I Worked at an Ayahuasca Retreat: What I WISH Someone Told Me...

Plant Medicine Intention & Integration Guided Journal: www.etsy.com/listing/16549691...
Learn what ayahuasca is, who could benefit from it (and who might not), and my top realizations and insights that will support you before, during, and after your plant medicine ceremonies. You may want to listen on .75 speed as an editing mishap sped this video up a bit!
As someone who worked at an ayahuasca retreat center and witnessed hundreds of people sit with ayahuasca, I want to really open up with you about what I learned, and some information that isn’t always talked about.
Most people arrive at an ayahuasca retreat with expectations or preconceived notions of what they’re going to experience. But this is an incredibly powerful plant medicine, and it is crucial to acknowledge that each ceremony is unique.
My intention is that this video will provide you with a deeper understanding of ayahuasca and how you can receive lasting transformation working with this powerful plant medicine.
Let me know if you have more questions about ayahuasca (or anything else)!

What a wonderful description and guide. I wasn't conscious of what you pointed out - that aya starts working as soon as you commit. But so many people I met on my way there, on seeing me remarked that they felt strongly that they saw "something important happening," "something big coming up." So, wise words in this clip - thank you

One thing that my ayahuasca experience taught me is to totally let go of any expectations. I had watched so many youtube videos of other people's experiences that I expected mine to be the same, but I'm one of those people who did not have a visual experience but a more sensory/emotional one and it was nothing like anything I heard from other people's experiences (but, it was magical and transformative nonetheless). I'm going to another ceremony this weekend (3 years later) and I have no expectations whatsoever, I'm just nervous and excited at the same time. Thanks for the tips, they were a great reminder!

I did five ceremonies in the Andes nearly ten years ago. You are spot on One thing that you mentioned and I would not have understood until I experienced it is that as soon as you commit to the ceremonies ayahuasca goes to work with you. I started receiving feelings and dreams about things such as who I would meet in Peru They were accurate. This is supernatural and anyone that does not treat it with respect will learn respect. It may not be an enjoyable lesson!!! But it is for your own good!!

You give great advice for anyone who is considering ayahuasca for the first time. I read a lot of scientific research abstracts, some books and articles from personal and shamanic points of view, and watched quite a few personal-experience videos before I took it, but none of them addressed what you discuss here, all of which applied or apply to me: -The first time I took ayahuasca, I had a massive panic attack followed by some unintelligibly odd (sleeping) dreams, but had no visions and no real conscious or concrete experiences similar to those I'd heard about. I did feel like something was wrong with me, or else that I probably had done something wrong. -It wasn't until my fifth ayahuasca experience that I had opened-eyed visuals, and that *terrified* me. I had become accustomed to the types of experiences that I typically had and so I had been lulled into expectations that were not realistic. Ironically, I think had I had those visions when I first took it, I may have been less alarmed because that's what I expected to happen the first time. -For me, purging always has kicked off the process, but the purging never involved vomiting. Everyone I've discussed ayahuasca with focuses heavily on the vomiting aspect, and I always explain that 1) I've never had that; 2) I've had sudden, explosive diarrhea instead, but it comes and goes quickly, and as physically uncomfortable as it can be, the rest of the ayahuasca experience is so profound and prolonged that I really never even think of that aspect of purging. I have, however, also purged physically through tears, a runny nose, and extreme hot and cold flashes (and of course psychologically and emotionally in various ways), and I wish that people who talk about ayahuasca purging would be more holistic/comprehensive about this. Your whole body and psyche is put through the ringer in the interest of your whole body-mind-and-spirit's health. -Most of my experiences have manifested with similar phases (nauseousness, physical purging, a feeling of my body being 'inspected' physically by some kind of sentient entity, a visionary experience of some kind, experience of the warm white light, a telepathic Q&A period, revisiting past traumas and sometimes out-of-body 'shapeshifting,' and being brought gently back to this version of reality), but all have been different enough from one another, too, that it really is unwise to have expectations about what might occur. Something *always* surprised me in ways that required quite a lot of time to process afterward. And everything I've read and heard from others leads me to think that everyone who takes ayahuasca is bound to see giant fluorescent snakes and jaguars, and I've never seen experienced those specific entities. I love your advice about focusing on witnessing and not explaining or labeling, as well. I found for myself one time, the fifth and last time I took ayahuasca, that it's most challenging not to reactively freak out and begin to devise terrified 'what if' scenarios at times, and as soon as you do that, things can go very downhill very quickly. I've never quite related to the notion of religious faiths as are commonly practiced in the U.S., but in this case, I think a person really has to have strong faith that the ayahuasca's spirit or intention or however one wants to think about it is acting in the best interest of the person who takes the ayahuasca. To cast doubt is to invite a paradigm-shattering challenge from the curative aspects of it, and those are perhaps among the most important lessons but also always are the hardest-won lessons. You really find out how open or closed minded you are when you experience ayahuasca. But you always end up more open minded afterward, regardless of how rough the road was to get there.

What an awesome comment 😆 Thank you so much. Your experience has been fascinating, and it's a perfect example of why it's so important to not have expectations or portray ayahuasca as working in any "specific" way. I saw so many people pass through where I worked and there were so many different ways that people interacted with the medicine. Purging in different ways, having or not having visuals, interacting with entities, etc. But like you said, a lot of the videos out there with personal experiences seem to be quite similar. And yes, you definitely have to trust and have faith!

Wow, I really wish I had seen this video before my recent journey. I did go to an retreat. It is exactly as you described. My journey was like no other and I definitely struggled with feeling blocked and with connecting to the medicine. In the end, my intention for going there, even though I never realized that it was that came to fruition. the Medicine knew exactly what I needed. I did not have the same experiences as most people, and truly did feel like I was missing some thing. In the big picture, I was given so many gifts. It’s been a month and I’m still receiving gifts, seeing the messages that help me stay connected. More than anything I feel true happiness and joy, something I have never felt before, but never knew that. I continue on this journey with breathwork, yoga, and some meditation., Journaling and a gratitude journal. I worry that this feeling and trajectory will change, but also making a very conscientious effort to not go back into old patterns. I do see myself going back to the resort, in perhaps nine months to a year, if I feel so inclined to, to find more of the connection, find a better understanding of purpose, and continue to heal trauma. I do have a question after my long soliloquy, sorry. I had marked difficulty with connecting with the Medicine. It was not until the third ceremony and the help of a kind shaman to clear some blockages that allowed me to connect with the medicine. I worry that I will have the same issue should I return. How do I open myself up to receive, not just from the medicine, but currently from the universe? How do I let go? Thank you again for doing such a wonderful video. I have shared this with everybody that has been interested in my journey and considering trying the same. I appreciate you.

Hi Anya! Wow thank you for your beautiful comment and for sharing some of your story! It's definitely true that the medicine knows what we need, although that can be difficult at times 😂 Something I've noticed with the medicine is that she'll often provide experiences that make us feel something that we need to look at in our everyday life. For example, you mentioned that you felt like you were missing something and you didn't have the same experience as other people. It could be helpful to look at that and examine how that feeling comes up for you in other situations in life. The truth is, we all have our own unique experience but one isn't ever better or worse than another, and at the end of the day we aren't ever missing out on anything 😉 The trajectory will DEFINITELY change in some way or form, and that's absolutely ok! In terms of your question, I think I need to make a video about letting go lol! I've gotten that question a few times. The good thing is that now that you've cleared through some blockages you're likely more open to the medicine moving forward. But you're already doing some amazing things related to integration that will help you! Meditation, breathwork, journaling. Spending time in nature is amazing too. Opening to receive ...I think the first step to that is acknowledging that you are 100% worthy and deserving of everything you desire. And also just feeling gratitude for what you already have in life, which will continue to invite in more. A book to check out if you're interested, would be "Letting Go - A Pathway to Surrender" by David Hawkins Thank you again for your kind comments on this video ☺️🙏🏻✨

Hey Danielle, Just wanted to say thank you so much for your previous guidance and advice. I did get the book that you recommended. Oh my goodness, I have never connected with a book so well. It makes perfect sense to me. I don’t know if it’s partially because , I had no understanding or insight previous to my journey with the medicine, but it certainly makes sense. Still trying to figure out how exactly the letting go occurs. But I’m sure after a few reads, it will make much more sense. I think the universe and great spirit for leading me to your video and you. It was all meant to happen exactly as it is happening. Thank you so so much.

Anya! Hi beautiful. It makes me so happy to hear from you again ☺ That is SO fricking cool to hear that you connected with the book! And like you said, it takes time to integrate. But don't worry too much about the 'how'. It will happen in time simply because you have the right intention. Actually, I just released a video about surrendering with the medicine, and a guided meditation as well (for before a ceremony, if you end up doing more). Hopefully those can also support you. Let me know if you have any more questions. Sending you a big hug and lots of love on your journey ❤❤

What a fantastic Video. You're a beautiful soul and such a great communicator! Thank you so much for this absolutely priceless information. Truly one of the most informative videos I came accros. I have received a calling and I've been binge watching Videos about Ayahuasca since Saturday. I've always been spiritual and highly intuitive. I only found out my mother is an alcoholic and what co-dependency is 10 years ago and only recently realized or could name I'm the family scapegoat. The past year has been difficult, the grief has been horrendous. I have been doing inner child work and trauma related work which has enabled me to understand the effects of family dysfunction and CPTSD. I know my spiritual guides are guiding me in this journey of self awareness, self knowledge and healing as I feel their presence and wake up remembering the guidance they've given me in my dreams. I need help releasing all the pain, grief and all the energy I have accumulated in being in such a demoniac position. Scapegoating is one the worst forms of psycho emotional abuse. I can't wait for my Ayahuasca journey.

It's interesting how sometimes those with the deepest experiences of trauma and grief end up most connected to themselves and their spiritual journey. Interesting enough, and I’m telling you this because I know you will not only understand me but I know you will believe me. Yesterday morning, I woke early feeling a little bit worried and disheartened. I went to bed and had a vivid dream of being in a ceremony. I don’t remember drinking anything but just being in a place surrounded by people dressed differently like they do in South American tribes. Thank you so much for sharing your ayahuasca journey with us. I wish I watched this recording before my journey! I had it four, times and yes... I (my conscious mind)said to myself I did not have any expectations... then, as you can predict, yes, I had! but because my mind referred to the past experiences with the plant medicine, my last journey sort of disappointed me until I realised (this is something I now really appreciate from the medicine) that actually I received the answers I wanted to ask in the ceremony. It is almost always to me that my intension and questions are all heard and I am shown all the profound reflection / answers to them. When that gentle whispers of ayahuasca sink into my heart, I get so touched and teary. Ayahuasca ceremony is not all about mystical visions and vomiting. It is a very gentle but so powerful realisation that take a hold over time after the ceremony just like you said and that is why I revisit to see my higher self. It is just like attitude we need to have to live life. It is all there for me but we don't see. Gracias

I more or less accidentally got on to the subject... and very interested in it after viewing a video by Jordan B Peterson called: "The Psychology of Psychedelics" in 2021. I had avoided the video for a while. Expected some kind of story with a nasty touch of irony.... But was totally surprised as to how important this topic was. I also have purchased a few books by Graham Hancock and read books by Dennis McKenna and Brian C. Muraresku. Very interesting books all. But videos about getting high is not what I'm looking for. A monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) is a type of medication that works by blocking the action of the enzyme monoamine oxidase. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, in the brain. By inhibiting the activity of monoamine oxidase, MAOIs increase the levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain, which can help alleviate symptoms of certain mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety. MAOIs are typically prescribed when other antidepressant medications have not been effective. It is important to note that MAOIs can have potentially serious interactions.

Hi, Danielle. I have lived for over three years with a family of indigenous yachakkuna (shamans) in the Andes who facilitate safe ayahuasca ceremonies. I live with them mostly to learn the Kichwa Otavalo language and culture, and I personally have no interest in doing plant medicine ceremonies. However, I have spent enough time with these yachakkuna to know they are kind people of high integrity filled with authentic ancestral wisdom. Their ceremonial songs are so beautiful!

I would recommend going through the easier plants before reaching your hands to ayahuasca. For example, start with cannabis, if you have ptsd you will feel paranoid and start thinking of yourself in a different point of perspective maybe even worse but it’s part of the healing where you separate your self from your emotion and realize that you aren’t your thought nor emotions. Meditation even help with that point of view but plant are here to help us get there faster and in a straight forward process. I found psilocybin helped me with understanding that we are a collective of spirit, soul or matter if you want to call it that. Psilocybin made me pass through looking at my self from an inner vision to being conscious of what is valuable of my surroundings. I have been dealing with long term depression that I didn’t know when it started how how to end it cuz I have never seen the other side. I was programmed to be looking at everything that way. And I think these plant are here to prove that you are not limited to your current perspective. I can’t wait for my ayahuasca retreat so I can complete the pieces of the puzzle and become a whole with what I am and where I am. Thank you for the video🙏🏻❤️

YES I love this perspective so much. It can definitely help to work with some other plant medicines before ayahuasca. Although I did see some people come to the retreat and jump straight into aya, many had worked with other medicines like psilocybin or cannabis. And I love what you said about the plants showing us that we are not limited to our current perspective. So true. Thank you so much for watching ❤ and good luck with your ayahuasca retreat!

Thanks for the video Danielle. Ayahuasca has resonated with me as a person who has suffered from anxiety in the past. This anxiety passed but after using way too much xtc the anxiety has returned in a combination with some depersonalization. Almost a year now and it feels like my soul wants me to deal with certain stuff from the past but am lowkey scared to try this because xtc has caused these symptoms to come to the surface in this way. Im trying other trauma therapies soon but ayahuasca is def one of the other options im considering. Matt

Hey Matt! Thank you so much for sharing part of your story ❤ I can completely resonate. I've been there when it comes to depersonalization and anxiety as well. It's such a strange balance when it comes to depersonalization and spirituality at times...it can almost enhance it so we have to be super careful with some of these practices and plant medicines. Are there any daily practices you use? Breathwork, meditation, yoga, etc.?

Coming period I’m really going to try trauma therapy, EMDR first and then maybe others aswell. In my opinions these symptoms stem from traumas that havent been processed correctly/fully. xtc has only opened these wounds. Ofc im not sure its just my theory. Ayahuasca is no joke so am trying to try other things as my anxiety and dpr is still managable and I have been able to function just struggling and frustrated sometimes.

Thank you this has been really helpful. I have been very interested in having this experience for about a year or so now. I have found many different natural and alternative healing methods so much more helpful when used for my mental and physical healing I seem to be more responsive and in tune with alternatives to western medicine. Being a nurse I am more and more convinced that our body and mind have everything it needs to heal itself. I feel western medicine is doing a more damage to our wellbeing in the long run than it is beneficial. The problem I have is that it scares me, having had some pretty horrible experiences on hallucinogenics in the past lol. However it is all about the experience❤ if it’s meant to be it will be. This was very helpful thanks so very much ❤

It can be hard when it feels like the to do/not do is balanced...I feel you there! But if/when the time is right you will know. And it's totally ok to have fear around it! I've worked with aya many times and still experience fear of the unknown or what might come up. Aya will show you who you are and also support you in accepting and integrating that person, while letting go of anything that doesn't serve your highest self.

I watched this as a critical watchdog. But she covered all the important bases. Good job Danielle. I have two elaborations that emphasize aspects of what you went over. 1) If you are suicidal, and have no support structure at home, skip aya. Aya changed my life. A woman in my group committed suicide afterwords because she wasn’t able or willing to open and surrender. 2) ICAROS. If you are attending ceremony, if there are no icaros, whether being sung through the mouth of a person, or even a speaker, I recommend not attending. The icaros are the songs of the intelligence of nature, passed to the shamans. Ideally, only attend where a bonafide shaman is facilitating. If only medicine people, verify icaros are a part of the experience. They are the spirit science that have come through the mouths of antiquity.

Some of the Western people who share the medicine and hold space and keep the ceremony space energetically safe are also on a deep path of spiritual awakening. Most South American shamans I have met are mainly interested it helping to live their life and for healing. The awakening part hasn't been very strong. But it could also just be my specific experience.

Traditionally, in ceremony the Shaman is the only one who drinks la Medicina. That way the shaman has a higher sense of what is needed for the patient. The patient doesn't have to drink aya at all, nor do they have to taper off or stop medication if they simply dont take the drink but still surrender to the environment and the medicine songs.

He might have had soul loss. Find a good reputable Shaman or cuenendera or cuenendero. Soul loss is a real thing. My young friend who is Mexican American family from Mexico. She was in a BAD accident with her younger sister. A car ran a red light and hit the passenger side of car where her sister was. Her sister died they had a very hard time to revive her. They thought she might had brain injury from this. She was gone for 15 or so minutes. She came back was in hospital for an awhile. But when she healed she was not the same person at all!!! She was a different person completely! Her family is close. They were very worried. Her Mom found a cuenendero an older man . She saw him maybe 3 times and she came back and remembers all that happened to her . She said another soul came into her body when she left her body. She recovered. Her mom also took her other sisters to him when they were getting off track into drugs. It helped them. I am about ready to go. I think a lady who briefly worked for me I feel cursed me. Weird thing happened with this woman. She was into the Dark Arts. Not a nice person at all. I have had the worst things happen to me since this woman. I called her one night and left an anonymous message . I hung up phone and my arm was itching bad like a bite or something I lifted up my long sleeve jacket to find blistering 6” long scratches. I was freaked out. Never had that happened. This woman was so very dark. She thought she was a mystic in all way’s. She had a scary felon big boyfriend . It was bad! I am still have issues since 2012. I had great luck and life till this woman and all she did to me is another story. I have thought of going to this man and I think I will. I never do anything quick these days! It is Worth a try! Look into soul loss and how to retrieve one’s soil. Takes an experienced person to do this. Spirt world is hard to navigate for the novice. All things one needs training in. Especially this. Hope your brother finds some help. So very hard I know❤ vitamins and minerals might help if deficiency. Keep looking for things. Prayers❤

Sooo excited for you!! It's normal to feel nervous or afraid before a retreat. Best advice I can give is honestly just to trust and always come back to being the witness. If "negative" visions arise, we only feel fear because we create a story about it. If in that moment we can witness and just observe, it takes the fear away.

Hi! Thank you so much for watching. And yes, 100% I have dealt with the *super fun* process of struggling to let go in ceremony 😂 That is totally normal and part of being human. The ego has a hard time letting go because it's trying to protect us, and any change, unknown, or transformation can literally feel like a threat to its survival. It's such an individual process, but for me some of the things that have helped the most have been: breathwork (and simply focusing on my breath), practicing meditation in the time leading up to your ceremony (this is helpful for detaching from your thoughts and emotions and purely witnessing them), and also just sending love to whatever comes up rather than judging it. Even if it feels overwhelming I remind myself to send loving energy and that helps create less resistance. Having an intention or mantra you can come back to throughout the ceremony can also be really helpful (for example "surrender" or "trust the process"). Hope this helps 💛
