IAM The Roadcraft System Part 1

For associates preparing for their UK/Ireland IAM test. Also suitable for ROSPA/ROADAR. This video is in three parts and is me driving and showing you the system of car control. I am not a driving instructor and it remains your responsibility to drive safely and legally. Feedback welcome! Thanks.

A good series of video`s and I am in no doubt that they contributed in no small measure to my passing of the Advanced Driving Test today. Well done.

I have my driving test next week (My actual one to get rid of my provisional and not an "advanced" one - I'm 17) and would just like to say that your videos have helped me out loads. Especially as I am prone to slightly panicking when things suddenly change (hopefully this will get better with time), and the system (which I've just started using) has helped me counter this. Thanks, these have been invaluable!!! Greg

@Borbuster the idea is a simple system of car control which allows for control and safety at all times, Unceccessary gear changes can get in the way of this. The idea is that you select the position and speed appropriate, decelerate to the speed you want and just prior to decelerating select the gear now appropriate. During this you are braking so the idea of suddenly accelerating suggests that you haven't taken in all the information and didn't see the hazard

Good to hear the point of only signaling if there's other road users or pedestrians to signal to. Interesting video.

The classic thing to do given the nature of this video, is to critisize anything and everything you can possibly think of. It's classic KZread psychology. I on the other hand think this is a near perfect example of how roadcraft works. Even though i passed my ADT with RoADA, Your rival group. And at 21 i passed with a gold grade, making me officially the youngest high graded advanced driver in England, i'm now training to be an executive chauffer. Excellent video, thanks for posting.

You're completely right. I do talk about the philosophy behind the System further in, and at the end (in part 3) I talk about the importance of a dynamic driving plan.

I think the main obstacles around built up areas are bicycles & buses which cause you to need to change lane or position in the road and if you specifically watch out for them well ahead on your side as well as the other side of the road you can plan well ahead of getting to them and find driving far less stressful!

A fantastic series of videos (watched 'em all now), which had enlightened me even more as an associate, especially as I'm practising commentary for my next observed drive. Please, keep them coming (though I can't think what you'd need to cover next!)

I'm was finding commentary 'overwhelming' (not ready to confront my Observer, yet); but watching your videos has helped me realise the things that should be prioritised, and some better/easier terminology for certain phrases; I tended to get stuck on 'what' to say, almost resorting to 'ugs' & 'erms' ;-) I hope you like the RX-8 -- it's certainly the best & most rewarding car I've ever driven, and family practical too :D The IAM is making that even more so!

You're right - no steering wheel in these - camera did not have a wide enough field of view. Hmm - not sure what video to do next - I was going to do one on how to build up commentary.

@Paintheshed I am sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience with the IAM. It very much depends on a combination of the associate, observer, and group, and some outcomes are better than others. For me, it was the best thing I ever did.

@Paintheshed - Without watching the whole video again, I don't remember the other car. It is indeed possible I made a mistake. What time index was it?

It's a reasonable question. You might look at this video and think "I drive like that". If you were to take the course, then an experienced advanced driver would be sitting in your passenger seat looking at your driving and giving you feedback. Both the IAM and Rospa, as far as I know, offer "try before you buy" so you could, if you were genuinely interested, try it without committing to doing the full course.

I did think 'motorways / dual carriageways' after I'd posted the other comment :) Bend assessment would be good too, just to keep me in check ;-)

Oh, I also test drove an RX-8 today. Good fun, but I'm not sure yet.

@jimstuart I was not double declutching, which is what you are referring to, in these videos. I do use that technique these days (these videos are two years old) for downchanges, sometimes. Rev matching simply refers to attempting to set the engine revs to the correct speed for the new gear, with a single or double clutch change. Most people, in my experience, don't even do this. I hope your "lazy and skill-less" does not refer to me.

Thanks. I'd heard about the routine for the L test before - I don't know if it came from the Roadcraft System or vice-versa. Have you done IAM or ROADAR? Might be worth checking out - IAM also operate a recommended driving instructor scheme.

@jimstuart So you'd change down sequentially? Without resorting to quoting dogmatic sources, that's generally seen as outdated, but if it continues to work for you, then good for you.

Next was either going to be bend assessment/cornering or dual carriageway/motorways. I'd prefer to do bend assessment, but both are interesting. How are you finding commentary? There are a couple of good DVDs you can buy. The Roadcraft DVD, Chris Gilbert's Ultimate Driving Craft and Mark Kendrick's Driving Mastery Series volume 2 commentary are all good. The main thing, however, is practice. Best of luck
