The i7 860 is now capable of this performance is also very surprising
The CPU evolution is nothing close to being impressive in the last decade if you compare it with the GPU segment, in fact it's underwhelming. The difference in the speed between a 860 (from 2009) and 13700K is like 200 to 300% at most while the difference between a GTX 285 (from 2009) and a 4090 is like 5000%...

I've seen more of your videos. Just a suggestion: you could spend a little bit more time on the settings screens. Even 1-2 seconds would help, for the watcher to be able to pause the video at the right moment or to take a quick look at the settings. This wouldn't make your videos substantially longer and would be more useful than to see an extra second of gameplay footage.
I get that the CPU limits which RAM you can use... But it seems to me that the RAM is also playing a big role on the low fps. 16 vs 32 GB 1600 vs 6000 MHz. To make things worse, the 16 GB are saturated in some games. Regardless, love these videos. 👍🏽👍🏽

I figured the 13700k would've gotten a way higher framerate in a few of these games. Quite surprising.
I had the i7 870. It started acting weird and when i took the fan off it had a crack in it. Had it up until last year and i still used it hooked up to my tv and played stuff like fifa and Forza horizon 3 on it.
That 860 is fighting for its life, tough little CPU.
There are some things that interest me a lot from looking at these stats. Firstly, the fact that the CPU even launches the games that I thought would have some requirements regarding different HW acceleration standards that have been introduced over the years. Second, the behavior that in most games the GPU limits its clock speeds automatically because, well its "awareness" to match the GPU clock speeds with what the CPU is able to keep up with. Third, I saw more than a couple of times that the 0.01% fps actually being higher on the 860. Is this part of the debate of the 12- and 13 series CPUs having a scheduler moved off die to save space but ultimately leaving the CPUs with something that feels more sluggish? Having to wait for a short period of time for the scheduler to respond and tell CPU (in lay mans terms) "where to start" or expect to start with a certain type of instructions. I've seen a couple of videos discussion about these generations of Intel CPUs just "feeling sluggish" around normal Windows operation but when it ultimately gets going it is still as fast as the benchmarks show. Interestingly, one video I saw about this they said that this i7 860 (Lynnfield) would've basically have had the same issue since it wasn't until Sandy Bridge (2600K etc) that Intel moved that scheduler on-die anyway and that is why that CPU family has a legendary legacy because it was so snappy when it was released, and can still be to this day compared to Lynnfield and before.
I imagine IPC uplift is the main difference maker but at the same time that pci-e gen2 is 100% gonna kneecap any modern gpu to the same fps limit
@kleingib213

generational differences are overstated, even high end GPUs dont make much use of the high bandwidth that is offered on pcie, the performance loss is about 7% when using a 4090 on pcie 2.0 so the burden of performance is all on the CPU in this case (in other words, say even if the i7-860 supports pcie 4.0, this benchmark would yield pretty much the same results)

what's amazing is look at Hogwarts. 45% usage!! that means you could slap a strong cpu on here and it would get more fps. that is wild that a 13900k cant push all the head room a 4090 had at a lower res in all scenarios. you could easily 1080p a 4090 for 10 years, or more.
Tbh surprised how well it runs on such an old cpu. It's same performance lvl as old gen consoles.
It's a little unrealistic but that was not the point. I parked my Ryzen for much needed upgrades and I have an I7 860 whose motherboard popped to caps. Today I ordered my motherboard. It's just a work PC for web dev etc. With mild gaming in mind as I sometimes work 14-15h a day. She's going to run with an RX470. Nothing to big. This is actually a realistic combo. I ran my Ryzen 5 2600 with an GTX1070ti and I had about no bottleneck ( there will always be a little bottleneck but mine had like 2% bottleneck ) I would love to see this on higher res as well so you are more GPU bound.. I am not expecting much but it would be interesting I play games like Diablo and torchlight and do some game dev when I find the time.
The point is that Both run the games

The game has pretty bad optimizations on the pc, it's cpu bound even on the newest cpu's. I was getting a bit of a stutter in certain areas of the game when I was playing it. As for games released this year the dead space remake game runs a hell of a lot better than hogwarts legacy does.
I think maybe pairing with an AMD GPU might be somewhat beneficial because of the lighter driver overhead
The trick here is to look at the 1% and .1% lows, not the average framerate. Also, this benchmarks is not showing games that need AVX to run. If you're looking to build a budget PC with an old i7, then go with a 2nd Gen i7 at the minimum because these support AVX instructions.
There's still room left in the old i7 860, had mine clocked to 4.2 ghz (bclk oc) with 2400mhz ddr3 cl10. Not that 30% improvement would be much better in todays games anyway. But I did finish TW3 on 1080p ultra with 980ti constantly above 60fps.
HOW ABOUT IN 1440P AND 2160P ?
Meanwhile you've got people in PC build a group singing with the CPU literally doesn't matter at all. You only looking at a 350% increase across the most titles in just thirteen years. That's a 26% increase average over the course of each year. 😂

Why puting all gpu intensive settings to ultra? You are not comparing the CPU here... You are just showing that the 4090 can be limited by 15 years old cpu. There is a reason all cpu comparison are done in 720p low graphics... The 13700k is half idle on all those bechmarks and cant show how many frame it could really get out. Put everything on low except cpu intensive settings like draw distance... And you will see that the divide is waaaaay more than x3,5
Not quite correct testing. Many games lack not the old i7, but RAM, which in the assembly with the old i7 is only 12 GB (plus the low speed of the memory plays a role)
