even with battery removed. Depending on body healing time and insurance claim for a new trike, I may consider going to a 250 watt. Experimenting could become very expensive. Utah Trikes is a class act.

Since you asked...I'd go with the hub motor on an HD. Where I'd ride in Niles, MI we don't usually have major hills as you would. Y'all would say, "Hill, what hill?" I'd go with a Pinion on the front. If money was growing on a tree in my yard I'd go with the Pinion P1.18. I just read of a guy with a mid-drive that destroyed a chain and he had a good push/walk and had to call for help when he got to a road. Perhaps all that motor torque killed the chain. On a hub drive, a broken chain won't leave you stranded.

I use this setup on my ti-fly 26. Pinion p 18 with go Swiss hub drive and absolutely love it. On my last tune from a local shop the chain was inspected and showed very low wear as the chain line is straight and torque from assist is not applied to the chain. That said, it would still “leave me stranded” with a broken chain, as it uses torque sensors. And very limited “throttle “ a press and hold walk mode and limited assist for help through a stop light. Never use it, or the reverse feature for that matter. After four years and thousands of miles i can say it was worth the money. Hey,, smokem if you gotem right?

@@dannyslaughter4845 Nice ride. I can't walk like I used to, used to walk many miles a day, now it hurts on my own to walk a block, I'd hate to have to be pushing a completely dead trike. Arthritic feet, ankles, and knees make me not want to be without a back-up if I'm out somewhere. Also, I have a heart issue so I'd not want that strain. I'd want to be sure my motor could get me to a pick-up point at least so I guess that is something I'd have to be sure to check, that the motor could get me somewhere without pedal input.

Also, this is an expensive version, there are many out there well under $4,000 with good suspension and the like, starting around $1999 before any specials added on! With the electric motor and batteries it could go if on a base phat trike UT carries could go from the $1999 to the $4000 or possibly up to $7000 depending on the type of motor and the battery package one might want, but I think the $7000 range would include some upgrades!

That is the cost of people buying foreign products and dependency on foreign sources. It is the result of USA debt as well. If more people spent time mining, creating and enveloping their own products like batteries, rims, motors, frames, break pads, disc's for breaks ect... and didn't sell out due to bigger company pressure. Then ebikes would be way cheaper. People rather complain and do nothing to improve prices. Who do you know that makes electric motors other than Bafang? If you have 20 workers building bikes and each of them own houses and have children to feed and raise. What do you think their cost of living would have to be per year to live somewhat comfortably? 50k per year? 70k per year? How many bikes would you have to sell at 2k just to support those 20 people that work for your biking business? What do you do when business is slow and bikes don't sell? How much do you pay for machinery, metal, and other parts? How much to pay for electricity to keep building warm during winter and cool during summer and for all the lights and electricity needed for tools? To support 20 people at 70k a year only not including possible benefits this employees may have. Your company would have to sell enough bikes to make up 1,400,000 a year and 1,000,000 a year for 50k. That is just employee payments alone. You still have bike parts, frame fabrication tools, the cost of metal for frames, electric, and we haven't even touched taxes yet for small businesses. In my opinion it would be wise for people to start their own companies and not sell out to bigger companies in order to drop prices. It would also be in the best interest of complainers to reverse some business laws and standards. The initial expense for starting your own company can be a killer thanks to ridiculous laws.

In fact the Honda is only worth around 8k as soon as you register it and take delivery. Plus you have to licence, insure & put gas in it, which all cost's $$$. You don't need to do any of those for the ICE trike & it doesn't pollute either.

one thing you have to understand in the pricing, is the number of product made. It's easier to cut in half the cost of 100 000 product vs 20 000. Plus here it's a assembly of different manufacturer gear when in a car, it's all in house so you can cut the price that way too. Low production unit will always cost more than high production unit. More the market will develop more the price will drop. If you look a Ebike, you have a range that was similar no long ago, now that it's more developed, the product are more efficient, the manufacturer make more of the same model and the cost was going down each year (with the covid, the cost of fab rised up and so the end product will not go down for a moment). Here compared to an Ebike, you have more raw material, added structural part, a third set of wheel and a siege. Don't get me wrong it's expensive and don't help spread this type of product but it's a young market. When big bike company name like giant will enter into the dance (if they do one day), the price will drop a little because of the concurrence and mass production. (look at camera tech, some lenses cost more than those trikes)
