We are investigating the IAR-93 Vultur and J-22 Orao, the defiance of two communist European countries against the mighty Soviet aviation industry. #orao #fighterjet #aviation #serbianairforce
Why did Romania and Yugoslavia jointly develop a combat aircraft?
Why did the U.S.S.R. not intervene in such a defiance?
What are the variants of the IAR-93 and J-22?
Will the Serbian modernization programme give the Orao a second life?

J-22 Orao(Eagle) is a very interesting plane, specific. It was designed by General Professor Renduluć, a man who had given up flying since childhood, a man who grew up in the essence of aviation. He inherited the knowledge of the long tradition of aircraft production in Yugoslavia (Serbia) and upgraded this knowledge with experiences from abroad, primarily France and America. The knowledge he adopted and applied to the J-22 Orao and J-21 Soko (Falcon) was passed on to his students, one of whom is the publisher General General Professor Sava Pustinjje Professor Sava Pustinja in Sarajevo who built and constructed the G-4 Galeb ( Seagull), which was better in a number of parameters than its main competitor L-39 Albatros The G-4 is the safest trainer fighter in the world even today. It had the specific characteristic of forgiving the pilots' mistakes. It is designed so that any life-threatening mistake made by the pilot, it is enough to release the command and the plane returns to the moral position for flight by itself, that is, the plane returns to a safe horizontal position by itself. By the way, that plane has been tested to withstand 8 spins without losing complete control, that is, the maximum number of spins it can withstand has not been determined for safety reasons. It is assumed that he can handle more than 9. An American test pilot (woman) visited Yugoslavia and completed a test flight on the G-4 Galeb and on that occasion successfully flew 7 covites, for security reasons the number is not greater. After the flight, he stated that he thought the plane could certainly handle more than 9 revs because at No. 7 it behaved like most airplanes at No. 3 or 4. The later knowledge gathered on the J-21, J-22 and G-4 was applied to the development of the aircraft under the working name "NA", otherwise in cooperation with France, which was then developing the Rafale, and that "NA" was supposed to be a cheaper single-engine version of the Rafale. But it was intended to be more modern than the Rafale because it would have had a sight on the helmet even then (at that time it was supposed to be the only plane with that exotic possibility). The time of those ideas in Yugoslavia was 1988-1991. And the direct predecessor and culprit for such a fantastic development of events is precisely J-22 and Professor Rendulić. ☦🇷🇸 Then the war started!!!!!!

@@Truth-Istina - making an inferior crappy COPY of a foreign product, and painting that in national colors, is NOT innovation. And by no means "advancing the aviation traditions". In Europe, only few countries have a REAL aviation industry, with tradition: the russians, the french, the brits, and the italian. All other countries are just bottom feeders "eating" what these 4 give them. The germans also have an industry, but they lost that at the end of ww2, together with their balls, when they become an occupied country, a colony of the US. The REAL proof of a REAL aviation industry is when a country is able to produce 100% national aircraft, with ALL components made local - especially THE ENGINES, the heart of any aircraft. US is one of these countries. Russia, obvious, is another. France and UK are other. Only these countries are able to produce their 100% NATIONAL jet engines. No licenses involved.

Only reason why this plane wasnt on par with anything else is having low thrust engines. That limited speed and payload and left it in low tier CAS role. Also in that Bosnia incident where F16 show down 4 J-21/G-2s, 2 planes that got away were J-22s. In 99 they managed to fly combat missions and not get intercepted by NATO in the air.

Yugoslavia planned to make a fighter jet. It was known as "Project NA" (Novi Avion = New airplane). It was supposed to be equipped with French engines and most of avionics. It looked like smaller, single engine Rafale. There were some air tunnel tests with models of this airplane. However, wars and Yugoslavia falling apart stopped this from happening.

Actually Yugoslavia had developed fully functional pilot canopy with HOTAS, fly-by-wire system and voice control in that time. Every sub-system was developed except for the engines, which was to be Snecma M-88 French engine, and because Yugoslavia had the largest Air wind tunnel in south east Europe all aerodynamics testing on models were conducted. That plane needed only two years to conduct its maiden flight, but because of a country breakup that never happened. Serbia had shown interest for reviving this project, but due to poor finance that (still) didn't happened, but all the blueprints are still here.

Very interesting. I admire smaller countries going their own way. The engines are always the sticking point. Whether preWW2 or Cold War they always seem to have to haggle for western jet engines. Or knock off Russian ones. But still, theres so much in house work to do. Its pretty clear these days however that the West is surging ahead on engine developement. The onsane amountbof thrust today, supercruise, fuel efficiency happening is staggering. And China and Russia aren't matching that. As yet at least.

@serbdriver_au9126 All the reports I read say the Chinese are transitioning from Russian engine designs to their own but that the Chinese are behind schedule on building and swapping them in. That their engines have lower thrust to weight ratios. Also that their longevity is an issue, their metallurgy is behind. Russian jets are fast, everyone gives them that but both Chinese and Russian 'stealth' isn't comparable to the F22 or F35. And the Chinese are reliant for now on Russian RAM coatings. The U.S. has adaptive cycle engines in development, the B52's are getting upgraded with really powerful Rolls Royce engines and there's really interesting work going on with civilian jet engines in the West. The Chinese are now building new airliners but they say their 10 years behind companies like Airbus and Boeing. It's interesting that the U.S. with the F35 built a fighter not as fast as older jets or Russian frontbline fighters. The belief is that stealth matters more. It'll be interesting to see what the next Gen fighter can do.

Maybe a less interesting fact, but : in the late 1990s Indonesia had interest on purchasing Soko J-22 Orao. It was intended for the chaser plane purpose for indigenous project of IPTN N-250 turboprop passenger-aircraft. It was tested in Batajnica airfield, but then deemed unsuitable for being too fast for this assignment. Excellent video, extremely good analysis, bravo! As far as the plane itself is concerned the J-22 is certainly the best analysis that can be found! But several corrections on this topic, the J-22 as well as the Romanian version of the IAR-93, were rivals to the Soviet aircraft as much as to the Western ones. So they were not at all! Nor could they threaten Soviet or Western aircraft in a military or sales sense?! So it's nonsense. J-22 and IAR-93 were never even sold to anyone! Because first of all, these are small attack and reconnaissance planes that had the role of attacking targets on the ground, and for reconnaissance missions, they don't even have radars. These are not fighter-interceptors that could replace Soviet aircraft in the arsenals of Romania and Yugoslavia. Because neither Romania nor Yugoslavia were able to produce serious airplanes. It's the kind of war machine that was produced in the west or in the east in Russia! Both Romania and Yugoslavia bought and used their own fighter planes of a higher category, fighter interceptors MIG-15, 21, 29... MIG-21 was used until last year in Serbia and Romania, while Croatia still uses them. Also, Serbia still uses the MIG-29 inherited from Yugoslavia, and later acquired a larger part of these planes additionally from Russia and Belarus... So, you can see and conclude from that yourself. The alleged "rebellion of Yugoslavia and Romania against the Soviets"?! It's funny! It would have been successful if Romania and Yugoslavia could produce aircraft that would be, at the level, or better than the MIG-21 or MIG-29! But that was not the case even close! From airplanes, helicopters, to all air defense and land army systems, and even rifles, uniforms to helmets, mines, bombs... Both Romania and Yugoslavia used 80-90% of Soviet military equipment. Or they produced some systems in their countries, but only under Soviet license. So he's talking about an alleged "rebellion against the Soviets"?! It's a funny story that has nothing to do with the truth! A few corrections about some of the historical facts that you mentioned in the video. First of all, the Partisans were the paramilitary army of the Soviet Union in Yugoslavia throughout WW2. And they maintained such a relationship until 1948. By the way, the Red Army liberated Serbia and most of Yugoslavia, which the partisans joined as a paramilitary force, when the Red Army entered from the direction of Bulgaria and Romania in 1944, over 450,000 Red Army soldiers! So they liberated Yugoslavia, not the partisans! By the way, in communist Yugoslavia after it was distanced from the USSR, a myth was created that "the partisans liberated Yugoslavia themselves"?! What is an internal lie! But obviously when you foreigners also fell for such stupidity and that kind of false propaganda. Then it really seems true, that phrase, that a lie repeated a thousand times "becomes the truth" Unfortunately. The partisans only joined as a paramilitary of the USSR and the Red Army when they entered Yugoslavia. By the way, even decades before WW2 and throughout WW2, the Communist Party of Yugoslavia was under the command of the USSR, first in a political sense, later in a military sense. The Red Army, when it entered Yugoslavia, enthroned Tito in power in Yugoslavia in 1944. If there was no Red Army, there would be no Tito, nor would Yugoslavia be communist, these are obvious facts. By the way, Tito and the KPJ, the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, were still a decade before WW2 until the war itself, they were just operating and training in Moscow and the USSR, to be the paramilitary USSR in Yugoslavia, right as a socialist later, the Communist Party, and then if there was a war and as an army, which is what happened, in order to carry out the communist revolution. By the way, when Tito, after his power was sweetened, and he wanted to be a great dictator and satrap himself, he did not want to share it with anyone, so the resolution of Informbiro followed in 1948, who in the then Yugoslavia declared that he was in favor of Stalin. was liquidated or taken to a "bare island", most of them were in the partisans during the war. In translation, this is what the Soviets also had, called the Gulag, only worse than that. Practically, Yugoslavia was a trojan horse for NATO, in that situation, that Tito feigned "neutrality", and from the beginning of the 50s, for this reason, Yugoslavia was financed with loans practically exclusively by the US, until its disintegration. It is also incorrect to inform you that the Soviets were satisfied because Yugoslavia is not in NATO, and that in the alleged WW 3 it would not be on NATO's side?! Yugoslavia had long been under the financial control of the US and thus NATO, if WW3 had happened, Tito's Yugoslavia would certainly have been on NATO's side. I would also emphasize that the Army of the Republic of Srpska (the army of local Serbs from Bosnia, that is, the Republic of Srpska) had the J-22, as you mentioned, and successfully used it in the war. And now they have them in the warehouse, but they are not operational. While the army of the Republika Srpska Krajina (a small army of local Serbs, today it is Croatia) did not have jet aviation in its inverter, so the team itself, of course, did not have the J-22 either.

We tried to become independent from Russia in terms of energy and industry. Why do you think that we built cars and trucks not with Russian technology, or the nuclear power plant we have was not built with Russian technology, instead we have Canadian technology. Our cars had French technology, the trucks with German technology. The Romanian oil industry was more developed than the Russian one. Many machines in the factories were German or Japanese. The Russians knew this, that's why they didn't sell us the last tanks they had or planes. After mig 21, Romania stopped buying Russian planes. And you were always afraid that you might be treated like Czechoslovakia. Moreover, the NATO countries were also afraid of this. Taking advantage of the friendship with the USSR, you could build your own military aircraft, because the Russian Ivan, dressed in military uniform, pledged to defend your country from NATO aggression.

Tbh with Ukraine jets wearing out due to the intensity of missions, with rough landing capabilities, would be a good substitute for its SU-25 Frogfoot. It wouldn't mean an operational breakthrough or anything, but it could help give more availability to the Ukrainian airforce especially since those are already retired in every country they literally don't represent any cost other than training and basic pre-delivery maintenance.

Huge blunder on political analysis. In Potsdam conference victorious Allies have divided influence on Yugoslavia as 50/50. That allowed Tito to play both sides.

It's not wrong though. Yugoslavia refused to join the Warsaw Pact. Especially after Soviet invaded Hungary 1956 & then Czechoslovakia in 1968. So in return KGB tried to assassinate Josip Broz Tito several times but always failed. Similar effect happened in Romania where Ceaucescu publicly denounced Soviet & Albania under Hoxha left the Warsaw Pact for partnership with China, then left it too, which ultimately isolated Albania from the rest of the world.

Partisan couldn't do shit in Yugoslavia, "they" started liberating land when Soviets came from the east. That's the only reason why they were winers in Yugoslavia. Up until '44, royalists or better known Chetniks did the most of fighting against occupational forces and local collaboration forces. But communists won with help of Soviets and they then started writing false history which is thought in schools to this day.

You're obviously not knowledgeable enough, it's a great plane, with some flaws, but still usable today. Don't forget that it was built 45-50 years ago. ☦🇷🇸 Then the war started!!!
